Desperate to find the kidnapper, Tom turns to his estranged father, Peter Willis (De Niro), a retired police detective who first arrested the serial killer called “The Whisper Man,” who is connected to the case. Monaghan plays Detective Amanda Beck, who is working with Willis on the case.

Based on the 2019 bestselling novel of the same name by Alex North, The Whisper Man also stars Owen Teague (Noa in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes). Will Brill and Hamish Linklater.

As of Friday morning, The Whisper Man has earned a 46% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer based on 26 reviews. RT’s Critics Consensus, Audience Summary and Popcornmeter score based on verified user ratings are sttill pending.

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘The Whisper Man’?

Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert is among the top critics on RT who give The Whisper Man a “rotten” review score, writing, “A couple of memorable performance choices stand out, but they get drowned out by the dull noise that is the majority of this movie.”

Laura Miller of Slate also gives the film a “rotten” score. Miller writes in her RT review summary, “Perhaps the only truly realistic thing in The Whisper Man is the incompetence of the police, something all too familiar to readers of true crime but seldom represented onscreen.”

Kevin Maher of The Times (UK) isn’t a fan of The Whisper Man, either, writing on RT, “This lazy pick’n’mix serial killer flick — bit of The Silence of the Lambs here, bit of Zodiac there, lots of The Bone Collector everywhere — is undone by an excess of formula and a thunderingly non-committal turn from Robert De Niro.”

The film also gets a “rotten” score from Jacob Oller of AV Club, who writes on RT, “You could think up a less threatening name for a serial child killer than The Whisper Man, but few others would so aptly capture the experience of watching this barely-there thriller.”

Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle is among the top critics on RT who give The Whisper Man a “fresh” score, writing, “Director James Ashcroft clearly takes pleasure in encouraging big, eccentric performances from all the actors playing unsavory characters.”

Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times was completely impressed by The Whisper Man, writing in her “fresh” take on RT, “The Whisper Man is as good as it gets.”

William Bibbiani of The Wrap also awarded the film a “fresh” score, writing in his RT review summary, “Oh, how we long for an era when we could take films like The Whisper Man for granted, instead of thanking our lucky stars that an above-average serial killer thriller with a respectable cast was made at all.”

Glenn Kenny of The New York Times also awards The Whisper Man a “fresh” score on RT, writing, “While the cast doesn’t exactly make the material fresh, it does command attention.”
