Wales' hopes of coping with the new schedule were not helped by a string of injuries, with stars such as Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon, Dylan Lawlor and Harry Wilson missing the entire camp and David Brooks dropping out of the squad after defeat by Portugal in the opening game.

Bellamy said Dan James was not fit enough to play against Denmark after he was left on the bench at the Cardiff City Stadium, and acknowledged Ben Davies probably should have been rested after he was withdrawn late on.

"If we have a few injuries, which we had more than one or two, they miss four games," said Bellamy.

"We can deal with two, do you understand? And then the squad will get really tested. The intensity of the squad, the athleticism, really I think [the four-game break] is designed for the elites.

"[They can] say, we can go, we can go, we can turn over these games really, really quickly and we can change, we can change [the team] like for like because we have the numbers. So, it puts a real stress on a lot of us."

Wales rarely looked like scoring against Denmark, who came close to breaking the deadlock on a couple of occasions before Hjolund's 75th-minute winner.

"On Thursday [against Norway] we were on the front foot so we're able to shorten distance," Bellamy added.

"Today, we just couldn't work it well enough, couldn't get the energy up enough to be able to have a bigger say in the game."

Danny Ward made fine saves from Hojlund and Gustav Isaksen to keep Wales level but it was the goalkeeper's error, and foul, which led to the penalty.

Bellamy, though, suggested the game had not swung on Ward's mistake, adding: "Obviously it's the decisive moment, but he made two incredible saves before that.

"I thought Denmark with the physicality were able to just crank it a little bit. You see their runs are really menacing, so I felt they were knocking on the door. He did incredibly well to keep it 0-0 to that time."

Despite defeat, Wales climbed to third in Nations League Group A4 courtesy of their head-to-head record against Norway after the Norwegians were beaten 2-1 in Portugal.

Larger cities began pulling off the wool that was covering their eyes earlier this year when investigations performed by authorities and media revealed how ALPR data was being used, and who was using it. One of the stories surrounded Dayton, Ohio, where officials found data was shared with the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Then its hometown newspaper found in its investigation of the cameras' data that several law enforcement agencies were conducting inappropriate searches. Search history included "immigration," "abortion," and cultural stereotypes.

As media outlets like us began covering the ALPR abuse use cases more often — especially after friend of Jalopnik, The Drive's Joel Feder, had an encounter with police in a Range Rover press car that Flock cameras had wrongfully flagged — more municipalities both city and county have been getting questioned by their own constituents as to how ALPR data was being used, and who was accessing it. Some outright demanded they get shut off. That escalated to the people taking matters into their own hands if their councils didn't take what they said to heart.

The topper to the ALPR disaster cake was when Florida, of all states and places, announced the takedown of its ALPRs on state highways. Texas ended funding for ALPR cameras as well, leaving some municipalities in a state of limbo regarding what to do with upcoming contract renewals. Now Flock contracts are being canceled or rejected faster than the vigilantes taking to tearing down the cameras in their areas.

The snowball effect of ending Flock contracts

It's been nearly impossible to keep up with how many cities and areas have nixed the system. Sites that are tracking the progress show differing numbers, all dependent on how they classify the cancellations of Flock cameras. Deflock.org, a site dedicated to mapping where ALPRs or LPRs are located in the United States, states there are 143,356 LPRs mapped in the country. It also states that 153 cities have rejected them, noted in a table as "Recent Victories." Newsweek used Deflock's data to better illustrate those rejections thus far. According to the data it's aggregated, 149 cities and counties canceled or rejected contracts, or deactivated the cameras in 2026, and that only accounts for January through August. More than half of those happened in the month of August alone.

The number is still growing. A quick search through the last month showed on September 29, Newburgh, New York, issued a resolution to end its contract with Flock Safety. South Lyon, Michigan, according to ClickOnDetroit, voted that same evening 5-2 in a city council vote to reject a renewal of its Flock Safety agreement. The week prior, another Michigan city, Sturgis, voted to let the contract expire, according to MLive. Boynton Beach, Florida, also voted in September to let its contract expire November 18, according to the Palm Beach Post. Many cite concern with privacy for its constituents as well as the flood of controversy surrounding the surveillance cameras

Even Flock's contracts are making people feel icky

The small town of Oberlin, Ohio, part of Lorain County, also announced at the end of September that it, too, would end its Flock Safety contract. The Oberlin Review reported that the end to the contract was not because of the related controversies or problems with the public's privacy and security, as the individuals protesting the cameras there have contested. Instead, it was due to an increase in pricing. Lorain County Sheriff Jack M. Hall told the paper, "The reason to terminate Flock specifically was the significant changes in the proposed user agreement by Flock, which swung the contract to benefit Flock in disputes. These disputes ranged from changing the venue of litigation from Lorain County to medication in Atlanta, and damage claim processes the county prosecutor's office was not comfortable with."

A change in contract could explain some of the recent accelerated ends to Flock contracts. Is anyone else also curious as to what would make the prosecutor's office uncomfortable? Not every Flock terminated contract is a win, though. A few cities and counties have just moved on to other, possibly more problematic ALPR systems, like Axon. You know, the makers of police body cameras. There's even more where that came from.

Is there a future without these cameras anywhere? It might be a far-distant dream, but maybe it's not impossible. Organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union continue to fight the good fight, helping the measly, supposedly nobody citizens of our country to take on the big bad local governments to put an end to this 24/7 seemingly all-access surveillance technology. If they can't help, Flock's reputation sure is doing god's work at getting themselves shut down. %!s()

Portugal host Denmark in their next Group A4 tie on 14 November, before visiting Wales three days later.

Ronaldo started the 1-0 opening-game win over Wales, but he was named as a substitute in Norway and told he may or may not come on. He was apparently angered at being made to warm up during the second half - and then not brought on.

It was the first time the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid forward had been an unused substitute for his country in a competitive game since 2008.

When Jesus announced in a news conference Ronaldo would not start against Denmark either, the veteran left the camp.

After Sunday's success against Norway which put them six points clear of second-placed Denmark in the table, goalscorer Joao Cancelo told RTP: "Cristiano is our captain, the best player Portugal has ever had.

"Things will certainly end in the best way [with him] but the important thing is the four victories."

Team-mate Nuno Mendes added: "Any player who comes to the national team is welcome, obviously. If Cris returns, we'll be here to receive him with open arms."

And in its admittedly small segment of non-luxury body-on-frame SUVs that can be had with three rows, it's arguably a class leader. The rivals

On the whole, the Sequoia tows more than either of its Chevrolet rivals, the ever-popular Tahoe and Suburban. They boast max trailering figures of around 8,000 pounds, with figures fluctuating depending on the power train. The absolute strongest comparable Chevy is the 2WD Tahoe with the 5.3-liter engine that can tow up to 8,400 pounds. Similarly, the GMC twins in the Yukon and Yukon XL can tow up to 8,400 and 8,200 pounds, respectively.

Ford

The new Ford Expedition, meanwhile, bests the Sequoia only when you equip it with a weight-distributing hitch. Ford's F-150-based SUV tows up to 7,000 pounds standard but up to 9,600 pounds if you get it with the hitch and forgo the 24-inch wheels. Nissan's entry, the Armada, falls short of the Toyota's capabilities by hundreds of pounds, with a max towing capacity of 8,500 pounds across the board.

Most of the time, the causes are poor signal strength, outdated carrier settings or physical barriers like walls or metallic veneers on glass.

What you can try during the call

First, check your volume and speaker output. The volume might simply be turned down, or you might not have turned speaker mode on. Next, glance at the signal bars. If those are low, move toward a window or more open space.

You might not have noticed that you have the option to adjust the voice mode during a call. Voice Isolation is available on the iPhone XR/XS and newer, as long as you have iOS 16.4 or later. It uses machine learning to block environmental noise, so your voice sounds more audible to the other person.

To activate it during a call, swipe down from the top-right to open Control Center and tap the small Phone Controls banner at the top of the screen. Then under Audio & Video, select Voice Isolation from the available options in the Mic Mode section. You can also choose Automatic, which has your phone adjust for what's best. 

Of course, since these options apply to your voice, their enhancements only apply for the person you're speaking to. If you're having trouble hearing the person on the other end of the call and they also have an iPhone, ask them to try this option (as well as the others discussed here, if their calls always sound poor). 

Set your device up for call success

Get a better cellular connection

If the nearest cellular tower is congested, your iPhone may connect to a more distant tower with a weaker signal. It could also cling onto a weak connection even when a stronger one is available. If your call drops or the sound is bad, end the call, then swipe down from the top-right to open Control Center. There, toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds and toggle it off again. This forces your device to reconnect to the cellular network, hopefully with a stronger signal.

Switch to Wi-Fi Calling

With Wi-Fi Calling, your call is handled by a Wi-Fi connection instead of a potentially weak cellular network. It's a great option if cell reception in parts of your home is poor. To enable it, open Settings > Apps > Phone, tap Wi-Fi Calling, then enable Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. Wi-Fi calling should hand off to your cellular network if you leave Wi-Fi range mid-call, but this isn't perfect, so you might experience drops.

Update your software

Apple regularly patches issues that may impact call quality. Check Settings > General > Software Update to make sure iOS is current. You should also check your for carrier settings updates in Settings > General > About. If an update's available, a prompt should appear within 15-seconds. Tap Update.

Restart your phone

The oldest trick in the book still works to fix a lot of issues, so try restarting your iPhone if you haven't in a while. If your iPhone uses a SIM card, pop the tray out with a paper clip to check for dust or a loose fit (while the phone is turned off). 

Physical checks

Test your microphone by recording yourself using the Voice Memos app. If that playback sounds clear, you know it's not a hardware problem. 

Clean the speaker grill and earpiece with a soft brush, and try a call without a case since thick or metal cases can interfere with antenna performance. Also, try using speakerphone during a call to see if that makes a difference.

Headsets and AirPods

Bluetooth headphones, including AirPods, share the 2.4GHz band with a multitude of other devices including mice, keyboards, microwaves and baby monitors. This network congestion can degrade call quality. Try making calls without your headphones and see if the audio is any clearer. Or if you've never made a call with headphones, try them to see if they perform better than the internal mic.

Hardware faults

Some iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models had high earpiece failure rates, which Apple addressed in a now-closed service program. Older iPhones with Intel modems (iPhone XR, XS or 11) may also have weaker signal strength. You can contact Apple if you think a hardware issue is causing your problem, but this will likely result in having to come into the store for a paid session. %!s()
