Crying doesn’t just affect the eyes. It almost always affects the nose too — congestion, a drip, sometimes real mucus. This isn’t a separate reaction to being upset. It’s a direct consequence of anatomy: the eye’s drainage system empties straight into the nasal cavity, so when tear production increases, the nose is downstream of it, literally.

That single fact explains most of what people call “ugly crying.” It isn’t a more intense or less composed form of sadness. It’s what happens when a drainage system built for a slow, steady trickle suddenly has to handle much more fluid than usual.

The Eye Has A Drain, And It Empties Into Your Nose When You Cry

Tears aren’t just wiped away or evaporated. Each eye has a dedicated drainage system that anatomists call the lacrimal apparatus. Tears exit through two tiny openings at the inner corner of each eyelid, called puncta, then travel through small channels into a short reservoir called the lacrimal sac, and finally down a passage called the nasolacrimal duct, which empties directly into the nasal cavity, as a 2025 review published in Cureus lays out in detail.

Crying changes the volume, not the plumbing. Biologists and ophthalmologists generally group tears into three categories: basal tears (the constant background lubrication), reflex tears (the flood triggered by irritants like onion vapor or smoke) and emotional, or psychic, tears — the ones tied to grief, joy, or overwhelm.

Crying hard appears to recruit this same autonomic surge, so a heavy cry can swell the nasal lining through its nerve supply at the same time tears are physically overflowing into it — two mechanisms compounding into one dramatic sniffle.

Why Some People Cry Snottier Than Others

This also explains a real pattern that isn’t just perception: some people are consistently “snottier” criers than others, and it likely isn’t about who’s more upset. The width of the puncta and nasolacrimal duct varies from person to person — a 2025 review published in Cureus notes this variation directly affects how quickly tear flow backs up — so the same volume of tears backs up faster in some drainage systems than others.

Parasympathetic reactivity varies too — some nervous systems swing harder into that rest-and-digest mode under emotional load, producing more nasal swelling for the same tearful trigger. Neither difference has anything to do with the depth of the feeling behind the tears.

That’s the useful correction “ugly crying” deserves: the runny nose is a byproduct of two ordinary biological systems being pushed past their quiet operating range, not a measure of how genuinely someone is grieving, or a lapse in composure. The plumbing overflows and the nerves fire — and a two-hankie cry is just those systems doing exactly what they’re built to do, only louder than usual.
