Motorola May Be About To Return To Making Smartwatches

Motorola was among the first brands to invest big into modern smartwatches with 2014 launches like the Moto 360, and it seems to have another on the way, the Motorola Moto Watch Ultra.
Leaked images published by the Mac Observer appear to be official-looking renders of the wearable, just like those you might eventually see on a retailer’s store page.
The name suggests this may be a higher-end watch than the Motorola Moto Watch released in January 2026. These images do offer some specific insights, but not enough to fully uncover what sort of wearable the Watch Ultra really is.
For example, the handy lettering on the back plate of the watch suggests it has 5ATM water resistance, plus IP68 water and dust resistance. It has a 46mm stainless steel case, an upgrade from the aluminum of the current Moto Watch.
The most eye-opening part, though, is LTE — again it’s written on the rear of the casing. While this form of mobile internet is fairly common in smartwatches it raises the question of what LTE would be used for.

Motorola’s last generation watch abandoned Google’s Wear OS smartwatch software in favor of a simpler fitness watch platform.
Such a watch has little need for mobile internet unless it also has advanced adventuring features, typically used for communication with folks back home — like the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro. That is not the kind of style the Moto Watch Ultra exudes, suggesting we may be about to witness Motorola head back into the Wear OS fold.
Motorola’s last watch instead attempted to stand out with a Polar partnership, promising “Polar Fitness Tracker precision.” Polar makes its own high-end, and lower-end, fitness watches, and is credited with inventing the hjeart rate chest strap back in 1977.
These leaked Moto Watch Ultra images bear no mention of Polar — it may or may not be a fixture here. However, the design of the heart rate array does suggest significand effort has gone into the sensor array. It’s completely different to that of the Moto Watch from early 2026.
Motorola Moto Watch Ultra Specs
It appears to have a similar hardware arrangement to Garmin’s higher-end watches. There are four light sensor elements, a large central set of LEDs and four other LEDs around the perimeter of the heart rate mound.
Garmin uses these outer LEDs during tracked exercise to help improve accuracy. The Motorola Watch Ultra apparently needs better hardware too. Multiple Moto Watch reviews from the beginning of 2026 complained about sketchy fitness tracking accuracy, despite the partnership with Polar in tow.
The company is yet to officially acknowledge the Motorola Moto Watch Ultra, and the veracity of these leaks is still up for debate.
