Portugal played out the final minutes with 10 men after Francisco Conceicao was dismissed for two yellow cards in the space of a few seconds for dissent following his unsuccesful appeal for a penalty.

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker Ronaldo walked out on the squad on Wednesday, ahead of the previous game against Denmark, after Portugal’s all-time top goalscorer learned he would not start.

Portugal are now guaranteed to finish in the top two spots in the group, thus granting them passage to the last eight in March 2027.

Norway took the lead in Porto against the run of play with a stunning effort from Brentford defender Ajer after 36 minutes.

The Norwegian met a bouncing ball on the edge of the box perfectly and bent it into the top corner.

However, two minutes later, Barcelona defender Cancelo scored a similarly superb goal, rifling home from about 20 yards.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland fired across the face of goal after an hour and was replaced by Jorgen Strand Larsen a few minutes later.

Nations League holders and two-time record champions Portugal nosed in front when AC Milan striker Ramos, starting in place of Ronaldo, tucked home from close range after being teed up by Joao Felix.

Conceicao’s foolish dismissal left Jesus’s team in a tough spot for the final few minutes, but they held on to triumph for the fourth time in four games in the group. %!s()

The announcements on Monday are a signal that the party intends to refocus on the economy, an area where it has made relatively little progress in the polls.

Tory strategists believe there is a major opening to make gains against Reform and Labour, given the limited focus on growth from Andy Burnham and the chancellor, John Healey, at the Labour conference last week.

The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, published a new tract on Sunday called The Right Way, which she said would be the bedrock that underpinned the party’s policy development before the next election. Polls have the party still trailing third behind Labour and Reform UK.

Introducing the document – inspired by Margaret Thatcher’s The Right Approach from 1976 – Badenoch said the Conservatives still expected to win the next election and needed to “hit the ground running … We will need to be ready from day one, having already shown people what kind of government we are going to be.”

“Keir Starmer didn’t have a plan. That’s why he’s gone,” she said. “Andy Burnham doesn’t have one either and that is why I know the announcements he is making will all come to naught. We have to be different, different from Labour, and different from the party we were two years ago.”

In a slew of announcements at the Conservative party conference on Monday, the Tories will pledge measures that they claim would cut the price of a new home by £50,0000, including scrapping net zero regulations on housebuilding, such as the Future Homes Standard, which requires all new homes in England to be zero-carbon ready.

The party will promise to replace section 106 agreements and the community infrastructure levy that oblige developers to build a proportion of affordable housing and support school and health service demands locally. Instead, there will be a “one stop” levy on developers, Griffith will say.

The party has also pledged to abolish Natural England and the Environment Agency, “moving to a more streamlined regulatory landscape to protect our environment”.

Griffith will say in his first speech as shadow chancellor that the Tories would continue to back the expansion of Heathrow airport and leave the Aarhus convention, which makes it easier for community groups to oppose developments.

Conservative shadow Treasury ministers will be tasked with finding new ways of simplifying tax for individuals and businesses, Griffith will say, calling the tax code “a cat’s cradle of complexity”.

In his speech, he will say: “No one else is coming to save our economy. Only we can inject reality, tell the hard truths and make this a country we are proud to hand on to the next generation.

“Our task just got bigger. We face a prime minister that wants to return Britain to an imagined past. A socialist fever dream of the 1970s. Cheaper homes, lower taxes and less red tape. This will be the most ambitious deregulation project in a generation. We will be more prepared than ever before. We will set out our plans line by line. Every bill, every regulation, every chapter.”

Griffith will say that the government must speed up the building of a Heathrow third runway in whatever way it can. “I refuse to accept for a single moment that the country of Brunel and Bazalgette, of the vaccine taskforce and the Mulberry harbours, has to sit around waiting until the 2040s to get a third runway built,” he will say.

Burnham has recently expressed personal scepticism about the Heathrow third runway, saying he would take differing views seriously.

The new shadow housing secretary, Katie Lam, will say the scrapping of housing regulations and of enforcement bodies would mean “anti-growth ideologues can never again hold our country hostage”.

The party said Natural England and the Environment Agency were preventing too many homes being built and adding unnecessary costs to building. Both bodies would be scrapped, with their necessary functions brought directly into Defra. %!s()

Dodik is a staunchly pro-Russia politician who, despite not appearing on the ballot, has dominated the campaign and inflamed divisions with separatist rhetoric that has sparked fears of renewed instability in Bosnia.

Formerly the president of the country’s Serb-majority entity of Republika Srpska, Dodik was banned from holding public office after being convicted last year of defying decisions by the international envoy overseeing the 1995 peace agreement that ended the war.

With nearly 90% of votes counted, Dodik’s ally Željka Cvijanović of the rightwing Alliance of Independent Social Democrats had more than 55% of the votes to take one of the three seats in the country’s tripartite presidency, leading her nearest opponent by about 30 percentage points.

Speaking at a news conference late on Sunday, Dodik said his nationalist party would also hold a “vast majority” in Republika Srpska’s assembly, and credited US president Donald Trump’s “magnificent victory” in 2024 and Russian president Vladimir Putin’s support for the election win.

“No one should ask us to change our politics,” Dodik said. “We will not give up, but continue for our people … I cannot believe that we smashed it like this.”

About 3.4 million voters were eligible to choose the three members of the country’s multi-ethnic presidency, lawmakers for the national parliament and heads of institutions for the country’s two entities: the Muslim-majority Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska, which is dominated by ethnic Serbs.

With more than 94% of votes counted on Sunday, Darijana Filipović of the nationalist Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina held a commanding lead for the Croat seat on the presidency, while the incumbent Bosniak member of the presidency, Denis Bećirović of the Social Democratic party, led his nearest opponent, Bakir Izetbegović, by fewer than three percentage points.

Both Filipović and Bećirović declared victory in their races late on Sunday before all votes were counted.

Bosnia’s central election commission said that 1,432,269 votes were cast in total, a turnout of 42% that was down by about 8% from Bosnia’s last election in 2022.

Bosnia has a complex web of governing institutions that were created by a US-brokered peace agreement in 1995 in an effort to manage the ethnic divisions between Muslim Bosniaks, Orthodox Serbs and Catholic Croats that gave rise to the war.

Yet Dodik has consistently tested those limits, openly defying Bosnia’s national government in the capital Sarajevo and making moves for Republika Srpska to separate from the country.

At his party’s final election rally on Friday night in Banja Luka, Republika Srpska’s administrative capital, Dodik told supporters that Bosnia “is dead”.

“It is an impossible country. It doesn’t make any sense,” Dodik said at the rally, which was also attended by Russian ambassador Igor Khalabukov.

Such political and ethnic divisions – in which the country’s Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats largely vote along ethnic lines – have blocked Bosnia’s progress toward joining the EU despite the bloc’s efforts to encourage the country’s divided leaders to work together for reform.

Dragan Bursać, an analyst, said that despite Dodik not appearing on the ballot for the first time in nearly 30 years, he “is still in command. He is everywhere.”

“It is obvious that these measures to ban him from political life are not working, and he is using them,” Bursać said.

One of the poorest countries in Europe, Bosnia is still struggling to recover decades on from the war, which started in 1992 after the country declared independence from the Serb-led former Yugoslavia and ethnic Serbs took up arms to carve out their own state and join Serbia. The conflict killed more than 100,000 people and displaced millions.

Bosnia’s wartime wounds were recently revived by a public homage in Serbia and among Bosnian Serbs to the wartime army commander Ratko Mladić, who died in late August while serving a life sentence for genocide and other war crimes. %!s()

Israel, as well as British Jewish groups, lashed out on Sunday following the vote by the small political party. The Israeli government declared that it now views the left-leaning Greens as giving “legitimacy to terrorism”.

The Green Party, which received 6 percent of the vote in the UK’s national elections in 2024, said it regarded Zionism as “an ethnonationalist political project” and repeated its call for Britain’s Labour government to end all arms trade with Israel.

In a swift response, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the policy went “far beyond the boundaries of legitimate political debate” and called on other British political parties to condemn the resolution.

“The Greens have adopted not only the green of Hamas, but also its ideology: the elimination of the State of Israel through armed struggle,” the ministry wrote on social media.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog labelled the move “a disgrace and a shame”. Writing on social media, he said: “Those who claim the antisemitic lie that ‘Zionism is racism’ deliberately endanger Jews and Israelis everywhere.”

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said it is “not Zionism that’s racism, it is the Green Party”.

The Movement for Progressive Judaism, a British group, said: “The Green Party has made antisemitism party policy and become a racist party”.

It added that the support of some Jews for the motion did not mean it would not be used to discriminate against others.

During the vote, the Green Party also reaffirmed its “commitment to Palestinian liberation, the right of return, Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), and a full arms embargo against Israel”.

It also reiterated support for “the establishment of a single democratic state throughout historic Palestine”, the party said in a statement.

The motion was backed by a majority of 1,022 to 813. Party leader Zack Polanski, who is running for Parliament in former Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s London constituency, did not vote.

In an interview with UK media outlet Sky News, the Greens’ co-deputy leader Mothin Ali said that the heavy casualty toll during Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza and its ongoing attacks were the context for the vote.

The Green Party has five sitting members in the UK’s 650-seat parliament.

Following the passage of the resolution, Polanski and other Green Party members said in a joint statement they would “continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation” and “call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government”. %!s()

The Gunners have won just two of their opening seven matches in all competitions and sit 10th in the WSL table.

It is dismal reading for Arsenal fans, whose optimism has quickly diminished and their 4-2 defeat at City on Sunday added further salt to their wounds.

The Gunners have not won a WSL title since 2019 and it has been a familiar story each year as slow starts have ultimately proven costly.

Slegers did lead Arsenal to the Women's Champions League title in 2025. But they failed to win any domestic trophies last season, although they did finish second in the WSL and reached the semi-finals in the defence of their European crown.

Asked if she was worried about her position, Slegers said: "All I know so far is that the last couple of days we have been together as a club, and a team.

"We have been aligned in the direction. Of course, this result is disappointing but I'm here and I'm full of energy. I care a lot for the club and the players. I see perspective.

"It's good to have an international break coming up. It's good for the players to change environment, play their football elsewhere, then come back in with new energy."

At full-time on Sunday, Slegers gathered her dejected players in a familiar team huddle before walking over to their fans.

She stood in front of the 2,500 away supporters at Etihad Stadium applauding as they sang "North London Forever" in a somewhat emotional release.

She was greeted warmly and it did not look like a fanbase who were keen to push her out of the door.

Arsenal had performed reasonably well against City, took the lead twice and were ultimately undone by small margins.

"I mostly went there to thank them, connect with them and show them I care for them and I appreciate them coming out to Manchester," said Slegers.

"I also wanted to show that – not that I feel sorry for them as I'm a big part of it too – but they are coming here and not getting the rewards, just like the team.

"I just wanted to connect with them instead of walking away and hiding. I don't know how they are going to react to me! I just wanted to thank them for being there for us."

Outside of the stadium however, noise among the fanbase has been building and Slegers knows her position is being questioned.

Sources at the club insist she retains their full backing and, while there is disappointment and acknowledgement that results have not been good enough, they believe Slegers can guide them in the right direction.

There was investment in the transfer window with the likes of England international Georgia Stanway and Spain full-back Ona Batlle arriving, as well as the talented, young Germany forward Lisa Baum.

Those signings were made early in an attempt to ensure a full pre-season and avoid a slow start with most players returning to Arsenal from their holidays in mid-July.

It has clearly not paid off but rather than worry about her job, Slegers is already planning an inquest into where the problems lie during the international break.

"There will be a big review of our season so far," she added, when asked if there was a wider club issue regarding their continuous slow starts to WSL seasons.

Some of the issues have been obvious.

They had scored just twice in the WSL prior to Sunday's match and Alessia Russo's goal in the 49th minute against City was her first in the league this season.

That lack of ruthlessness has meant Arsenal have failed to win in their past four WSL games - their worst winless streak since October 2023.

Defeat by City also confirmed this as their second-worst start after five games in the WSL, only picking up fewer points (four) in 2014.

Confidence has clearly taken a hit and Wednesday's bizarre error from defender Leah Williamson summed up the chaotic nature of their season so far.

Emotions were high after their 2-2 draw with Paris FC in the Women's Champions League, so much so that Slegers did not show up for post-match media duties.

She later explained her actions, saying she was angry and felt the team needed her in that moment.

But despite the obvious concerns for Arsenal, Slegers was defiant on Sunday, stating she believes she remains the right person to lead the club.

"First of all, it's not about me anyway. I have energy, I feel the connection and I think we're going through a really difficult time but we also see perspective," she said.

"We look forward and see solutions. We see the closeness [of the squad]. It's not that we're totally away from it or off it, it's been consistently about margins.

"We have to work to get them on our side but when we do, I think we'll be really good. Of course, it's been a long run without the results we wanted.

"It's not about me, it's about the club and I care about the club." %!s()
