Toy Story 5 Sets Disney+ Release Date After Becoming the Highest-Grossing Movie in the Franchise

Toy Story 5 is officially coming to Disney+ on September 23.
The streaming release date is just over four months after the film’s initial release in theaters, a standard timeline for Pixar movies. A spread of 4K Blu-rays, including a highly sought after 4K steelbook, will be released the day before, on September 22. The movie is also already available to rent or purchase digitally from PVOD platforms.
A new trailer was released in anticipation of the Disney+ arrival that largely features an army of Buzz Lightyears. The streaming release announcement is also accompanied by a new music video for the piano version of the Taylor Swift song featured in the movie, “I Knew It, I Knew You," now available on Spotify, Apple Music, and Disney+.
Toy Story 5 grossed just over $1.1 billion worldwide with a reported budget of $250 million, surpassing the box office performance of the previous sequel, Toy Story 4. The Toy Story franchise as a whole has now grossed over $3.3 billion, and only slightly trails behind Universal's Despicable Me as the second highest-grossing animated media franchise of all time.
The latest Pixar sequel introduces a new villain, LilyPad, tackling the topic of technology for kids. Following the end of Toy Story 4, Woody is a little less of a main character, with the movie instead focusing more on Jessie, Buzz, and a gaggle of new characters.
The movie currently sits at a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest in the very acclaimed franchise. Critic Clint Gage gave the film a 7/10 in his review for IGN, saying it ultimately "manages to pull off an adventurous and resonant conclusion."
The sequel's box office success follows what Pixar reported as a disappointing run for Hoppers, which was in part blamed for recent layoffs at the studio. Still, Pixar will be going back to originals with its next movie, Gatto, slated for release next March. There’s been no official word on what’s next for the Toy Story saga, but the franchise does seem to always find its way back.
