The OLED Specifics

We've covered the history of this race before, but to sum up, it was Mexico's way of celebrating its portion of the highway that was supposed to take you from the Arctic Ocean to the tip of South America. (It remains incomplete today, mainly thanks to the dangerous Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia.) It brought the European style of open road racing to North America, complete with the same drivers, teams, and death tolls that accompanied it. The original race only lasted a few years until the 1955 Le Mans disaster plus several high-profile deaths of its own put an end to it.

The race returned in 1988, this time as a vintage stage rally, not flat-out runs on open roads like its predecessor. It's a little-known fact that Pink Floyd entered the race in 1991, while also creating a documentary with an original soundtrack. Nick Mason and co-driver Valentine Lindsay finished eighth overall, while David Gilmour crashed out, with his co-driver and band manager Steve O'Rourke suffering a broken leg. While safer than the original version, the modern Carrera Panamericana still has its fair share of mishaps. That version of the race still runs today.

A vintage racer twice over

This 1950 Ford Standard Sedan is old enough to have competed in the first Carrera Panamericana, which took place that same year. It sure looks the part, but instead competed in the 1995 running of the modern version. Bob Primmer and his son Rob drove it to a class win that year. It also competed in the 1998 running of the California Mille. That makes this car a vintage racer twice over. Its racing career in the 1990s happened almost as long ago from the present day as the original Carrera Panamericana took place from the modern remake.

The interior is the only place any modern (for the 1990s) upgrades are visible. The original speedometer has been replaced with a tachometer, which is really the only gauge the driver needs in front of him. A large custom-made central gauge cluster contains all the other gauges and switches the team needs, in clear view of both the driver and co-driver so that both can monitor them. A CB radio sits below this for local communications. An exposed fuse box sits in front of the co-driver, enabling him to diagnose and replace blown fuses on the fly without slowing down. A spare tire rides in the back seat, with another in the trunk along with a 22-gallon fuel cell.

Under the hood is the classic Ford flathead V8. Originally 239 cubic inches, renowned tuner Art Chrisman punched it out to 290. The auction listing says it makes nearly three times as much horsepower as the original engine. That's a bold claim, but Chrisman was known for building powerful engines for hot rods, drag racers, and Bonneville. There's no paperwork to back up the horsepower claim, but I'd consider it plausible. That power goes to the rear wheels through a Borg Warner T10 four-speed manual transmission, not original equipment, but the right tool for the job.

This vintage race car goes up for auction on Friday, August 14. If you're more of a Mopar fan, this 1954 Dodge Royal Club Coupe by the same team is up for sale, too. It never placed as well as the Ford, even though it ran three times (1999, 2001, and 2003). The Good

What actually changed in gameplay?

Defense has seen the biggest changes. While the pre-snap options are on both sides of the ball, it feels like defenses have gotten the most assistance. That's justified as Madden has been mostly an offensive game for years. The changes feel great, but take some time before you'll be able to truly lock them in your bag.

How much smarter are the linebackers?

I tested the linebackers' supposed increase IQ — especially as it pertains to sitting on the drag routes. It's not a joke. If you're leaning on it heavy in the first quarter. It feels like midway through the second quarter adjustments have been made. It's more challenging, but it's better for the overall game because it gives more life to your franchise mode journey and is less infuriating in head-to-head because your CPU-controlled players are smarter.

Did the pre-snap overhaul add depth or just steps?

The pre-snap options might actually be too complicated for some players. But that's OK. It will begin to represent a skill gap and it could be the difference between actually beating the CPU late in your franchise mode season on higher difficulty levels. That's a good thing, but again, it's not forced on you.

Is the Catch Meter worth turning on?

This is a mixed bag for me. I don't think you need it and Madden proves it's not entirely necessary to experience this year's game because you're asked if you want it on or off at the outset. Many fans have been playing the game for years and aren't necessarily into a radical change on such a huge mechanic like catching passes. That said, it does add a potential skill gap for serious competitive players.

The thing is, that's not the vast majority of the community — or any gaming community for that matter — regardless of what your favorite streamer or YouTuber says. I like that it is optional, but if you turn it on, it accomplishes that delicate balance any designer should shoot for: easy to understand, but difficult to master.

Is this the best version of franchise mode?

Yes, and it's not even close. We're finally at a place where the positives far outweigh anything that's considered a negative in franchise mode. The Persona Engine is such a major positive on the mode that it's tough to quantify how much of a soul this addition brings. Giving every player a personality totally brings the mode to life and there's even more that can be done on this front.

Also, the Weekly Recap and Halftime Shows have received a much-needed boost from last year's inaugural look. I loved what I saw and this too can be built out even more. What's most important is that there are undeniable strong steps and franchise mode is finally in a strong place.

There are some bugs at launch, but it would be silly to ding the game on things that we know will be addressed within the first patch or two.

How do contract negotiations and Free Agent Frenzy hold up?

The concepts are there. There is some tuning necessary, much of which has been addressed in the first patch, which I covered earlier. Overall, the free agent period feels as fun as any offseason mechanic in sports video games.

The Bad

Is CPU Wear and Tear management a problem?

The one issue that is bothering me at or just before launch is the CPU's Wear and Tear management. As of the publishing of this review, CPU teams are allowing guys to simply smoke themselves rather than properly substituting. I don't anticipate this will last long and I doubt it is an update that will require you to restart your franchise mode.

Is the draft presentation substance or decoration?

The NFL Draft presentation is only mildly improved. With what we're seeing from Weekly Recap and Halftime Show, it would be nice to see better presentation with the NFL Draft. You'll be hard-pressed to see many notable updates here. It's functional and not as buggy as past years, but underwhelming when compared to other aspects of franchise. That said, in an annual cycle, there's only so much that can get heavy work. With what we see with the Persona Engine this year, perhaps Madden 28 will see more work done with the NFL Draft.

Where does Superstar mode stand?

I'm not a huge Superstar mode player, but the G.O.A.T tracker gives me some reason to have interest. I can't say that it will convert me, but it supplies purpose and goals which is something the mode needed more than anything else. I'd still like to see more here that connects you to the player on and off the field. Left behind is probably too harsh. The G.O.A.T tracker does some work, but if it is compared to Franchise or Ultimate Team, yes, it is behind.

The Bottom Line

Who is this year's version for?

This year's version is for long-suffering franchise mode fans who have wanted customization and functionality. Madden 27 is still missing the ability to import draft classes from college — which is an issue that dings both games. It also still sucks that legends stay locked in Ultimate Team. That's my biggest gripe against the game because that's not about NIL technicalities. That comes from a flawed thought process. Still, I'd be lying if I said franchise mode fans won't be thrilled with this year's game.

Is it worth the upgrade from Madden 26?

This is 100% worth the upgrade — especially if you want the best franchise mode experience. If you want deeper gameplay, this will also check that box for you as well.

What does EA have to fix next?

Wear and Tear and franchise mode bugs should be the primary target. Again, nothing is really broken that can't be fixed. The draft class imports and the emancipation of legends are a battle for another year.

Colombia’s Foreign Ministry made the announcement on Monday, joining the United States as the only other country to recognise Israel’s annexation of the territory in 1981.

“The Government of Colombia recognises Israeli sovereignty over this territory, as well as that State’s right to protect itself against external threats,” read a statement published on X.

“Colombia recognises that maintaining Israel’s control and sovereignty over the Golan Heights is an essential component of its national defence,” it added.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar thanked his “good friend” de la Espriella for the “historic” recognition.

He said the pair had agreed on the move in the Colombian city of Barranquilla a day before de la Espriella’s inauguration.

Israel captured most of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War, before illegally annexing the territory in 1981. The move was rejected by most of the international community, although the US formally recognised Israel’s claim in 2019 during President Donald Trump’s first term in office.

The United Nations recognises the region as a part of Syria, and last month, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated that stance, describing Israeli occupation as “totally unacceptable”.

Syria tried to regain the Golan in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, but was thwarted and the two countries signed an armistice in 1974.

Colombia’s recognition of the Israeli claim comes as Israel expands its military footprint in Syria following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024. Israel has moved troops into a UN-monitored buffer zone and seized strategic territories, including the Syrian side of Jabal al-Sheikh (Mount Hermon), which overlooks the capital, Damascus.

De La Espriella, the new Colombian president, ran a bombastic campaign during which he promised close relations with the US and Israel as a way to combat armed groups in his country.

The US-backed millionaire has promised to restore Bogota’s ties with Israel after his predecessor, Gustavo Petro, criticised Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, severed diplomatic relations and halted Israeli arms imports.

De La Espriella has also cancelled Petro’s plans to open an embassy in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. %!s()

Well, the good news is that becoming a DoorDash driver doesn't look that difficult. In most states, you have to be at least 18, but 21 in California, and 19 in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia. You also have to own a non-jailbroken Android or iPhone. If you want to drive rather than pedal your deliveries — which is also an option, depending on where you'll work — you need a valid driver's license and valid personal auto insurance. As for what it pays, that depends on where you live. In Phoenix, according to Indeed, that's a decent $27.22 per hour – 43% over the national average, which is just $16.24 an hour.

Let's say you happen to live in Seattle and want to drive for DoorDash there. And, yeah, we know that John Oliver already warned that these apps are bad for everyone, but you need the job. The good news is that Seattle has a very high minimum wage of $21.30, and the city added a floor in the form of fees for delivery workers. Yes, that's led to some delivery backlash in Seattle, and some restaurants cannot afford to subscribe to app services, but according to Indeed, the average DoorDash driver in Seattle still makes about $20.89 an hour across their entire shift.

In New York, which also has a high minimum wage of $21.44 an hour, Indeed says the average Dasher will make about $25 per hour. The issue, however, is that both Seattle and New York are very expensive places to live. The site Payscale, which studies salaries, shows Seattle is 45% more expensive than the national average. But it could be worse: New York City is 139% pricier than the rest of the nation. You could Dash in Nashville, instead, where you're at just 2% higher than the national average cost of living — but you'll earn merely 13 bucks an hour there, according to Indeed.

The service, Workstream, which provides backend payroll support and software to restaurants, notes that the minimum wage in Nashville of just $7.25 hasn't budged since 2009 while a living wage in the city is $15.50. For comparison, you'd also struggle with that DoorDash rate of $21 an hour in Seattle, where Workstream says you need at least $26.59 per hour to make ends meet.

DoorDash jobs are not safe, either

We doubt you clicked on this story because you're thrilled by the idea of delivering slowly softening french fries to gamers too busy to put down their consoles to feed themselves. Indeed's Hiring Lab data shows exactly what you'd expect about the motivation behind the rise in gig work and everyone's curiosity about driving to make some extra cash. First, gig work is more flexible than other part-time positions, so you can squeeze in a few extra hours when your regular post lets you off. Hiring Lab shows that the number of people who listed a gig platform as an employer has risen from just .5% in 2018 to 1.3% in 2025. That doesn't sound like much, but it's a 260% increase and means that employers like Uber and DoorDash are coming to dominate the gig economy. Hiring Lab also says what you already know: Gig work is necessary because standard salaries aren't keeping pace with inflation.

Separately, a 2025 Goldman Sachs analysis found that gig work is increasingly necessary to make up for lost hours or weaker compensation, and a fifth of gig workers take on the extra hours because they were laid off or took a pay cut in their primary jobs. And, as you'd also guess, fully half of gig workers drive to scratch out more cash on top of their current 9-to-5s. But there's peril afoot for these side hustles — and we don't mean the risk of getting shot while engaged in a delivery. DoorDash is a major investor in Rivian's e-bike and drone spin-off, called Also, and you've surely seen drone food scooters in cities like Los Angeles already. Which means, as predicted, the end could be nigh for these jobs, too because: robots. %!s()
