Hilary Duff penned a tribute to Hayden Panettiere following her death on Sunday at the age of 36.

The actress recalled growing up alongside Panettiere as young stars navigating fame. In the early 2000s, Duff starred in the hit television series Lizzie McGuire, and Panettiere featured in the film Remember the Titans, acting opposite Denzel Washington. Panettiere would later land her breakout role in 2006, when she played cheerleader Claire Bennet on the popular sci-fi series Heroes.

Duff looked back at their shared experience and the moments of joy in between. “Sweet Hayden. Really tough hearing this news,” Duff began in a social media post. “We lost touch through the years but I will always remember you as so hardworking and effervescent, with that big, gorgeous smile. I remember staying up late, chatting and gossiping, and connecting because we were part of such a small sliver of people who actually understood the strange lot in life we were navigating.. so young, with no real idea how to make sense of any of it.”

She added, “I so deeply wish this wasn’t the end for you. Sending a heart full of love to your family, the many people you impacted and everyone who loved you. Rest easy.”

Tributes from fans and colleagues across Hollywood have poured in following Panettiere’s tragic death. In addition to Remember the Titans and Heroes, the actress was also known for her memorable roles in Bring It On: All or Nothing, Ice Princess, and the TV series Nashville. Her death is being investigated by South Carolina’s Greenville Police Department after an apparent overdose.

Brittany Snow, who also began her career in Hollywood as a young actress and starred with Panettiere on the soap opera Guiding Light, shared a remembrance of her former co-star. “I was lucky enough to play your sister for 3 years. I related to you so much in so many ways. Ways that I never even told you,” wrote Snow. “Your talent was remarkable & so was your determination to be a bold, bright shining light. And you were.”
