The SPR fell by 6.1 million barrels to 298.7 million barrels last week, according to data released by the Department of Energy on Monday. The reserve, created in 1975, is at its lowest level since January 1983.

President Trump ordered the release of 172 million barrels in March after Iran choked off oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, triggering the largest disruption of crude oil supplies in history.

The drawdown in the SPR, whose authorized storage capacity is 714 million barrels, has raised questions about whether U.S. government stockpiles are on the verge of depletion. The minimum amount of oil needed to safely operate the SPR is about 70 million barrels, an Energy Department spokesperson told CNBC in July.

There is enough oil left in the SPR to do another release if needed, said David Goldwyn, who served as a State Department special envoy for international energy affairs under President Barack Obama. 

"I'm not worried about the stability of the reserve or our ability to do another drawdown, if we needed to," Goldwyn told CNBC.

The SPR stood at around 415 million barrels before the U.S and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28. U.S. government stocks will fall to around 243 million barrels when the release Trump ordered is completed.

The SPR's operational capability is at risk due to aging infrastructure, according to a May report from the Government Accountability Office. More than a quarter of its inventory was "not available for drawdown due to a combination of construction outages and cavern outages" as of December 2025, GAO investigators found.

That implied that a minimum of 103 million barrels in the SPR today are not available for use, according to a July analysis by Rapidan Energy.

"The SPR's drawdown, distribution and fill capabilities are currently limited and are at risk going forward due to longstanding issues with aging infrastructure compounded with ongoing major construction intended to address them," the GAO warned in the report.

U.S. presidents have ordered massive releases from the SPR with growing frequency in recent years. President Joe Biden deployed 180 million barrels to address energy market volatility after Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022. That was the largest release in the history of the SPR.

The GAO described the release in response to the Ukraine war as an "unplanned stress test" for the SPR.

"When you do a drawdown, then you accelerate kind of the degradation of the wells themselves and some of the equipment," Goldwyn said. "It's like anything else — you use it a lot, you have to maintain it." %!s()

Gay retired hurt with a shoulder problem when playing for Durham in their One-Day Cup game against Middlesex last Friday.

The left-hander had a scan on Saturday, revealing no serious damage.

It was initially thought he would not play in Beckenham, but instead travel to the match to be around the medical team for further treatment and assessment.

However, he will now tune up for the Test in his first red-ball match since the series against New Zealand concluded at the end of June.

As one of the England Test team not taking part in The Hundred, Gay's appearance for the PCC XI was planned before he suffered the shoulder injury.

Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir will also play at Beckenham.

Gay's fitness is welcome news for England, who had already been forced into a reshuffle following the retirement of former captain Ben Stokes and a knee injury to Jacob Bethell that has forced the batter out of the three-Test series.

Jordan Cox will take Bethell's place at number three, while Dan Lawrence will bat at six and bowl his off-spin as England make a first attempt to balance their team without Stokes.

England are likely to field four frontline seamers at Headingley, probably Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson.

While Tongue and Atkinson could be playing in the latter stages of The Hundred over the weekend, Archer was rested from Southern Brave's final game against Trent Rockets on Monday.

With Brave already eliminated, it means Archer has more than a week off before the first Test.

Like Gay and Bashir, Robinson has not been part of The Hundred. Robinson's wife is due to give birth to their first child, but England are planning for the 32-year-old to be available at Headingley.

These plans can change quickly. England named Jamie Smith in their XI for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval in June, only for Smith to pull out following the birth of his second child.

Headingley will mark the return of Joe Root as full-time captain, while Marcus Trescothick acts as interim head coach before Stephen Fleming takes charge for the winter tour of South Africa.

New Zealander Fleming will arrive in the UK in September, but there is no clarification on whether he will be here before the end of the Pakistan series. %!s()

• The MCPura is far more than just a pretty face, but it lacks the speed to keep up with the better-known exotic sports cars, which have become insanely quick.

Overview

While its twin-turbocharged Nettuno V-6 engine makes a stout 621 horsepower, that's not all that much power in this crazy world of gasoline and EV 1000-hp road monsters. It's not enough for the Maserati to keep up with the fastest of today's Ferraris and McLarens. Still, the MCPura's performance is exciting, and its sharp handling makes for great fun and big thrills, be that on a racetrack or on a twisty road.

The MCPura serves as the Maserati brand's flagship sports car, a showcase of everything that its engineers can do. It's offered in both coupe and hard-top Cielo convertible body styles, and both offer a premium cabin built for two. Speaking of premium, cargo space is hard to come by in the MCPura, which could limit its appeal as a long-distance grand tourer. Then again, it's so enjoyable to drive; just send the luggage ahead.

Power for the MCPura comes from a superb twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 rated for 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. Featuring a unique twin-combustion system borrowed from Formula 1 race cars, the 90-degree V-6 engine is paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to all that power, the MCPura's handling is race-car sharp. Despite this, the MCPura won't punish you with an overtly flinty ride, twitchy handling, or unforgiving throttle response; with the adaptive suspension set in its most comfortable mode, the chassis is forgiving enough to consider driving it on a daily basis or taking it on a road trip. On our recent test drive in northern Italy, we noted that while the MCPura doesn't have the outright, borderline insane pace of rivals such as the McLaren 750S or Ferrari 296 GTB, it is so characterful that speed takes a back seat on the importance hierarchy.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Once you get past the upward-opening butterfly-style dihedral doors, you’ll find the MCPura’s interior to be driver-focused and refreshingly free of gimmickry and extraneous features. The overall interior design is clean and minimalist, with the carbon-fiber-finished central tunnel sporting only a few critical controls, including the prominent drive mode selector.

Upscale materials include leather seats with contrasting stitching, aluminum pedals, and carbon-fiber trim. There is no rear seat, and cargo space is limited.

Cargo Capacity: Luggage capacity is limited to just 5 cubic feet total between the front and rear cargo areas, so road trips mean taking only the essentials.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The MCPura comes with a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a separate 10.3-inch digital gauge display. The horizontally oriented touchscreen is tucked under the air vents in the center of the dashboard and runs Maserati's latest Google-based interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both included.

The Maserati Connect app provides 24/7 information regarding vehicle health and service status via a smartphone or smartwatch, or Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant at home. A six-speaker audio system is standard; a Soner Fabus 12-speaker system is available.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Few driver-assistance features are available on the MCPura, as its focus is on performance rather than day-to-day use.

Save On A Bunch Of Great MTG Commander Decks

If you’re keen on the new Marvel Super Heroes set, three of the decks are discounted. Wakanda Forever, which stars Black Panther, is now $58.42, while there are also discounts on Fantastic Four and Avengers Assemble at $54 and $65, respectively.

I am… curious to know what happened. The obvious explanation is that PiqFocus employ or commission a variety of people with different tastes and interests – some are passionate about recreating the charming orange-black livery of the Gulf Fritillary, while others really get a kick out of things like *checks notes* "bile fermentation" and the concept of a floating "clot bazaar" where people gather to trade dried blood.

Still, I'd love to hear that some Lepidarium writer just went a bit screwy after researching 160,000 varieties of moth. I picture them giggling over the Wikipedia page for human botflies. Myself, I'm a fan of both creature collecting sims and colonisable dead gods. What can I say – I contain multitudes.

The Carcass is out tomorrow on Steam, but I figured you'd like to hear about it now because there's still a demo as of writing, and this does feel like a game you'll want to Try Before You Buy. "The corpse is your world," explains the Steam page. "A continent of rotting organs, bone corridors, and forgotten chambers, rendered in retro terminal ASCII with authentic CRT glow."

You will "harvest biomass, calcium, bile, and neurons" as you seek to transform your seemingly not wholly dead surroundings into a tumorous sunken city, populated by factions of citizens with different traits and skills. You will research "combat, production, diplomacy, and forbidden arts", unlocking occult mutations as you send forth permakillable warriors to exterminate the other parasites squirming for possession of the divine cadaver. And the more you do these things, the more the carcass will "understand" you. "There are five main endings - "Dominion. Symbiosis. Awakening. Escape. Transcendence." - together with four secret ones.

The devs add that this is aimed at people who like Caves of Qud, Dwarf Fortress, Cultist Simulator, and Sunless Sea. I'd add Anoxia Station to that list - "fraught, delphic, and emotionally crushing" insectoid petro-horror. In general, it feels like a good pick if you like overripe "hand-written" descriptions (incidentally, there's no generated AI usage disclosure on the Steam page).

I'll be giving it a go. Perhaps I will buy that Lepidarium game and run them side by side – apparently, there's the option to release your butterflies and moths from the app, so they can flutter around your desktop. We shouldn't have to choose between looking at a Snowberry Clearwing and quarrying a slain deity's gizzards. %!s()
