NHL Tonight: Game previews, stats, betting info for Tuesday - ESPN
tags:October is arguably the best month of the year for sports fans, and the NHL is doing its part Tuesday to create another special evening.
No, it's not the 16-game slate of the Frozen Frenzy, but there are 11 games on the calendar, including a number of tantalizing matchups between interconference contenders.
Here's a look at what you need to know for each contest, including betting info and broadcast details:
Odds are provided by DraftKings and subject to change.
San Jose Sharks at Montreal Canadiens
7 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | MTL -205, O/U: 6.5
After a visit to the Maple Leafs on Monday, Macklin Celebrini & Co. head to la Belle Province for a showdown against an as yet underperforming Canadiens team. Celebrini has had quite a bit of success against the Habs, with four goals and five assists in four games against Montreal in his career -- seven of those nine points came in the two matchups in 2025-26.
Colorado Avalanche at New Jersey Devils
7 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | COL -115, O/U: 6.5
The Avalanche and Devils have faced off 102 times in the regular season in their history -- and once in a Stanley Cup Final that was historic for its intensity as well as Ray Bourque finally winning a title.
Back to current events, any game against a top team like this is a good barometer for a Devils club that is still figuring out what this season is going to look like. And on the other side, whichever member of the Lumber Yard is in the crease, it'll be familiar territory as both are ex-Devils.
Anaheim Ducks at New York Islanders
7 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | NYI -166, O/U: 6.5
Just 24 hours after facing off against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, the Ducks will take to the ice at UBS Arena on Long Island before a date with the Devils on Thursday and finishing out their trip in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Specific to this game, it's a showdown between two of the top rookies from last season: Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer, who unanimously won the Calder Trophy, and Ducks winger Beckett Sennecke, who finished a point ahead of him in the rookie scoring race.
Los Angeles Kings at Washington Capitals
7 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | WSH -166, O/U: 5.5
The Kings -- a playoff team last season -- are still on the hunt for their first win of the season. Will it be Tuesday? Of note, L.A. lost both games against the Capitals last season (2-1 on Nov. 17 and 3-1 on Dec. 2).
Washington brings a two-game winning streak into this matchup. The Caps are getting contributions from all over, but two offseason additions are leading the goal-scoring charge: Alex Tuch (five goals) and Boone Jenner (four).
Toronto Maple Leafs at Columbus Blue Jackets
7 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | CBJ -162, O/U: 6.5
These teams made major news on the eve of opening night when they consummated a trade sending Kirill Marchenko to Toronto and Matthew Knies to Columbus (among six players moved in the swap).
Thus far, Marchenko has been the more lucrative player on the score sheet with nine points in nine games compared to four in seven for Knies. How do they each respond in this game -- and how do the Columbus fans welcome back Marchenko, who signaled an unwillingness to re-sign with the Blue Jackets, which led to the trade?
Winnipeg Jets at St. Louis Blues
8 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | STL -142, O/U: 5.5
Any game between Central Division foes is a must-watch, but the added wrinkle in any Jets game this fall is the Connor Hellebuyck saga. The latest, per ESPN's Emily Kaplan, is that there are three teams in the mix to trade for the former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner.
Though all of the off-ice business was generating buzz on message boards, the Jets are off to a 4-2-2 start, three points ahead of the Blues heading into this showdown. A key for the Blues? Scoring more than two goals. They've lost all four games in which they've scored two or fewer, and won three of the four in which they've scored more than two goals.
Boston Bruins at Dallas Stars
8 p.m. ET (ESPN) | DAL -170, O/U: 5.5
And speaking of U.S. Olympic goaltenders, this contest could feature a showdown between Boston's Jeremy Swayman and Dallas' Jake Oettinger. According to ESPN Research, Oettinger (187) and Swayman (138) and second and third, respectively, for the most wins by an American goalie since 2020-21 (behind Hellebuyck's 197).
On the goal-scoring side, there will be superstars on both sides as David Pastrnak (No. 8), Mikko Rantanen (15) and Jason Robertson (20) all landed in the top 20 of ESPN's annual player rankings.
Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers
9 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | EDM -130, O/U: 6.5
This matchup has even more star power, with Connor McDavid (No. 1), Leon Draisaitl (6), Quinn Hughes (9) and Kirill Kaprizov (10) all in the top 10. It would be a shocking outcome if either of these teams missed the playoffs, and Stathletes projects a 6.36% chance of the pair squaring off in the Western Conference finals this spring; that's the fifth-highest percentage of any WCF pairing.
The Wild won all three games in the season series in 2025-26 by a combined score of 13-5. How will Game 1 of the 2026-27 series go?
Detroit Red Wings at Seattle Kraken
9:40 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | SEA -118, O/U: 6.5
It has been an up-and-down season for the Red Wings, following one of the more chaotic offseasons for any team in recent memory. But, they're on a two-game win streak so maybe things are turning around?
Standing in their way of continuing that heater are the Kraken, who produced a 6-3 win over the Red Wings on Oct. 9. And don't look now, but the Kraken might be a real contender in the Pacific, holding down the No. 3 spot as we close in on a month into the campaign.
Carolina Hurricanes at Vancouver Canucks
10 p.m. ET (ESPN+) | CAR -278, O/U: 6.5
Some might look at that large number on the betting line and conclude that this game might be a blowout for the visiting Cup champs. Well, the Canes were -218 against the Flames on Sunday, and lost that one. So anything is possible.
If the Canucks are to present a real challenge Tuesday, they'll need to get back to their early high-scoring ways. After netting 17 goals in their first three games, they've scored 13 in the next seven.
Tampa Bay Lightning at Vegas Golden Knights
10:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) | VGK -112, O/U: 5.5
In the marquee matchup of the night, it's a potential Stanley Cup Final preview -- and in fact, Stathletes projects a 3.67% chance of this being the SCF matchup (which is third highest). The Lightning won the Cup in 2020 and 2021, and the Golden Knights won in 2023, and made the Cup Final in 2026.
The superstars will be out in this matchup. Jack Eichel (18 points through 10 games) and Mark Stone (14 through 10) are both scoring above career-best paces. Tampa's Nikita Kucherov (10 through eight) is off his usual pace near the league lead, but maybe he's due for a big night: his 1.86 points-per-game rate against Vegas is the highest of anyone against the franchise.
Reminder: Fans can catch all the action in the NHL streaming hub and on the ESPN App.

Today in hockey history
It's impressive when a pair or group of siblings all make it to the NHL. Some play together -- like the Tkachuks and two out of three Hughes' in 2026-27 -- while some remain on opposite teams.
On today's date in 1993, an otherwise standard-issue game between the Kings and Lightning (a 4-3 win for L.A.) has a fun aspect to it when checking the box score.
Specifically, it was the first game that Wayne Gretzky played against his younger brother Brent. The latter Gretzky would play only 13 games in the NHL, before bouncing around the IHL, AHL, ECHL and UHL (with a stint for Graz EC in the Austrian League thrown in for good measure).
