Researchers are using extraordinarily detailed computer simulations to reconstruct one of the most transformative periods in cosmic history: the era when the first stars and galaxies began to emerge.

The work is part of the MEGATRON project, led by researchers at the University of Bath in the UK with collaborators at the University of Chicago in the US and the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris in France. The project is designed to explore how the earliest stars and galaxies illuminated a previously dark Universe and began producing and dispersing the chemical elements that later became essential ingredients of planets, life, and the world around us.

In some circles, "GTO" is synonymous with big V8 power. When that GTO badge first landed, it wasn't to designate a model, but rather an option package. And even so, one of the non-negotiable performance-focused upgrades that came with the GTO package was the 389 V8 we're going to cover in a moment. This is a car that has been in and out of the mix for much of muscle-car history, and the story of the GTO's powerplants often mirrors the story of the American auto industry through those many years. You got the mid-'60s excitement with the name's debut, Malaise Era frustration with the comparatively tepid 350, and the LS1 and LS2's return to form, which would turn out to be among the last gasps of Pontiac itself.

Mitochondria are often described as the powerhouses of the cell because they produce much of the energy our bodies need to grow, move, repair tissues, and carry out everyday functions. But they do not operate at a constant pace. Instead, mitochondria continuously adjust their activity depending on how much energy a cell needs and which nutrients are available.

Doreen Sayegh’s Cranford Theater, the last indie and family-run cinema in Union County, New Jersey, is about to turn 100.

Sayegh, who owns the five-screen cinema in Cranford, near to New York City, will mark the centennial with a throwback screening of Padlocked, the silent film that opened the theater’s doors on November 29, 1926, with an accompanying organ player.
