Making her debut in 2010, Knight has gone on to win 320 caps for England, while she captained the side from 2016 to 2025, most notably leading the team to a memorable victory in the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup on home soil.

"It's a huge moment, isn't it? She has been one of the greats to ever play for England," former team-mate Farrant said on Sky Sports Cricket.

"She's been so integral to England cricket and women's cricket in general over the last 16 years her career has spanned.

"She would have wanted to go out on her own terms. Not a lot of people are able to do that, and she loves Test match cricket as well, so to be able to play a Test match at Lord's - the first - I'm not surprised by the decision

"England are going to really miss her."

'Gritty', 'hardy' Knight loved the tough times

Farrant added: "I think it will be that 2017 World Cup title here [at Lord's] that will be remembered forever.

"And actually, she came in at a tough time, to follow Charlotte Edwards as England captain is no easy thing to do. For her to be able to galvanise that team quickly and win that World Cup.

"Something that I always admired about her is she was so gritty on the pitch, such a hardy cricketer.

"She loved those tough times, and felt that that's what made her a better cricketer."

Knight is currently ranked third among England's all-time leading run-scorers in T20I and ODI cricket, while she was also the first English player to score centuries in all three formats.

But Farrant also stressed that it was Knight's often 'unnoticed' work off the field that she would most remember her for.

"Playing under her, she was such a good leader - more so for the things that she did off the field," Farrant added.

"She was one of, if not the hardest worker in training, with her fitness.

"As a young player coming through, you can get swept up in international cricket, can't you? And you can lose the bits of your life - your friends, your family - because you're so immersed in it.

"I always had an admiration for Heather as she always had such a lovely balance between working hard - making sure you did everything, so you're ready to be on that pitch - but also the other stuff when we went away on tour, making sure as a captain we got to go and immerse ourselves in the culture of this new country we were in.

"They're the memories that I'll have of her. Not just on the pitch, but the stuff that she did off the pitch. The things that go a little bit unnoticed sometimes."

'Good timing for Knight retirement'

Fellow former England international, Ebony Rainford-Brent, also labelled Knight as a "great" but believes it's the right time for her to retire.

"My first thought was good timing, to be honest," Rainford-Brent said. "I think it's really important to go out on a high.

"She has done so much for the game. She's captained here in a World Cup final win at Lords.

"She would have hoped they could have won again on home soil [in the T20 World Cup], but she got to the final, and I think she's just looking forward, thinking, 'I've got a lot to give off the field and I've given everything on it'.

"Go out when your name is still at its peak. There's nothing worse than players who kind of drag it out." %!s()

Police investigating the alleged murder of Ann Widdecombe say there is "nothing to suggest it was politically motivated".

Devon and Cornwall Police added they are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death, following the arrest of a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Saturday.

The former MP and MEP, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday, having sustained serious injuries. Police believe she had been attacked almost 24 hours earlier.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said officers remained "open-minded" about a potential motive and that there was not thought to be any threat to the wider public.

The arrest was carried out shortly after 21:00 BST by officers at Counter Terrorism Police North East and South Yorkshire Police, on behalf of the force.

There is no information to suggest the attack on Widdecombe was terrorism-related, Longman told reporters on Sunday.

The family of the former Conservative minister, and later Reform UK spokesperson, have been informed of the updates and are being supported by specialist officers.

Devon and Cornwall Police has received more than 120 reports of information after making a public appeal, and Longman asked anyone who had not yet come forward to do so "as a priority".

He reiterated calls asking people not to speculate, especially about a potential motive, saying this was "unhelpful" for the investigation and "distressing" to Widdecombe's relatives.

Longman said a "heightened" police presence would remain in the area over the coming weeks.

Chief Constable James Vaughan said Devon and Cornwall Police had "mounted an extraordinary response to a horrific murder of a very prominent public figure" and shown "British policing at its very best".

He said the investigation had been running at "lightning pace" over the past 48 hours, adding: "I am really pleased that we have a suspect firmly in custody."

Widdecombe served as the Conservative MP for Maidstone for 23 years, holding ministerial roles in John Major's government between 1994 and 1997.

Following her departure from the Commons in 2010, Widdecombe appeared on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing that year, and was a runner-up on Celebrity Big Brother eight years later.

She joined the Brexit Party in 2019 where she represented South West England as its MEP from 2019 to 2020.

There has been an outpouring of shock and grief from across the political divide following the news of her death.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to Widdecombe, describing her death as a "significant loss" as he called on people to "rise above" political differences.

"My heart is breaking for her family," said Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, describing Widdecombe as a "very fun and feisty woman".

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who visited Dartmoor to pay his respects to Widdecombe, described her as a "remarkable individual" and "the fiercest defender of free speech".

"She was an extraordinary lady," shadow chancellor Mel Stride, MP for Central Devon - Widdecombe's constituency - told BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme.

"I was always struck both by the fact she had real true conviction, strong personality, yet she had that twinkle in her eye, that enormous energy and that great sense of humour," he said, describing the combination as "quite rare" and "rather special".

Peter Horrell, her personal driver of 10 years, was among those who lay flowers outside her home.

He said Widdecombe had "never mentioned any fear" for her safety and loved living in the tiny village she had made her home. %!s()

Children are more likely to open up when they trust what happens when they do. The parents children continue turning to — at 7, 17 or even 27 — create space for difficult conversations.

Here are seven things they do with their kids starting at an early age.

1. They regulate themselves before trying to regulate their child

Kids are far more likely to open up when they aren't worried about how their parent will react.

The parents who know the most about their child's inner world have learned not to make their child's emotions feel like a problem to solve or a threat to manage.

Their children trust that they can bring hard things home.

2. They share who they are

Many parents expect openness from their children while revealing very little of themselves.

The parents whose children continue sharing their inner world don't hide behind the role of Mom or Dad. Their children know what excites them, what stresses them and what matters to them.

Children are more likely to share what's on their minds when they don't feel like they're the only ones being vulnerable.

3. They ask about feelings, not just performance

Most parents naturally ask about grades, sports, homework and accomplishments.

The parents whose kids continue opening up ask different questions, too:

• "What felt hard today?"
• "How did that go for you?"
• "What are you thinking about lately?"

These questions show children that their thoughts and feelings deserve as much attention as their accomplishments.

4. They don't make some emotions acceptable and others unacceptable

Most parents have no problem embracing excitement and gratitude. Anger, jealousy, sadness and disappointment are another story.

But children learn quickly which feelings are safe to share and which ones they need to hide. The parents who stay emotionally close to their children don't expect them to always be happy. They make room for the full range of human emotions.

When children learn certain feelings aren't welcome, they often stop sharing them.

5. They repair after hard moments

The parents I see with the closest relationships to their adult children know they aren't perfect. They apologize, revisit difficult moments and take responsibility.

They'll say things like:

• "I was too hard on you earlier."
• "You didn't deserve that."
• "Can we try that conversation again?"

Children need to know that relationships can withstand mistakes. Repair teaches them it's safe to come back after conflict.

6. They don't put their emotional needs on their child

I've worked with many kids who become overly focused on keeping the adults around them happy. They think carefully about when to bring things up, hide mistakes or avoid difficult conversations. This is simply because they don't want to upset them.

But the healthiest parent-child relationships free children from the responsibility of managing adult emotions.

Children are much more likely to open up when they know they won't have to take care of everyone else's feelings afterward.

7. They invite instead of interrogate

Parents often tell me, "I ask questions, but my child only gives me one-word answers."

Asking more questions usually isn't the answer. Children open up when they feel genuinely curious about their thoughts and experiences — not when they feel like they're being interviewed.

The parents who know the most about their children's lives create opportunities for conversation. They share stories about their own day, spend time together without an agenda, and make it easy for their children to talk when they're ready.

Those small moments help children see you as someone they can turn to, even when conversations get difficult.

Devon and Cornwall Police said late on Saturday that the suspect was arrested in South Yorkshire county in northern England, about 320km (200 miles) from her village, Haytor, in the southwest, where Widdecombe was found dead on Thursday.

Earlier, police released a 26-year-old man arrested on Friday a few miles from the scene of the attack, saying he was no longer under investigation. The force said detectives are working “at a significant pace” to find the killer, and they do not believe there is a risk to the public.

Widdecombe, 78, was found dead in her isolated rural home in Haytor on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Police did not disclose a cause of death, only saying she had sustained “serious injuries”.

Police said they believe Widdecombe was attacked at about 12:30pm on Wednesday. Concerns were raised for her after she failed to appear for a scheduled TV interview on Wednesday afternoon.

They said counterterrorism officers supported local police in carrying out Saturday’s arrest, but there is “no information to suggest that this is a terrorism-related incident”.

Security has been tightened for politicians after the murders of two serving members of parliament in the past decade. Labour lawmaker Jo Cox was shot and stabbed in 2016 by a far-right extremist, and Conservative David Amess was stabbed in 2021 by an attacker inspired by the ISIL (ISIS) group.

Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party to which Widdecombe belonged, said staff had searched party emails to check for patterns of abuse directed at her, but had found nothing.

Speaking after leaving a wreath of flowers outside Widdecombe’s home, Farage said “we can’t identify, from our data, any individual” who appeared to be targeting her.

The death sent a shockwave through British politics, where Widdecombe had been a prominent voice for decades, known for her robust personality and socially conservative views opposing abortion and the expansion of LGBTQ rights.

She was a lawmaker in the House of Commons from 1987 to 2010, serving in roles including prisons minister in Prime Minister John Major’s Conservative government in the 1990s.

Widdecombe found fame after leaving Parliament as a contestant on the reality television shows Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.

She later joined the Brexit Party, briefly serving as a member of the European Parliament before the United Kingdom left the European Union in 2020. Most recently, she joined the anti-immigration Reform UK, often appearing in the media as a spokesperson.

Friends and colleagues contrasted her pugnacious political statements with her personal kindness and good humour.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called her death “really shocking news”, and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said she “really struggled to find the words to say”.

“It was a nasty, horrific attack and my heart is breaking for her family,” Badenoch said. %!s()

Bavi is the strongest storm to hit China this year. It reached the coastal city of Yuhuan in Zhejiang province on Saturday just before midnight, followed by another landfall in the densely populated city in Yueqing in the district of Wenzhou.

“We could hear roof tiles and tree branches falling,” Yueqing resident Li Liangxing told the Reuters news agency, saying a walkway beside his compound had disappeared under water.

The storm, which is roughly the size of France, felled more than 1,300 trees in Yueqing with half of them being torn out from the root, state broadcaster CCTV reported. Floodwaters rose to about half the height of a car tyre. Emergency teams used chainsaws and excavators to clear waterlogged streets littered with fallen trees.

China’s National Meteorological Center reported winds of 101 kilometres per hour (63 miles per hour) early on Sunday. Forecasters have warned the storm is expected to unleash heavy rains on eastern and northern China over the coming days.

China’s eastern transport network of trains and flights has been heavily affected by the storm. Two major railway stations in Hangzhou, Zhejiang’s capital, suspended all services, while 327 flights were cancelled at the city’s Xiaoshan International Airport. Meanwhile in nearby Shanghai, 684 flights and more than 1,600 trains were cancelled, according to the state-backed outlet The Paper.

By Sunday afternoon, Bavi had crossed into Anhui province, northwest of Zhejiang, and was expected to move northeast to the Yellow Sea by Tuesday, the National Meteorological Center said. %!s()
