The 2027 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Is More About Power, Not Penny-Pinching Fuel Economy

  • Punchy hybrid power, good ride for a truck, ergonomic interior controls.
  • LOWS

  • Not as fuel-efficient as expected, down on towing and hauling capability versus rival trucks, high starting price.
  • VERDICT

  • A hybrid powertrain transforms the Tundra into a stronger performer rather than a fuel-miser.

Overview

Toyota is a brand known for its proficiency with hybrid powertrains, so it's no surprise that it would apply its expertise to the full-size Tundra Hybrid pickup truck. Except dropping a hybrid system into a full-size truck doesn't suddenly squeeze its fuel consumption down to Prius levels. Instead, the Tundra Hybrid utilizes its electric assist to ramp up horsepower and performance compared to the nonhybrid Tundra (reviewed separately).

An electric motor aids a twin-turbocharged V-6 to make up to 466 horsepower. Four-wheel drive is available, but the base model comes with rear-wheel drive. Speaking of base model, the Tundra Hybrid skips over the nonhybrid's lower SR and SR5 trims and starts off with the well-equipped Limited; only the CrewMax cab is offered here as well.

Expert Tip: If you want a pickup truck with better fuel economy, you're better off looking at a compact or mid-size alternative. If your use case doesn't involve heavy towing and hauling, the Ford Maverick Hybrid will provide a far thriftier experience.

What's New for 2027?

The Tundra receives a light facelift for 2027 that includes a larger grille, new rectangular fog lamps, and a reshaped front bumper. The TRD Pro model gets several upgrades too, including new Fox Q3S adjustable shocks and a warm yellow exterior color called Honeycomb. Toyota's IsoDynamic bucket seats have migrated from the Tacoma lineup to the Tundra as an option on the TRD Pro trim.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Hybrid Powertrain: twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 and one electric motor, 437 hp combined, twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 and one electric motor, 466 hp combined
  • Transmission: 10-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive

The Tundra's gas twin-turbo V-6 makes 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, then the electric motor chips in to make up the difference—system totals are 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet. Equally as important, full torque is available at a low 2400 rpm, ideal for doing pickup-truck-type work. With the optional TRD Performance package, horsepower is boosted to 466 ponies.

Every Tundra uses a 10-speed automatic transmission, and the hybrid unit allows for electric-only driving at crawling speeds and even at some higher velocities when going downhill. The Tundra features coil-spring rear suspension, which pays off with surprisingly smooth unladen ride quality.

The only thing missing from the Tundra's lineup is a direct competitor that answers the lunacy of the high-powered Ford F-150 Raptor R and Ram TRX. While the TRD Pro does offer a lifted suspension and skid plates that enable some level of off-road glory, its all-terrain tires don't fling mud as far as others. In our recent test of a TRD Pro fitted with the optional TRD Performance package (which adds a dual-air intake, a special cat-back exhaust, and some additional badging), we were impressed with the truck's gusto, but didn't like the boisterous exhaust.

0–60-MPH Times

  • C/D 60-mph Test: 5.6 seconds (TRD Pro with Performance package), 5.6 seconds (Limited)

In Comparison: Despite its boost in power, the TRD Pro with the Performance package returned an identical 5.6-second 60 mph time as our long-term Tundra Hybrid Limited.

Towing and Payload Capacity

  • Max Towing: 11,450 pounds
  • Max Payload: 1680 pounds

The Tundra hybrid is rated to tow up to 11,450 pounds in the Limited trim and 11,380 in Platinum, though that’s with rear-wheel drive and short bed. Four-wheel drive and the long bed lower those numbers incrementally. For reference, the gas-only Tundra has a max-tow rating of 12,000 pounds. The added weight of the hybrid components reduces payload only slightly, the Limited hybrid's payload maxing out at 1680 pounds compared to the gas-only Limited’s 1700-pound rating.

In Comparison: The F-150 PowerBoost hybrid, by comparison, tops the Tundra Hybrid in both towing and payload measures: It can pull up to 12,700 pounds and has a 2120-pound payload.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 22 mpg (Limited), 20 mpg (Capstone)
  • EPA City Ratings: 18-20 mpg
  • EPA Highway Ratings: 20-24 mpg

One glance at the EPA fuel economy estimates, and it's clear that the Tundra hybrid’s primary mission is power rather than efficiency. Rear-wheel-drive models are rated for up to 20 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. True, its 20-mpg city estimate improves on the nonhybrid Tundra’s 18 mpg city, but the hybrid's 24-mpg highway number is only one better than the standard truck's.

Four-wheel drive Tundra Hybrids are rated for up to 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. A Limited model delivered 22 mpg on our 75-mph highway route, while a Capstone version managed 20 mpg. For more information about the Tundra Hybrid's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Large square air vents, a massive infotainment screen, and knobs and buttons that are easy to use control numerous functions and dominate the Tundra's dashboard. Toyota has gone full luxury with wood accents available on the 1794 Edition; the Capstone has genuine American Walnut veneer trim. The center console provides a massive catch-all for storage, and there's no shortage of door cubbies for mail, beverages, or tools.

Second Row: The only drawback with the hybrid is that the battery lives under the rear seat, so cargo space there has been eliminated.

Cargo Capacity: The smaller extended-cab Tundra (a.k.a. Double Cab) is only available on nonhybrid models, leaving all Tundra hybrids in the larger crew cab body style with a choice of either a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed. In our testing, we fit 20 carry-on suitcases inside the Tundra's cabin with the rear seats stowed.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 14.0-inch touchscreen
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Audio System: 9-speaker stereo (standard), 12-speaker JBL stereo (optional)

The cornerstone of the Tundra hybrid’s infotainment experience is its standard 14.0-inch touchscreen. It’s bright, legible, and of high enough resolution to mistake Waze navigation for a video game. The only misstep is the lack of a dedicated physical tuning knob; the volume knob makes for fast adjustment, and we wish we could scroll through XM with the same intuitive action.

A 12-speaker JBL audio system is optional on the Limited and standard on the above trims, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is also offered.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Every Tundra is stocked with a full complement of driver-assistance technology; blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer detection are standard on all Tundra hybrids.

  • Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control
  • Optional Safety Features: 360-degree exterior camera

For information about the Tundra Hybrid's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Toyota's limited and powertrain warranties align with what's offered on every other full-size pickup truck. However, the brand's complimentary scheduled maintenance is unmatched in the segment.

  • Limited Warranty: three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: five years or 60,000 miles
  • Hybrid Component Warranty: 10 years or 150,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: two years or 25,000 miles
