How Kim closed out Genesis Scottish Open victory

MacIntyre joined Fitzpatrick in birdieing the par-five first and briefly moved into the solo lead when his playing partner bogeyed the next, only for Kim - playing in the group ahead - to pull level by posting two birdies in his first four holes.

Kim extended his lead by taking advantage of the par-five seventh and rolling in from 15 feet to also birdie the 10th, as MacIntyre lost ground with four bogeys in a seven-hole stretch from the fourth.

Lee had followed a front-nine 34 by matching Kim's birdie at the 12th and added another at the 14th, briefly getting him within one, only for Kim to make a six-foot birdie at the 16th and par his final two holes to set the winning total.

"I played probably as good as I could have down the stretch with the pressure," Kim said. "I executed where I needed to. I'm very proud of myself for just being calm up there and just treating each shot as every shot out there."

Fitzpatrick mixed four birdies with three bogeys in his one-under 69, while MacIntyre followed a 30-foot eagle at the 12th with two late birdies to also end the week on 13 under.

Thorbjornsen and Victor Perez - who finished tied-ninth - joined Keefer in claiming spots for the final men's major of the year, while defending champion Chris Gotterup and US Open winner Wyndham Clark fell to tied-11th and tied-13th respectively after one-over 71s.

'I'm so bad at golf' - McIlroy finds fix required for The Open

McIlroy held a share of the lead but slipped out of contention after a fog-affected third-round 73 that contained just one birdie, with the world No 2 finishing five strokes back despite a nine-shot improvement during the final round.

He cited the struggles of playing in a left-to-right wind for the inconsistency with his irons, as he has at various points this season, with McIlroy keen to address the issue heading into Royal Birkdale.

"Didn't finish the third round off today particularly well, sort of pieced it together, realised what I was doing, tried to figure it out a bit on the range before I went out for my final round," McIlroy admitted.

"At least I know what I'm doing, its a matter of trying to rectify it. Obviously there was some good in there today but there was some bad as well, so I'm going to need to work a little bit over the next couple of days.

"It was feeling good coming in here [with the irons] and it was good. I hit some really good iron shots over the first couple of days but the more I hit balls in a left to right wind, the more that [issue] starts to show itself and then it's a bit of a struggle from there."

When is The Open live on Sky Sports?

But here's the rub - each has a different idea about how Jude Bellingham should best be utilised for England to try to achieve that goal. While the Real Madrid star has traditionally wanted a much freer role to influence the game, the head coach has told him to work within the team system he has devised.

Tuchel's deliberate tactic has been to use more stick than carrot with his talisman, to try to mould him into an ever-better player. His praise has always been measured, monitored and carefully targeted. Like an over-strict father to his precocious son, who can't quite find it in himself to praise his brilliant offspring in public.

The German coach has very rarely praised Bellingham's ability, nor his unique capacity to inspire his team-mates and drive the side on to a higher level. Instead, he has focused his compliments on the moments when Bellingham has toed the line, sacrificed himself for the team, worked tirelessly off the ball.

And, it could be argued, it has worked. Bellingham has been the best form of himself for England at this World Cup - eclipsing his performances for Real where the Galactico spirit hails all things individual, all things superstar.

If you look at his statistics from the quarter-final, you get the full picture of what a complete player he is. As well as the obvious attacking prowess, where he scored more goals, had more shots, more shots on target, and had more touches in the opposition box than anyone else on the pitch, he also won more duels and was second for the number of times he successfully pressured an opponent in their own half. Tuchel can claim much credit for that all-round dominance.

The battle of wills between the two has lasted for more than 18 months. At its worst moment a year ago, it led to Tuchel ill-advisedly saying his own mother sometimes finds Bellingham "repulsive" on the pitch. That really upset Bellingham, and his family. Tuchel apologised, and it has now been mostly smoothed over.

It seemed bizarre in October when Tuchel went to extremes to try to force his message through to his star man by dropping him from the England squad completely for the friendly against Wales and the World Cup qualifier against Latvia.

Forty-eight hours before Tuchel announced his Bellingham-free squad, the 22-year-old had been named England's player of the year. Pointedly, Tuchel didn't sugarcoat the message by suggesting that maybe Bellingham needed a rest, or that he was nursing an old injury.

"Team spirit is the key factor in the end," said Tuchel at the time, emphasising he wanted to stick with the players who had done well in the previous camp, when Bellingham was unavailable because of a shoulder injury.

Was that clever man-management from Tuchel? Give the superstar a kick when his nation didn't need him, so that he is even more motivated right now when England need him desperately?

Back to this World Cup, and after the quarter-final win over Norway in Miami, Bellingham bristled when I asked him his thoughts on what Tuchel had said - namely, that overall the boss thought it was a "sloppy" team performance, and that England had ridden their luck. Bellingham's spiky response fired back, saying Tuchel didn't know what it was like to play in a top-level knockout game in temperatures that were the equivalent of 44 Celsius.

Was that a dig at the fact Tuchel's short and unspectacular playing career in Germany never hit the heights before a knee injury forced him to retire at the age of 25? Probably. Bellingham had won La Liga, the UEFA Super Cup and the Champions League by the age of 22.

There was mitigation for both, in what each said post match. And both were correct in their sentiment. Bellingham was utterly drained. He had given his all, and then some. You could see it in his eyes. And he was still elated from making it to his first World Cup semi-final, when in walked the Sky Sports News journalist to tell him that his boss had just said he wasn't happy with the performance. Bellingham's response was perfectly understandable.

As for Tuchel, he was right to say that England's performance was lacking quality [with the notable exception of Bellingham and a handful of others], that England rode their luck with Norway's disallowed goal and the mysterious "spidercam wire" shenanigans. He was also absolutely correct to suggest England will need to play much better if they are to beat Argentina in the semi-final, and then either Spain or France in the World Cup final. It was a spontaneous spilling of bile, but it was also a call to arms for the squad.

Bellingham was right too. He felt that Tuchel was diminishing the Goliath-like effort that he and his England team-mates had put in, in the most humid and difficult conditions that any of them had ever played in. Bellingham speaking up for his team-mates, praising their efforts and sheer will to win was admirable. And ironically, it was exactly the sort of collective-feeling Tuchel had been calling for from the Real man for months.

So, forget any suggestion there is a rift between Tuchel and Bellingham. There isn't. There are just two hyper-competitive, super-passionate sportsmen, at the top of their game, driving each other to new heights. This love-hate relationship has been going on ever since The Football Association appointed a new head coach 18 months ago.

It comes after concerns over the UK's largest and fastest growing outbreak that happened in Kent earlier this year.

So who needs the vaccine and what's in it?

What's the vaccine and is it safe?

The vaccine offers protection against a dangerous strain of meningitits called meningitis B (MenB) that caused the outbreak in Kent.

The vaccine does not contain any live bacteria and cannot cause meningitis.

It is common to get some swelling, redness or tenderness where you have the injection. You may also get a mild fever, nausea, headache or muscle aches but these symptoms should disappear after one or two days.

More serious side effects are rare.

How can I book?

Bookings can be made at high street pharmacies across England from Monday 13 July, with the first appointments available from Monday 20 July.

Seventeen and 18-year-olds can book via the NHS National Booking Service, external if they are already registered with a GP, external.

Other students under the age of 25 who are heading to a residential college or university this autumn for the first time can also contact a participating pharmacy.

You can get a walk-in MenB vaccine at a pharmacy if you were born on or after 21 July 2001, and for the first time this autumn you are:

• starting university

• starting at a further education college as a residential student

International students and students from elsewhere in the UK (Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man) who will be studying in England are also eligible, as well as those who are travelling abroad to study.

You do not need to be registered with a GP surgery to use the walk-in service.

Who can get the MenB vaccine?

The vaccine, given as two doses and at least 28 days apart, is being offered to 17 and 18-year-olds in sixth form and students under the age of 25 who are heading to a residential college or university this autumn for the first time.

Both doses are needed for the fullest protection.

A million young people are expected to be eligible for the vaccine in England, including:

• people born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008

• people born on or after 21 July 2001 and starting university for the first time this autumn

• people born on or after 21 July 2001 who are starting at residential further education colleges for the first time this autumn

Why are students advised to get the vaccine?

The meningitis outbreak that happened in Kent in March has been described as unprecedented and explosive.

Within weeks, in Kent, there were 29 confirmed or suspected cases and two deaths.

That's why the new, one-off campaign is being launched - to help protect those at greatest risk and hopefully prevent something like this from happening again.

Students in their first year of university have a risk that is about seven times higher than that of young people of a similar age who do not go to university, says NHS England.

Meningitis infections can be spread through close contact - for example though kissing, sharing vapes and drinks or living in close quarters with a person with the bug.

UK health officials say the risk to 18-year-olds or those entering university or a residential college for the first time is higher because of increased mixing of social groups and shared accommodation.

How dangerous is MenB?

MenB infection can cause serious, life-threatening problems including inflammation of the lining of the brain (meningitis) and blood poisoning (sepsis).

It can lead to life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss and brain damage, and in some cases can be fatal.

Vaccination can save lives.

Why not all teens?

The MenB vaccine was added to the UK NHS childhood immunisation programme for babies born on or after 1 July 2015. All babies are now offered it.

But it means teenagers and young adults over the age of 11 have not received this jab.

Young babies are vaccinated because they are more likely to get invasive infections more often than other age groups, and their bodies are less likely to be able to fight them off.

However, research suggests the MenB vaccine doesn't necessarily prevent transmission of the infection from person to person, doesn't target all the different B bacteria strains and doesn't provide long-term protection.

UK vaccine experts have therefore concluded that it isn't cost effective to offer the MenB vaccine to all adolescents.

But they do want everyone who is eligible to come forward and get the vaccine because it can prevent serious illness.

Around 10,000 people in the Kent region will have already received jabs, as part of the response to the March outbreak.

What about the rest of the UK?

Each nation has its own plans, external, but all are offering the vaccine to most pupils completing Year 13 or S6 in the summer of 2026 - irrespective of their education plans and including people from this age group who are not currently in school.

Young people aged 18-25 starting university or moving into residential further education settings for the first time in autumn 2026 are also eligible.

In Wales, those aged 17-18 will receive a letter from health boards from early July, while those aged 18-25 who are entering higher education will need to contact their health board later in July.

What about other types of meningitis?

Meningitis can be caused by many different types of viruses or bacteria, which are spread through close contact with a person who has them.

Viral meningitis tends to get better on its own within seven to 10 days. It can often be treated at home with plenty of rest, painkillers and anti-sickness medicine.

Bacterial meningitis needs to be treated in hospital.

Outbreaks are thankfully rare.

Currently, a separate vaccine covering different strains, the MenACWY vaccine, is offered routinely to 14-year-olds. %!s()

That is why scientists at the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre (SGBC) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) believe they have taken an important step towards filling one of neuroscience's biggest gaps.

They have produced what they describe as the world's most detailed three-dimensional atlas of the human brainstem at cellular resolution - a digital map that lets scientists travel seamlessly from MRI scans of the whole brain to individual nerve cells.

Called Anchor (Atlas of Neurochemical Characterisation of the Human Brainstem with 3D Reconstruction), it combines more than 500 tissue sections from foetal, childhood and adult brains.

Built from high-resolution microscope images rather than costlier molecular techniques, it creates a detailed three-dimensional map of the brainstem, identifying more than 200 clusters of brain cells and nerve pathways.

Eight chemical markers help distinguish different cell types, producing one of the clearest pictures yet of this vital, but poorly, understood part of the brain.

The brainstem occupies only a sliver of the brain, yet it keeps people alive. It links the brain to the spinal cord and controls breathing, heartbeat, sleep, wakefulness and movement.

Damage to tiny clusters of cells within it can prove catastrophic, but the region's densely packed architecture has long frustrated efforts to map it in detail.

Anchor's importance lies not simply in producing another anatomical map, but in linking two worlds that have largely remained separate: medical imaging, which shows the brain as a whole, and cellular pathology, which reveals it one cell at a time.

"We are seeing a visionary programme that puts India at the international table," says Shubha Tole, an Indian neuroscientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, describing the project as an "unprecedented integration" of engineering, neuroscience and medicine.

Doctors typically begin by examining the whole brain at autopsy or tissue removed during neurosurgery. An adult brain weighs about 1.2-1.5kg, and its folds and major structures can reveal important clues before microscopic examination begins.

"As a neuropathologist, I begin by examining an entire brain with the naked eye before looking at small pieces under the microscope," says Rebecca Folkerth, who is affiliated with Harvard Medical School and New York University and collaborated with the SGBC team.

"For Alzheimer's disease, we may examine only 15 to 20 sections - just a fraction of a percent of the whole organ."

That has been the practice since the pioneering work of Spanish neuroscientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal more than a century ago. Modern MRI reveals the whole brain but lacks cellular detail; microscopes reveal individual cells but only in isolated slices.

"What the Indian centre has created is essentially what I dreamed of early in my career - to have brain scans match the brain's microscopic anatomy," Folkerth, who has examined thousands of brains over more than three decades, told the BBC.

Anchor attempts to close that gap.

Users can zoom from the whole brainstem seen on MRI down to individual neurons while maintaining their precise spatial relationships. The researchers have made the atlas freely available online, external, hoping it becomes a reference tool for neuroscientists, neurologists and neurosurgeons worldwide.

Its applications could also extend well beyond anatomy.

By comparing healthy brainstem maps with diseased tissue, scientists may better understand disorders ranging from Parkinson's disease and stroke to Alzheimer's disease and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). More precise maps could also help neurosurgeons navigate one of the brain's most delicate regions with greater confidence.

Anchor is not a diagnostic tool. Instead, its greatest value lies in the questions it could help answer.

Partha Mitra, a brain scientist at the prestigious New York-based Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory who has worked with SGBC, says detailed brain atlases like this could have a "transformative impact" on the study of neurological disease by revealing, cell by cell, how brains affected by conditions such as Alzheimer's or autism differ from healthy ones.

They could also help explain how infections, including Covid-19, trigger long-term neurological damage, Mitra told the BBC.

Using brain stroke as an example, Folkerth says the atlas has uncovered new features that could help doctors preserve brain tissue that is injured but not yet beyond repair, potentially improving patient outcomes. Other scientists say the atlas could also help neurosurgeons navigate the brainstem more safely.

Part of this atlas's appeal lies in its simplicity. Built from high-resolution images of thin slices of post-mortem brain tissue, the approach makes detailed, cell-level mapping affordable.

That, says Mitra, has made it possible to chart the human brainstem at an unprecedented scale.

The achievement reflects a broader transformation in neuroscience, where progress increasingly depends as much on engineering and computation as on biology.

Around 20 scientists spent 18 months at SGBC manually analysing more than 200 brain sections, combining MRI scans, microscopic anatomy and 3D reconstruction into a single digital atlas. The centre now brings together more than 200 researchers, engineers and technicians working with collaborators around the world.

The result helps address a surprising gap in neuroscience.

Scientists have mapped the brains of several animal species in remarkable detail, but the human brain remains comparatively under-charted because detailed studies of human brain tissue are scarce, Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam, who heads the SGBC, told the BBC.

That does not mean scientists have lacked brain atlases. "Different atlases do different things," says Mitra.

MRI-based atlases capture the brain's broad structure but not individual cells. Histological atlases map its architecture at cellular resolution using microscopic images of tissue slices. Newer molecular approaches go a step further, identifying the precise identity of each cell.

But scientists still know remarkably little about how the brain's roughly 20,000 proteins are distributed across different regions and cell types - a frontier likely to define the next generation of brain mapping.

"Every brain," says Folkerth, "is a treasure chest of new knowledge."

The SGBC now plans to image more than 100 whole human brains across different stages of life and neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and dementia, creating a reference library that could reveal how disease reshapes the brain cell-by-cell.

The new atlas will not solve the mysteries of the human brain. But by giving scientists a far more detailed map, it may help them ask - and eventually answer - better questions. %!s()
