Now that Lanterns has ended, the question lingers: "What's next?" While Pierre is slated to return as John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow next year, some fans might want to watch a series to fill that post-Lanterns void on Sundays. Those fans are in luck, as there are plenty of series that manage to feature sci-fi tropes and elements alongside a compelling mystery or two. Here are five that make for the perfect binge-watch.

1

Watchmen

Image: HBO

Streaming on: HBO Max

Lanterns isn't the first time that Damon Lindelof has brought an iconic DC Comics series to life. In 2019, Lindelof served as the showrunner on Watchmen, an HBO series based on the legendary graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. What makes Watchmen stand out is that it's fundamentally a sequel to the original comic, building on a world that was changed by the actions of Ozymandias (Jeremy Irons). Police officers are required to wear costumes after an attack by the Seventh Kalvary, a white supremacist group, made it necessary. One of these officers, Angela Abar (Regina King) — or "Sister Night", as she's known in costume — uncovers a mystery that ties to her family and one of Watchmen's key characters.

Much like Lanterns, Watchmen was met with mixed reception when it was first announced. Alan Moore's displeasure with adaptations of his work was well known at this point, and most fans asked why they should tune in when there was already a movie adaptation. However, Watchmen won over critics thanks to the way that it built on the original comic's events, while also weaving real history into its storytelling. It also weaves sci-fi elements into its narrative thanks to the presence of Doctor Manhattan, while still staying grounded. Fans looking for something that's similar to Lanterns definitely need to give Watchmen a look.

2

Andor

Streaming on: Disney+

What makes Lanterns stand out from other superhero TV shows is that while it's part of DC Studios' creative slate, it feels tonally different from projects like Superman and Peacemaker. It's proof that a creator can enter a long-standing franchise and put their own creative stamp on it, and if fans are looking for a series that follows in the same spirit, they need to check out Andor. Taking place before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Andor follows Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as he gets swept up in the growing Rebellion. Cassian's growth from thief to revolutionary drives the story, as does the machinations of Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgard) and the struggles of Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly).

In the same way that Lanterns stands apart from the rest of DC Studios' work, Andor stands out from other Star Wars projects because it takes a hard look at the costs of rebellion. Cassian's journey sees him losing his mother and the love of his life, Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona); he's also imprisoned for months in an Imperial prison. Likewise, he bears witness to a horrifying genocide on the planet Ghorman as the Empire strips it for material for the Death Star. This approach, which comes courtesy of showrunnner Tony Gilroy, adds more depth to Rogue One and the Star Wars universe as a whole. It also shows that you can do so much more with Star Wars as a brand, which is a lesson more streamers should take with their established franchises.

3

Heroes

Image: NBCUniversal

Streaming on: Netflix, Tubi

Believe it or not, there was a time when Marvel and DC characters weren't dominating movie and television screens. True, there were shows like Smallville, but it appealed more to hardcore fans than new viewers. Things changed when Heroes made its debut in 2006 and took the world by storm. Heroes is unique in that while its characters did possess superhuman powers like being able to fly and stop time, they were normal people. Yet they start banding together to save the world from an impending apocalypse, leading to the now-iconic tagline: "Save the cheerleader, save the world."

Heroes did have a lengthy run of four seasons, but most fans agree that Season 1 is the zenith. It's when the show was firing on all cylinders, as its cast was full of future stars, including Zachary Quinto, and it managed to translate the larger-than-life elements that filled comic books to the small screen. Demand for fan-favorite characters derailed creator Tim Kring's plans to make Heroes into an anthology show, and the 2007 writers' strike cut Season 2 short. By the time Heroes returned, it was a shadow of its former self, but it was the first series to find humanity in superhumanity.

4

Fringe

Image: Fox

Streaming on: Pluto TV, Hulu, Prime Video

Anyone looking for sci-fi elements and a partnership like Lanterns should give Fringe a try. Fringe chronicles the journey of the Fringe Division, a secretive arm of the FBI that investigates cases related to a parallel universe. The Fringe Division consists of FBI Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble), and Walter's son Peter (Joshua Jackson). As the series progresses, Fringe slowly ramps up its sci-fi elements, leading to some truly shocking reveals. None of them top the Season 1 finale "There's More Than One of Everything", which has one of the best final shots in TV history.

Long before multiverse stories were all the rage, Fringe tackled this concept head-on, and used it to explore questions of identity while also raising the series' stakes. The end result was the X-Files successor Fox had been looking for, and one of the rare sci-fi series that the network didn't cut down in its prime. Much like Heroes, Fringe also led to bigger things for its creators J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman; the trio would reboot Star Trek for the silver screen, which reunited them with Leonard Nimoy.

5

Westworld

John P. Johnson/HBO

Episodes available to purchase on Apple TV and YouTube

A decade ago, HBO launched its most ambitious attempt at a sci-fi series with Westworld. Inspired by the Michael Crichton movie of the same name, Westworld takes place in the far future, where the Delos Corporation has created a Western-themed amusement park full of lifelike androids that are willing to satisfy a wide range of appetites. Anyone who's watched The Terminator or any sci-fi story centering on artificial intelligence knows what happens next: the androids start to gain free will and eventually turn on humanity. What makes Westworld stand out from the pack is that it's built on a series of mysteries, including a "maze" within the park and the revelation that sentient "hosts" already exist.

Westworld was billed by many critics and fans as a worthy successor to Game of Thrones, though ironically, it wound up mirroring Heroes. After two stellar seasons, fans left in droves following Season 3, and Season 4 came and went with a whisper. On top of that, Westworld was one of the series that was axed in the "Great Purge" of HBO Max's library in 2022, meaning that fans will have to track down episodes digitally or buy the DVDs. Still, it helped pave the way for thought-provoking sci-fi, including Lanterns. %!s()

WHY

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition and historically one of the least-funded genetic conditions by the federal government. GLOBAL is the largest U.S. nonprofit working to significantly improve health outcomes and elongate the lives of people with Down syndrome through Research, Medical Care, Education and Advocacy.

GLOBAL’s advocacy has helped drive a dramatic increase in federal Down syndrome research funding, from $18 million in 2009 to more than $140 million today. In 2018, GLOBAL’s bipartisan advocacy helped establish the NIH INCLUDE Project, launching a new era of Down syndrome research. More than $523 million has been invested in INCLUDE-related research over the past eight years.

GLOBAL is now leading bipartisan efforts around the DeOndra Dixon INCLUDE Project Act, named in honor of beloved GLOBAL Ambassador DeOndra Dixon. The legislation would formally authorize the NIH INCLUDE Project and ensure continued federal investment in Down syndrome research.

The Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show is a major driver of this work, supporting research at the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome and the CU Alzheimer’s & Cognition Center, as well as comprehensive medical care at the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children’s Hospital Colorado and the GLOBAL Adult Clinic at Denver Health.

HOW TO SUPPORT

Tickets and Table Sponsorships are available online. Supporters can also Sponsor a Model or Donate to support GLOBAL’s life-changing research and medical care.

The manager who had removed Macdonald without explanation, ABC director of audio Ben Latimer, announced her return on Wednesday to take on the afternoons slot.

“We’ve heard just how much 702 ABC Sydney listeners have missed Sarah, and I’m delighted she has agreed to return” Latimer said.

“There’s something special about Sarah taking on Afternoons. She knew James well, she knows the audience, and she understands what the program means to them. I’m really looking forward to hearing her make Afternoons her own.”

The popular ABC Sydney mornings presenter was sacked in November 2024, sparking an outcry from fellow presenters and listeners.

Macdonald announced her departure on air, telling listeners in 2024: “Well, here’s the news from me in terms of disappointment. Listen, I’m not going to be on the radio with you next year, the ABC has decided not to renew my contract here at Mornings.

“I am proud of what I’ve done. The ratings are up. I’ve broken lots of stories. Had the first interview with the new governor general. I got the premier of New South Wales to regularly take your calls. Led the election coverage, led the move to our Parramatta studios.”

Valentine, a broadcaster and saxophonist, died in April, three months after retiring from 25 years of hosting Sydney’s Afternoons program.

Macdonald confirmed she received a text from ABC managing director, Hugh Marks, on April Fool’s Day asking for a meeting.

“I have missed the ABC listeners’ wit and wisdom,” Macdonald said. “I thank them for their support, and I look forward to hanging out again. I will do my best to inform, entertain and be with listeners as we together try to make sense of the big and the small issues in life.”

The move also adds one woman to the ABC’s all male line-up from Breakfast through to Drive in 2026 after Chris Bath was replaced with a male presenter, Thomas Oriti.

At the time of her axing, then Media Watch host Paul Barry said on X: “I can’t believe this. I’m hearing that #ABC has dumped Sarah MacDonald from ABC Sydney. IMHO she’s brilliant, one of the best things on radio. WTAF?”

Outgoing drive presenter Richard Glover expressed the shock ABC staff felt on his show.

“The news today that the management here had decided not to renew [Sarah’s] contract has left our little family here, well, shell-shocked is the only word really. We were all just so taken aback, shocked, surprised, amazed, aghast, you know, choose any word you like, really.” %!s()

Hours after Skydance chairman and CEO David Ellison and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz sent a memo to employees at the combined company outlining their operating philosophy and goals for the new company, Cheeks sent his own email to TV staffers across studios and networks.

That note started didn’t spell out a structure just yet, but it’s understood that divisional bosses who will report to him include Warner Bros. TV Group and U.S. networks chairman/CEO Channing Dungey, CBS Studios president David Stapf and Paramount TV Studios topper Matt Thunell. Alongside Cheeks, JB Perrette (previously WBD’s CEO/president of global streaming and games) serves as co-chair of Skydance TV, as well as chief business officer. Perrette additional holds those roles for the Skydance DTC streaming division.

“The work ahead is significant, and so is the opportunity,” he said in the note. “I am energized by the possibilities. Together, we’ll build on our collective strengths to create an even stronger future.”

Cheeks’ ascension at Skydance was a huge vote of confidence from Ellison, who had previously tapped the exec to serve as Paramount TV media chair last year when Skydance first took control of Paramount. Prior to that, Cheeks was one of the three co-CEOs of Paramount Global (previously known as ViacomCBS) — and was the only one of that triumvirate to make the transition to the new company.

Here’s his note:

Team,

Today is the start of a new chapter. By bringing together Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, we’ve assembled a remarkable collection of television brands, networks and studios, backed by some of the most talented teams in the industry.

I want to acknowledge the hard work, creativity and dedication you each bring to this historic moment. Thank you for playing through the noise this past year. I am excited to move forward together and shape our future as one team.

Our Skydance Television group

1. Our three television studios — Warner Bros. Television Studios, CBS Studios and Paramount Television Studios — will continue to create franchises, premium originals and unscripted hits that entertain viewers of all ages and interests and power our platforms and partners around the globe.
2. CBS remains a cornerstone, underpinning our multiplatform strategy to deliver entertainment, news and sports to audiences at scale.
3. CBS Sports, TNT Sports and Warner Bros. Discovery Sports together form an enviable and expansive global sports portfolio.
4. CBS News is one of the most important brands in journalism, delivering national and worldwide news across broadcast, streaming and digital. At the local level, our 27 CBS stations serve 17 markets with best-in-class community journalism.
5. Our cable portfolio features more than 50 channels globally, connecting viewers with culture-defining entertainment, kids and family programming and leading lifestyle brands.

There are too many standout shows to name individually, but one thing is clear: the breadth and quality of programming across this group is unrivaled, spanning some of the most watched, most acclaimed and most award-winning in the industry.

Our team
This next chapter will be defined by the strength of our people. I know you’re eager to hear more about leadership, structure and strategy. More details will be shared as soon as we can.

What happens next
This is a moment of transition. With that comes uncertainty. The stress of this is not lost on me. Expect to hear more on our structure and priorities in the weeks ahead. Please continue to reference our Integration Hub.

The work ahead is significant, and so is the opportunity. I am energized by the possibilities. Together, we’ll build on our collective strengths to create an even stronger future.

Thank you for everything you do.

More to come.
