“I was raised to share one’s struggles if, in doing so, that might help others,” he recently told People. Reeve was diagnosed in the spring, but as of a Sept. 8 check-up, he is now cancer-free.

“Watching my parents up close take the adversity they faced in their lives and repurpose it into something hopeful left a major impact on my life and how I try to live it,” the anchor said, which inspired him to share his health story publicly.

Will was two years old when his father, Christopher, was paralyzed from the neck down after being thrown from a horse in 1995. Nearly a decade later, Christopher died in 2004 at the age of 52, and his mother, Dana Reeve, died in 2006 at age 44 from lung cancer.

He acknowledged that he’s “had a lot happen in my life. But none of it until now had happened to me in a way.” Reeve initially found a tender lump on one of his testicles in the shower in April. While he “assumed it was nothing or would go away,” it was his wife, Amanda Dubin Reeve, who urged him to get an ultrasound.

The following month, the GMA anchor underwent an orchiectomy to remove the cancerous testicle, which is a standard surgical procedure when someone is diagnosed with testicular cancer.

“I was more nervous about the unknown of the surgery rather than the overwhelming realization that I would be losing an essential part of my body forever,” he admitted to People.

Further testing revealed that the cancer spread to the lymph nodes in his abdomen, leading him to undergo a six-hour surgery in June to remove them and then two rounds of chemotherapy that concluded at the end of July.

“The irony is not lost on me that 20 years after my mom died of lung cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering, there I was in the same building getting treated for cancer,” Reeve shared, also praising Amanda for taking on “the role of wife and caregiver” during this difficult time, similar to how his mom cared for his dad.

After Reeve was declared cancer-free earlier this month, he’ll now have scans and bloodwork three to four times a year to monitor for any chance of cancer returning.

“My colleagues at ABC are like family to me and have been with me every step of the way,” he added. “I’m fortunate that I caught this early. Yes, I had to jump through some flaming hoops to get to the other side, but it could have been much worse had I ignored it or delayed going to the doctor.” %!s()

These are just two of the exhibits playing starring roles in a rather extraordinary contemporary art show called Living Labyrinths, at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) in Exeter, aiming to celebrate the “cultural world” of fungi.

Lara Goodband, the head curator at the RAMM, said it had been five years in the making. She suggested the south-west England was a good place to focus on fungi.

“We have great weather for it, warm and damp,” Goodband said. “But also, I think people here have a special affinity for fungi.”

She said a wide range of people in the south-west were fungi fans, from the ecologists who study the role they play in soil health to the ravers who enjoy the hallucinogenic properties of some mushrooms and the storytellers who work with the fairytale associations of toadstools.

RAMM is also an excellent place for this deep dive because of its Victorian collections of fungi. Specimens of stinkhorn and bird’s nest fungi appear alongside the modern pieces.

Goodband said interest in fungi had risen sharply over the past few years, partly after the success of Merlin Sheldrake’s book Entangled Life, which argued fungi provided a key understanding to the planet. “I think we’ve hit a moment,” said Goodband.

Among the highlights is a sound installation by the musician, composer and DJ Jason Singh, who spent hours hunkered down in two Devon woods, Fingle and Yarner, for his piece, The Intelligence Below.

He said he used biofeedback sensors to measure the electricity coming from mycelium – the rootlike networks of fungi – and translated these into sound.

Singh said: “So all the notes that you are hearing are translations of voltage being emitted from the living thing. This is music being generated by the living system of the mushroom.

“I’m interested in this idea that all living things generate and vibrate. This is a way for us to try to tune into and connect with other living things.”

Singh said he did get some odd looks from passersby when he was out in the woods collaborating with fungi. “But it’s magical being in a space recording mushrooms.”

Visitors to the exhibition will also be able to see watercolour studies by Beatrix Potter loaned by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Her work was overlooked in her lifetime but is recognised by modern mycologists.

Near them is a recent work called In Balance by the artist Jo Pearl based on a fungus called Potteromyces asteroxylicola, named after Potter in 2023 when it was identified in the collections of the Natural History Museum.

Another new piece is by Gemma Anderson-Tempini, who worked with scientists from the University of Exeter’s MRC Centre for Medical Mycology to create a map of her own mycobiome, the fungi dwelling within the human body.

Like Singh, Anderson-Tempini ventured out into the Devon landscape to gather material for her piece, Myco-Mother, 2026.

She collected pieces of red sandstone from Exmouth and chocolate-brown soil from Killerton, which she ground up to create the watercolours she used.

Anderson-Tempini believes her work is a first. “Every one of us is carrying a fungal ecology and until now nobody had drawn it,” she said. “Fungi is fashionable but Sheldrake and the rest stayed outside the body in forests and soil. This work turns it inward.”

Staffing gaps at Sydney airport are being investigated as a key factor in four incidents in July and August this year, according to the investigating authority, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau [ATSB].

Angus Mitchell, the ATSB chief commissioner, released preliminary investigation reports on Wednesday that confirmed staffing levels had “emerged as a recurring area of enquiry”.

Air Services Australia, which operates the tower, had predicted fatigue risks for staff at the time of the incidents as part of roster modelling processes.

While fatigue risk does not necessarily mean individual air traffic controllers are tired at the time of an incident, the effectiveness of measures to manage any risk is being queried.

Investigators will consider whether staff combining operational roles contributed to the incidents, along with routine reliance on overtime to fill shifts and training and supervision being conducted alongside normal duties.

“Nationally, over the decade, reported ground confliction [incident] rates have remained broadly steady,” Mitchell said.

“However, Sydney recorded the highest confliction rate per aircraft movement post-Covid among the major airports, about 20% above the national average.

“This should be viewed in the context of Sydney airport being the most complex in the country.”

The four incidents include a near miss on 27 July, when a Qantas Boeing 737 was cleared by controllers to cross in front of a Qantaslink Dash 8.

The two aircraft came within 120m of each other at the same time as a controller completed a handover to a colleague in order to take a rest break. The report said the break was required to manage the controller’s predicted fatigue risk level, “which was high for their shift”.

The incident was given the most serious safety classification, only the third time the rating has been used since Australian records began.

On 9 August, a Jetstar A320 braked abruptly to avoid colliding with a Qatar Boeing 777 which was being towed. A flight attendant onboard the Jetstar plane fell and fractured her wrist.

On the same day, a Qantas Boeing 737 was cleared to cross a runway in front of a Virgin 737 that had been cleared for takeoff.

On 18 August, a Qantas A321 had to brake when a Qantas Boeing 737 passed in front of it.

Mitchell said in Sydney, ground incidents attributed to air traffic control actions had increased since the Covid period.

“Sydney has also recorded twice the annual average number of information and procedural errors compared to other airports,” he said.

“Higher-consequence incidents, including runway incursions, taxiway near-collisions and losses of separation attributed to [air traffic control] have also increased at Sydney post-Covid, driven partly by the July and August peak.”

The transport minister, Catherine King, said she expected Airservices Australia to cooperate fully with the investigations and fix any problems.

She announced the creation of a new independent assurance panel for Sydney air traffic control.

The regulator, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority [CASA], said it believed none of the incidents presented an “immediate safety risk” and air travel was safe in Australia.

A spokesperson said Airservices Australia would review the interim reports and completed investigations.

“The aviation safety system is designed to manage operational risks through multiple safeguards and, based on the information currently available, the recent occurrences do not indicate an immediate safety risk to the travelling public.”

Final reports from the investigations are expected in 2027.

Last month Guardian Australia revealed Sydney air traffic controllers had warned safety regulators of “grave concerns” about changes to airspace rules, likening the situation to the months leading up to a crash in Washington DC in which 67 people died. %!s()

South Korea said on Tuesday that the blasts, which happened on South Korea's side of the DMZ, were "highly likely" from North Korean mines. It vowed to take "corresponding measures" for what it said was a violation of a decades-old armistice.

North Korea has denied responsibility for the blasts, calling Seoul's claims "groundless" and a "farce" to escalate tensions on the peninsula.

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accused South Korea of "cooking up" the claims for "political and military provocation".

Kim denied suggestions that North Korean had crossed the border to plant the mines, calling it "a deliberate and planned strained assertion to shift the responsibility for escalating tension" to North Korea.

Her statement, published in state media on Wednesday, also warned the South to be "prepared for paying price for the farce of their own making."

South Korea says the mines are believed to have been laid by Pyongyang to fortify its border. In a statement on Wednesday, it called for North Korea to apologise for the blast and put an immediate stop to such fortification activities along the border.

South Korean Defence Minister Kang Shin-chul previously said on Tuesday that the blasts were a "clear" violation of the 1953 armistice, which halted active combat in the Korean War.

That armistice resulted in the creation of the 4km-wide (2.5mi) DMZ, a buffer strip containing the Military Demarcation Line which marks the land border between the two Koreas.

In the decades since, sporadic clashes and mine explosions have broken out in the DMZ.

In 2015, two South Korean soldiers were maimed by landmines while patrolling the area. South Korea said the mines had been secretly planted by North Korean soldiers near a South Korean guard post - a claim that Pyongyang denied.

Kim referenced that 2015 incident in her statement on Wednesday, claiming South Korea had used that as a "pretext" to escalate tensions, and were doing the same thing now.

Ties between Pyongyang and Seoul have only deteriorated since 2015, raising the risk of friction when such incidents happen.

Christopher Green, a senior consultant with Crisis Group, tells the BBC that "The North Koreans have been wilfully attempting to harden the border [and] eliminate inter-Korean relations".

As a result, he adds, the two Koreas no longer have the "same low-level communication" that they shared in 2015.

"Accidental escalation on the Korean Peninsula is always just a few steps away, and it's fewer steps now than it was in 2015," he says.

The United Nations Command, which conducted the on-site investigations into the blasts with the South Korean military, said it would handle the violation of the 1953 armistice "through established Armistice mechanisms".

"UNC remains committed to maintaining and enforcing the Armistice Agreement and fulfilling its responsibilities to preserve stability and prevent escalation on the Korean Peninsula," it said. %!s()

This treacherous drive through the Nanling Mountain Range in Hunan, China is like threading a needle in a wind storm. This trucker is deftly maneuvering an 80-tonne, 172 feet long windmill blade up the 1,312-foot high Baoding Mountain.

It takes a certain level of concentration and  mad skill to navigate some of the world's most remote windy, narrow mountain roads. Lose focus and you could find yourself driving over a several-story drop beyond the non-existent guardrails. This truck driver is definitely a contender for having one of the most stressful jobs in the world. Now you may be wondering, how can a truck even carry something like that? 

Slow, tall and steady

To successfully transport something as large as this wind turbine blade, special trucks or trailers are made to the object's specifications. According to YouTube's Trucker Culture, these trailers and haulers are equipped with a special blade lifter system. The root of the blade is mounted to the frame on the carrier, which is equipped with hydraulic lifters. Those lifters are key to helping the little truck that could to navigate narrow roads and paths, as well as get around homes, forests, power lines, bridges and really anything that could be in the way. 

The hydraulic lifter can raise the blade upwards of 60 degrees, although in some videos it may look as though some can get close to 90 degrees. This comes especially handy on small turns and hairpins on mountains as the blade can be lifted and help lessen the footprint the truck makes, otherwise one risks the truck and blade hanging off the end of the mountain. No thank you.

The vehicles seen in the video escorting the semi carrying the wind turbine blade are there to not only survey and remove obstacles, but to help guide the truck around precarious situations. Sometimes this is done via radio communications, likely when slight, precise movements are required where the blade or truck have just a few feet of clearance.

Weather can also up a transport's precarious threat level. Wind turbine blades are designed to catch wind, unfortunately even while on the back of a truck. Awind gust, on the top of a mountain like the one in the earlier video is not a good day for anyone. Mother Nature will bring the whole caravan to a standstill until conditions clear, otherwise suffer the wrath and one can find an unintentional but likely faster route back down a mountain. %!s()
