National Health Metrics: Disease Outbreak Comparison

Cross-country comparison dashboard: 3506 events across 236 nations with disease diversity, event ranking, and year coverage.

What This Dashboard Shows

Nation-level comparison of disease outbreak activity: total event count, number of distinct diseases, and years of first/last reporting. Use this as a reference dashboard when comparing countries side-by-side — it flattens 1996-onwards history into a single row per nation.

Countries with zero events are excluded from rankings below but appear on the Country Hub. Exclusion does not mean disease absence — it means no WHO DON publication on record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why compare by event count instead of case count?

The WHO Disease Outbreak News publishes one event per notification, not one per case. Event count is the right unit for cross-country comparison because it normalises across outbreak sizes.

What does "Disease diversity" mean?

The number of distinct diseases a country has reported. A country with 50 events spread across 30 diseases has higher surveillance diversity than one with 50 events for a single disease.

Are all 236 countries on record?

Yes, but only 236 have at least one reported event. The rest appear on the Country Hub with a zero count.
