This spin on Cyclops is from a comic in which the Phoenix Force (which more famously possesses Jean Grey) is split into pieces by Iron Man, one of which inhabits this optic-blasting X-Men. After this, he and the rest of the Phoenix Five more or less become villains.

"Unleash devastating Optic Blasts, relentless close-range pressure, and the cosmic flames of the Phoenix Force. Scott Summers brings the heat to [Marvel Tokon]: Fighting Souls this Fall!" the X post announcing the character reads.

Additionally, we got a peek at the game's intro movie, and its anime-opening-style flair did not disappoint. It was animated by Sanzigen Studio (BanG Dream!, Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers), and its theme song, "Stronger As One," will be released on music platforms today.

Some major story details were provided as well. Marvel Tokon's main antagonist will be the Champion of the Universe (aka Tryco Slatterus), a relatively obscure character. In this incarnation, the Champion is obsessed with mastering "every fighting style across the cosmos." The single-player mode will follow five captains (the leaders of the game's pre-built four-character groups) trying to build a team to defeat the Champion of the Universe.

Lastly, we also got news that there will be crossover skins between Insomniac's Wolverine game and Tokon, with the fighting game receiving Wolverine's Battle Reborn suit.

The information was revealed at the “Behind the Battle” panel at SDCC, which was moderated by fighting game commentator and streamer Sajam in conversation with game producer Takeshi Yamanaka (Arc System Works), localization director Amber Seitz (Arc System Works), and senior product development manager Michael Francisco (Marvel Games).

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is a collaboration between Arc System Works (Guilty Gear, Dragon Ball FighterZ, BlazBlue), Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Marvel Games. The fighting game was announced during a Sony State of Play showcase last June, and will be released on Aug. 6 for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. This weekend, the game is getting an open beta across both systems that will feature 16 of its 20 characters, casual and ranked matches, training mode, local versus, lobbies, a tutorial, and the first three chapters of the game’s story mode.

As for where it fits into the genre, Marvel Tokon is a four-versus-four tag fighter. At the start of each match, players only have two out of their team's four characters unlocked. They can get the rest by fulfilling certain conditions, like breaking a wall or losing a round. Another unique element compared to other tag fighting games, like the beloved Marvel vs. Capcom series, is that characters on your team share a single health bar. That means you can play a single superhero (or villain) without switching to the others mid-fight. Of course, players may want to change their point character to deal with a disadvantageous matchup, or to mix up their opponent.

Based on Marvel Tokon's previous early-access play sessions, it incorporates elements from Arc System Works' previous games. It has mechanics from Guilty Gear Strive, like a wall break system. It also has several of Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising’s features aimed at beginners, such as autocombos. While some early-access players were dissatisfied with how restrictive the game felt in previous tests, Arc System Works announced system adjustments based on feedback from the closed betas.

However, the biggest controversy around the game is that it is unplayable in dozens of countries, with limited availability in countries that can't currently sign up for the PlayStation Network. We’ll see how those who can play the game feel about it after this weekend’s open beta, which begins at 3 a.m. EDT on July 24 and runs until 2:59 a.m. EDT on July 26 for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. %!s()

Trump delivered remarks on Thursday at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters, alongside Lee Zeldin, the agency’s administrator, and Chris Wright, the energy secretary. Other attenders included governors who signed on to the pledge, including Brian Kemp of Georgia, Mike DeWine of Ohio, Spencer Cox of Utah and Jeff Landry of Louisiana.

The pledge, first announced in March, was initially signed by seven tech companies: Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, OpenAI and Amazon. It will now cover companies delivering 80% of all power to US homes and businesses, according to the White House.

“We have kept rates down, way down,” said Trump.

Twenty-three Republican governors have signed on to the scheme, Trump announced on Thursday, as have major utilities including Nextera and Duke Energy, datacenter developers and electricity cooperatives.

“Electricity rates for 80% of the power distributed in America are now being kept in check by the plan,” Trump said at a press conference.

The announcement came amid a growing backlash to the artificial intelligence boom and the datacenters powering it, as electricity bills rise ahead of November’s midterm elections. In June, utility prices were up 4% year-over-year, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows.

On Thursday, Trump said “radical left communists” are the ones who “want to shut down all new development, kill our most successful industries, destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs, and surrender the AI race to China”.

Yet opposition to datacenters has become a bipartisan issue, with voters concerned about not only utility rates, but also the environmental and social impacts of AI.

More than a dozen states have considered moratoria on datacenters, and New York became the first US state to enact a temporary ban this month. Senator Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a representative, have also proposed a national moratorium. And on Thursday, Greg Abbott, the Republican governor of Texas, called for a ban on datacenter development in rural Texas; he is now among the governors who signed on to the pledge.

The pledge will “ensure everyone involved in building and powering data centers covers their own costs instead of passing them on to American families”, Taylor Rogers, a White House spokesperson, told the Guardian.

“The President’s bold action is turning datacenters into engines of growth for local communities, while cementing America’s dominance in the global AI race,” Rogers said.

Green groups are largely unimpressed with the non-binding pledge.

“The American people don’t care about the weak pledges and empty promises; they need relief from soaring energy bills month after month and real action from these companies to pay their fair share and bring down high costs,” said Patrick Drupp, climate policy director at the national environmental advocacy organization Sierra Club. “Today’s pledge is a paper-thin commitment to families who are struggling to keep the lights on as bills soar. The companies signing on have done nothing to show their work on how they will lower costs.”

Lena Moffitt, executive director of climate advocacy organization Evergreen Action, called Trump’s announcement a “photo op with big tech” that “won’t lower a single family’s electric bill”.

“Trump promised again and again to cut Americans’ energy costs, but instead he’s letting the same corporations driving up demand write their own rules – a voluntary pledge with no teeth and no consequences if they break it,” she said. %!s()

Two of the holiday season's biggest releases, "Dune: Part 3" and "Avengers: Doomsday," are on a collision course of "Barbenheimer"-like proportions come December 18 — but IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond thinks "Dune" already has the upper hand.

The third installment in Denis Villeneuve's series has already secured IMAX and IMAX 70mm screens for opening weekend, leaving Marvel's "Doomsday," which will bring back MCU Phase One characters to face off against Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), out in the cold.

Though "Doomsday" fans won't be able to see the movie in IMAX, Disney announced its own large-format, high-fidelity option in April: "Infinity Vision," which gives non-IMAX theaters with premium large-format screens Disney's technical seal of approval.

The Infinity Vision website describes it as a certification that will guarantee moviegoers an "exceptional film presentation."

"This includes big screens, with bright images and outstanding sound," the website states. "When you see the Infinity Vision badge, you know you are in for an incredible theatrical experience."

When asked about Infinity Vision, IMAX CEO Gelfond said his company is still the gold standard.

"It's not a new technological advance in any way; it's a marketing initiative, because Disney could not play 'Avengers' in IMAX because we had committed to 'Dune 3," Gelfond told Business Insider.

"Disney really wanted to figure out a way that they could market to audiences. So they created this initiative," he added. "It's not going to open an additional projection system. It's not going to add any special look or feel to the film. It is a way to market 'Avengers.' We'll find out if it works or not." 

Disney did not respond to a request for comment.

IMAX is on a hot streak lately, with filmmakers not only having their movies formatted for its screens, but also shooting on its cameras. Christopher Nolan has been the leader of this craze, shooting his latest movie, "The Odyssey," entirely with IMAX cameras — a first. "Dune: Part 3" is also riding the IMAX wave, with director Denis Villeneuve shooting select scenes with IMAX cameras.

IMAX tickets for movies shot at least partially in the format have been selling like hot cakes: Presales of "The Odyssey" in IMAX 70mm sold out within hours a year before the movie's opening. In the movie's opening weekend, IMAX reported earning $51.8 million globally for its showings, more than 20% of the movie's worldwide box office of $264.1 million.

"The numbers this movie is going to do for IMAX are going to be among the best numbers in IMAX history," Gelfond said of "The Odyssey."

Still, chances are, "Doomsday" will do just fine. Fellow Marvel release "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" will also not have any IMAX screens in the US when it opens on July 30, and it's on track to have a $200 million-plus opening at the domestic box office.

Vance Boelter, who pleaded guilty in June to the slaying of House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, was sentenced on Thursday. The 59-year-old also seriously wounded state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in the attacks in June of last year.

Victims and their friends and family shared how the Minneapolis-area attacks, which targeted several state Democratic officials, changed their lives in emotional comments on Thursday.

“The defendant looked me in the eyes and pulled the trigger. The defendant looked at my wife and chose to do the same,” Hoffman said in the courtroom. “My wife and I now live with injuries. We live with our bodies remembering the gunfire.”

US District Judge John R Tunheim said that the sentence was the longest he has ever imposed in thousands of cases, but that he believes “it is deserved”.

Boelter stated that he spent months identifying and stalking his planned targets. He then drove to their homes disguised as a police officer to carry out the attacks, which were followed by the largest police search in the Midwestern state’s history.

“I could not fathom why I was spared and [Hortman] was not,” said Democratic State Representative Kristin Bahner, who was on vacation when the attacker went to her home. “You failed because I carry her with me. In my mind and in my heart, she guides me.”

Federal defender Manny Atwal said that Boelter, who offered little reaction to the proceedings, showed his remorse by pleading guilty.

Family members of Mark Hortman expressed disappointment that Boelter could not be given the death sentence, which prosecutors agreed not to seek in exchange for a guilty plea.

“To every person I have caused loss, pain, heartache, confusion, sadness, shame, or loneliness, I am truly sorry,” said Boelter. %!s()

The survey found Democrats have a six-point edge on the congressional midterm ballot, with 20% undecided.

The majority of voters say Trump is a factor in their midterm votes for Congress, with 42% saying they will be votes against Trump and 22% saying they will be votes for him.

July 23Trump logged a 39% approval rating and 57% disapproval rating in an Emerson College poll of 1,100 likely U.S. voters taken July 19-20 (margin of error 2.9—Trump’s disapproval rating increased one point and his approval rating is unchanged over the past two months).

The poll also shows Democrats with an 11 percentage point advantage on the generic congressional ballot.

July 17Trump had a 40% approval rating and 59% disapproval rating, a one-point decline in his net approval rating from April, and a 38%/60% approval/disapproval rating on the economy, for a net approval rating of -22, his worst marks on the economy of his political career in CNBC polling (the latest survey of 1,000 voters was conducted July 8-12 and has a margin of error of 3.1).

The survey found 61% said they are pessimistic about the state of the economy and outlook for the future, the highest percentage since December 2023.

July 16Trump’s 37% approval rating and 61% disapproval rating is the same as it was in April, according to a Washington Post/Ipsos poll released Thursday, with approval ratings on the economy, immigration and the war with Iran all below 40% (the survey of 2,648 U.S. adults was taken July 8-13 and has a margin of error of 1.9).

Less than half, 48%, of Americans say the economy will improve in the next year, and 43% said they are worse off financially than they were when former President Joe Biden was in office.

June 19The latest Associated Press-NORC poll found Trump had a 37% approval rating, consistent with May, while his 34% approval rating of his handling of the Iran war was also unchanged from last month (the latest poll of 3,040 U.S. adults was conducted June 11-17 and has a margin of error of 2.8).

More than half, 53%, of respondents said U.S. military action against Iran has gone too far, a six-point decrease from March, shortly after the U.S. launched attacks against Iran on Feb. 28.

The survey was taken as Iran and the U.S. reached a tentative agreement to end the war, which has brought some immediate economic relief, including a drop in gas prices, though questions remain about whether Trump will ultimately achieve any of his stated objectives for attacking Iran in the first place—namely curbing its nuclear program.

June 15Trump’s approval rating ticked up one point, to 36%, in a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken June 12-15 compared to the groups’ previous poll taken June 3-8, as his approval was boosted on his handling of cost of living from 20% in the poll released May 18, to 24% in the latest survey (the poll of 1,537 U.S. adults has a margin of error of 3).

Trump had a 40% approval rating at the end of February, before the U.S. launched strikes against Iran.

June 8Trump logged a 35% approval rating and 63% disapproval rating in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll of 4,531 U.S. adults taken June 3-8 (margin of error 2).

The latest results are unchanged from Trump’s approval/disapproval rating in the groups’ mid-May poll and one point above his record-low approval rating of 34% for his second term, in April.

The poll found 59% of respondents expect gas prices—which have worsened amid the Iran war—to rise more over the next year because of the conflict.

The poll also found 22% of Americans are satisfied with Trump’s handling of cost of living, less than the 29% who approved of Biden’s handling of the issue when he left office.

June 3Trump’s approval rating declined one point, to 38%, and his disapproval rating increased two points, to 62%, in a new Marquette Law School poll, compared to its April survey (the latest poll of 1,001 adults was conducted May 20-26 and has a margin of error of 3.4).

Trump’s approval rating in the May poll is a low point among the nine polls Marquette Law School has conducted in Trump’s second term.

His approval rating on the economy slipped two points, to 30%, from April and his rating on inflation was also down two points, to 22%, while 19% approve of his handling of gas prices in the latest poll.

June 2Trump’s approval rating increased one point from the 42% low-point reached during his second term in April in the latest Harvard CAPS/Harris poll (the survey of 1,725 registered voters was conducted May 29-31 and has a margin of error of 2.4).

Trump’s approval rating is similar to former President Joe Biden’s at this point in his term. Biden had a 38% approval rating in July 2022, according to Gallup.

He experienced a sharp drop in support with the announcement of his so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs in April last year, and again since the start of the Iran war at the end of February. Voters’ economic concerns have remained high throughout Trump’s second term, and the Iran war has coincided with an increase in negative views of the economy as gas prices have skyrocketed since the start of the conflict. Trump’s sagging approval rating comes as Democrats have a chance at outperforming Republicans in midterms, with Emerson’s May poll showing Democrats with a 9-point advantage on the generic congressional ballot, though 9% of voters were undecided. %!s()
