As of June 30, Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway indirectly owned about 0.04% of SpaceX, a stake worth over $800 million, according to Business Insider's calculations.

This "look-through stake" — a term coined by Buffett — is based on Berkshire owning part of Alphabet, which in turn owns part of SpaceX.

Berkshire reported a roughly 0.9% stake in Alphabet, worth about $38 billion, in its second-quarter portfolio update on Friday.

Alphabet revealed in its portfolio filing that it owned about 4%, or $94 billion worth, of SpaceX on June 30.

Berkshire's stake in Alphabet represents a proportional claim on Alphabet's assets, including its SpaceX holding.

Its piece of the $94 billion position was worth about $815 million at the end of June, but closer to $700 million at Tuesday's market close, following share-price declines for both Alphabet and SpaceX this quarter.

That's a tiny financial interest for Berkshire, which owned about $1.3 trillion of assets at the end of June, including $324 billion of stocks.

But Alphabet's stake in SpaceX is worth about $79 billion today, or roughly 2% of Alphabet's market value, making it a material asset for the search, advertising, and AI giant. Berkshire will be monitoring the holding closely, given how much money it has riding on Alphabet.

Buffett — who stepped down as CEO at the turn of this year, but remains Berkshire's chairman and largest shareholder — established the Alphabet stake during the third quarter of 2025. Less than 12 months later, on June 30, Berkshire counted Alphabet as its third-biggest stock holding after Apple and American Express.

Tesla, SpaceX, and Berkshire didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

'Maybe Buffett should invest in Tesla haha'

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been clamoring for Buffett's backing on X for years.

"He should take a position in Tesla. It's an obvious move," Musk posted in 2024.

"Too bad he didn't invest in Tesla when it was 0.1% of today's value lol," Musk wrote in 2023.

"Munger could've invested in Tesla at ~$200M valuation when I had lunch with him in late 2008," Musk said in another post that year, referring to Buffett's late business partner, Charlie Munger.

"Maybe Buffett should invest in Tesla haha," Musk tweeted in 2021.

Yet Buffett refrained from buying into Tesla, preferring to back the EV maker's Chinese rival, BYD, for about 17 years, from 2008 to 2025.

There's also no sign that Berkshire has directly invested in SpaceX, which had its blockbuster public-market debut in June.

Buffett's restraint isn't surprising, as he's a renowned bargain hunter known for investing in mature, predictable businesses that he understands deeply.

Tesla and SpaceX both trade at punchy valuations, and between them, they're racing to build everything from humanoid robots and self-driving cars to spaceships capable of transporting people to Mars.

Even with Buffett out and Greg Abel in as Berkshire CEO, a direct SpaceX bet looks unlikely anytime soon, as it would mark a huge departure from Buffett's school of investing.

Buffett and Musk go way back

Over the years, Musk has praised Buffett's work, recognized his expertise, and quoted him multiple times on Tesla earnings calls.

But he's also questioned some of Buffett's investing principles, and championed his own focus on building businesses and products, while dismissing Buffett's focus on studying companies and allocating capital as "super boring."

Buffett has also jabbed at Musk in the past. But he's also applauded him for Tesla's success and for taking on momentous challenges.

"It's a dedication to solving the impossible, and every now and then he'll do it," Buffett said about Musk during Berkshire's shareholder meeting in 2023. "But it would be torturous to me or Charlie."

Munger also hailed Musk's taste for difficulty, joking, "Warren and I are looking for the easy job."

Musk welcomed the pair's comments in an X post: "Appreciate the kind words from Warren & Charlie."

Betting on SpaceX

Berkshire's indirect bet on SpaceX doesn't carry the usual weight of Buffett's vote of confidence, given it's an unavoidable product of its Alphabet investment, and neither Buffett nor his team has publicly acknowledged the look-through stake.

But Musk's company was clearly an attractive play for Alphabet when it originally invested $900 million in 2015, and Alphabet was evidently a compelling wager for Berkshire given how quickly it has amassed a big stake in the business.

For now, assuming Alphabet and Berkshire haven't altered their stakes since the end of June, Musk can at least say Buffett is one of the biggest shareholders in one of his biggest shareholders.

The fact that the average price of a new car has surpassed the $50,000 mark in the United States is totally chill and not at all unreasonable, yet more and more folks are resorting to keeping their old car for longer or turning to the used car market instead of spending the money they so obviously have. Unfortunately for the latter camp who may turn to the used car market hoping to find cheaper cars, the average cost of used cars has also jumped to over $30,000 for the first time since 2023. Now, data from iseecars.com shows that the average price of three-year-old used cars has increased by over 38%, or $9,027 since 2019. Don't you just love life in late-stage capitalism?

For any fellow poor people who aren't in a place to spend more than $20,000 on a car, I feel you deeply, but I'm sorry to say only 11.4% of three-year-old used cars are below that budget. Things don't get much better if you expand your search to include five-year-old used cars; just 26.6% of five-year-old used cars are below the $20,000 mark. In 2019, nearly 70% of five-year-old used cars were listed below that price.

Almost every single three-year-old car got more expensive

Porsche

Luxury cars saw the largest used car price increases, but the prices of a lot of mundane cars have skyrocketed too. The Porsche Cayenne and 911 top the list of three-year-old cars with the largest price increases between 2019 and 2026, with the price of each jumping by about 75%. For example, in 2019, the average price of a used 2016 Cayenne was $50,301, but now the average price of a used 2023 Cayenne has ballooned up to $88,387.

On the more utilitarian end of the spectrum, three-year-old Hyundai Elantras, Kia Sportages, and Toyota Camrys have experienced the biggest price increase. Elantras are up the most at 56% pricier than they were in 2019, followed by Kia Sportages at a 50.5% price hike, and the Toyota Camry is close behind with a 49.9% increase in price. In 2019, the average price of a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra was $12,295, but now the average price of a used 2023 Elantra is up to $19,178. Even when accounting for inflation, $12,295 in 2019 would be the same as $16,310 in 2026, so prices have well outpaced inflation.

Two models got cheaper, but what does it all mean?

Tesla

Only two models decreased in price: the Tesla Model X and the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The average price of a used three-year-old Tesla Model X dropped way more than any other car, by a whopping 17%, from $75,554 in 2019 to $62,689 in 2026. The average price of a used three-year-old Discovery Sport only dropped 2.4%, but every other model included in the test got more expensive. Other cars on the list of the smallest price changes include the Mazda CX-9, Tesla Model S, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, Volvo XC90, and Nissan Murano.

Unfortunately for cash-strapped Americans looking for an affordable used car, this means they will have to expand their search to include older model years. Shopping for five-year-old used cars doesn't mean sacrificing modern comforts or safety anymore, at least, since there are plenty of affordable older models that experts recommend as smart choices for teen drivers or simply safety conscious consumers on a budget. %!s()

The game launched in advanced access earlier this week, and I've spotted a couple of broad trends among the 20,000-odd people who are already playing. Firstly, some of you early worms think developers Cold Symmetry have whacked up the difficulty since the beta playtest. Jeremy has already addressed this in our review comments, noting that certain endgame bosses are indeed tougher customers in the current build, but that the first few enemies you encounter don't appear too different. There's a balancing patch slated to release tomorrow 20th August – the day of the game's full public release.

Cold Symmetry have also just released a hotfix that sorts out various crash, stability and performance issues, including a UI lock-up when you equip the Slayer Seal – this last one seems pretty vital given that the Slayer Seal is effectively Mortal Shell 2's easy mode. Amongst other things, it allows you to deal Break damage with your projectile weapons. Fill up an enemy's Break bar (also filled by parrying, given the appropriate gear) and you'll leave them vulnerable to a gut-ripping riposte.

The ripostes have also needed a bit of fine-tuning. Today's hotfix addresses a specific problem where players would inadvertently "steal" the enemy's weapon during the move. A quick trawl through Reddit reveals several amusing threads of people trying to work out why they are suddenly equipped with absolutely epic halberds.

I have a similar relationship with vegetable graters, as it happens. For reasons that possibly speak to some complicated neurodivergence, picking up a vegetable grater immediately makes me forget that I am holding a vegetable grater. When cooking, I often spend many moments with grater in hand, searching cupboards for my grater in total bewilderment. But I digress. You did not come here to read about my inability to detect vegetable graters. You came here to read… my thoughts on possible future Mortal Shell 2 game modes or playstyles.

I think it would be fantastic if a Soulslike dared to give us a universal weapon steal mechanic, allowing people capable of nailing a three-frame parry window to just pirouette through every bossfight yelling "MINE NOW, MALENIA" or regional equivalent.

Spinning the idea out, I think being forced to use the weaponry of the foe you last defeated could make for an entertaining campaign modifier, and when I say "entertaining" I of course mean that it would make stomach acid shoot from your ears. As with Gun Game in Counter-Strike, you'd often have to make do with weapons that are absolutely the wrong choice for the situation, and I can imagine a demonstrable massive bastard like, say, Hidetaka Miyazaki weaving all sorts of vicious scenarios around the feature.

For example: you've got a big sturdy tower shield and you're trying to close the distance with a giant arbalest on the other side of a narrow walkway. Sounds easy enough... but while crossing the walkway you need to slay a bunch of screechweasels armed with teacups, and oh dear, now your tower shield is a teacup and whoops, now you're waking up at that bonfire from two hours ago. There's probably a Souls or Soulslike mod that does this already.

Flummoxed by Mortal Shell 2's splendour, given the first game's mixed showing? I was too. Honestly, I'm burned out on Soulsy games at large, but Jeremy's account of an experience that seemingly owes as much to id Software as From's work certainly hooks my fancy. Cyberleek has been vocal about the leak and has actually spelled out their motivations for doing it. In a statement, they said: “A digital copy cannot sell out. Yet publishers kept the preorder system and stripped away its only consumer benefit. Now gamers pay early and receive nothing in return except a countdown timer and a cosmetic skin."

This is in the wake of Take-Two announcing there would be no physical copies of GTA VI for consoles. Purchasing a box copy would contain nothing more than a code. The move is adjacent to Sony announcing it would produce no more physical games in 2028, but Rockstar’s move starts this year, which will net it a better return on its $80 game, on that will sell tens of millions of copies.

There may be alternative motivations here, as many of the releases contain watermarks promoting a specific cryptocurrency for purchase, suggesting the leaker is trying to get something out of this besides internet infamy.

Play Puzzles & Games on Forbes

Some are criticizing the footage for its quality; one clip shows Jason getting out of a car and beating to death a driver with a wrench, and the movement and visuals seem underwhelming to some. However, Cyberleek themselves have confirmed that the leaked footage is from 2023, and a whole lot of work has happened between now and this late-2026 release.

The leak has also produced new, previously unknown information like a fuel gauge on cars, and within the last few hours, a claim that GTA VI will feature a currency that can be traded for real-life money, similar to Roblox. Cyberleek promises more releases and screenshots are coming today. (Update: shortly after publication, another trove of leaks of gameplay footage, including a cutscene, have been uploaded).

The leaks hardly seem devastating to the game’s prospects, but it is sure to infuriate Rockstar, which has an extensive reveal of GTA VI gameplay and systems on Netflix and YouTube in just over a week. Everyone spreading and debating three-year-old clips with no context is certainly not what it wants to see.

There is an uneven history of leakers in all types of media getting caught or slipping away. One of the most famous cases is a man who uploaded an unfinished version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine online. He was eventually caught and sentenced to a year in federal prison.

The man, a trained scuba diver who prosecutors allege was directly involved in the explosions, was arrested in the Croatian seaside town of Pula on Wednesday. Berlin will seek his extradition to face trial at the federal court in Karlsruhe, in Germany.

The German prosecutor’s office said the suspect “belonged to a group of people, including the separately prosecuted Serhiy K, who planted explosives near the island of Bornholm in September 2022 on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.

“The accused participated in the necessary dives,” it added.

Prosecutors identified the suspect only as Vladimir Z, but he is understood to be the same man arrested by Poland last year – and released after a Polish court ruled against executing a European arrest warrant issued by Germany. He was identified in that court as Volodymyr Zhuravlev.

In a landmark ruling that caused friction in Polish-German relations, the Polish court argued that Germany had no jurisdiction in the case, and that the destruction of Nord Stream could be seen as a justified action by Ukraine as part of a defensive war.

The ruling aligned with Poland’s longstanding opposition to the pipeline project, seen as a symbol of Berlin’s close relations with Russia, with the Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, publicly saying that “the problem with Nord Stream 2 is not that it was blown up; the problem is that it was built”.

Polish and German media reported that the suspect had evaded arrest in Poland in 2024, fleeing back to Ukraine. Polish authorities blamed Germany for administrative errors when logging him into the international wanted database, which allowed him to cross the border despite an active arrest warrant.

The German magazine Der Spiegel alleged the suspect was helped to escape by a Ukrainian military attache stationed in Warsaw.

The man’s second arrest – this time in Croatia – highlights Berlin’s determination to bring him in front of German courts, despite awkwardness given Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and Germany’s longstanding help for Kyiv.

The other suspect, Serhiy K, was arrested in Italy last August and extradited to Germany in November, after unsuccessful appeals in Italian courts. %!s()
