Overview

A compact crossover with the Maserati name on the back has to live up to expectations, and the 2027 Grecale mostly succeeds. A twin-turbocharged V-6 is standard, making 385 horsepower in its standard format and 523 horsepower in the top-spec Trofeo. Handling is spry, although the steering is less feelsome than we'd like. An air-spring suspension system is optional and provides several different driving modes with a ride that can be adjusted from pillowy soft to stiff as steel.

Understanding the Grecale's place in the market requires an understanding of performance-luxury variants. The Grecale is not so much a rival to the Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC300, but targeted at buyers of the Audi SQ5 and the Mercedes-AMG GLC-class models. For the price, the Maserati offers more exclusivity, unique curb appeal, and that exotic badge on its grille.

Expert Tip: An electric version called Grecale Folgore is also offered, but we review that model separately.

What's New for 2027?

The Grecale has been freshened for 2027 with an updated front grille and bumper, a new dashboard clock, revised steering wheel, and a new push-button gear selector that features real metal buttons. A parking assistance feature and a driver-attention monitor have been added this year as well.

A new base model under the mid-range Modena trim has been added, but it still comes with the same 385-hp twin-turbo V-6 engine. Two new wheel designs have been added in both 20- and 21-inch sizes

C/D Expert TipC/D Expert Tip:

If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Engines: 385-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, 523-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6
  • Transmission: 8-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: all-wheel drive

A 385-hp twin-turbocharged V-6 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is standard. The Trofeo trim sports the same engine, but it's been tuned up to 523 horsepower. Base and Modena models come standard with a traditional spring suspension setup, but a height-adjustable air-spring suspension is optional on those trims and standard on the Trofeo.

The ride is forgiving in the Grecale's Sport drive mode, and with the GT mode selected, it is downright pillowy. Handling is confident, and the Grecale's athleticism is easy to exploit, but its steering is not as lively as the now-discontinued Porsche Macan GTS. The most aggressive Corsa driving mode in the Trofeo trim firms things up too much and makes the ride uncomfortable.

Car value calculator

What's Your Car Worth?

Car and Driver calculates your car's value in three free and easy steps - using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.

0–60-MPH Times

  • Claimed 60-mph Time: 5.0 seconds (base, Modena), 3.6 seconds (Trofeo)

In Comparison: Maserati's estimated 60-mph time puts the Trofeo model in the same ballpark as the Macan GTS, which managed a 3.7-second 60-mph time at our test track.

Towing and Payload Capacity

  • Max Towing: 5516 pounds

In Comparison: The Grecale can tow more than rival SUVs from Audi and Mercedes-AMG.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • EPA City Rating: 18 mpg
  • EPA Highway Rating: 25 mpg

The EPA estimates that the Grecale will deliver 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. When we get a chance, we'll put the Grecale through its paces on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route and report its results here. For more information about the Grecale's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: The Grecale's elegant interior design incorporates some high-tech flourishes. Along with rich materials throughout the cabin, the dash includes a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a pair of touchscreens on the center stack. A three-zone climate control system, as well as a head-up display, is optional.

Second Row: Average-sized passengers have enough space to be comfortable in the second row as long as they're not riding three-across.

Cargo Capacity: The Grecale's cargo area offers up to 20 cubic feet of space. The area behind the power-folding rear seats features a flat load floor with a storage compartment underneath. We fit eight carry-on suitcases behind the Grecale's back seats; with the rear seats folded, we fit 21.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Audio System: 14-speaker Sonus Faber stereo (standard), 21-speaker Sonus Faber stereo (optional)

The Grecale's Google-based infotainment system primarily runs through a 12.3-inch touchscreen, but there's another 8.8-inch touchscreen below that controls other functions, and a 12.2-inch digital gauge display. Every model comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; a Wi-Fi hotspot is available with a subscription.

The Grecale's infotainment system also works with voice-command services like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The audio system can also be upgraded to a 21-speaker, 1285-watt Sonus Faber stereo.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

All Grecales come standard with basic safety features that include frontal collision mitigation, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and reverse automatic braking. The ADAS L2 package is optional and adds adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature, an intersection collision avoidance system, and traffic-sign recognition.

  • Standard Safety Features: automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist
  • Optional Safety Features: adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature

For information about the Grecale's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Maserati provides a competitive limited and powertrain warranty, compared with other luxury brands that compete in this space. However, unlike BMW, the company doesn't provide any complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited Warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: none
