The total number of injured reached 40, with 17 people hospitalised, said the governor of the Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratyev.

He accused Ukraine of "a deliberate strike on civilians". Ukraine has not commented. Both sides deny targeting civilians deliberately.

It is unclear what the drone was targeting. Some Ukrainian Telegram channels have claimed it crashed onto the beach as a result of electronic warfare which jammed the drone's signal. Several eyewitnesses were quoted by Russian media as saying gunfire preceded the explosion, indicating that air defences may have tried to shoot the drone down.

The crash occurred on a beach near the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka on the Black Sea. With its warm climate, long beaches and developed tourist infrastructure it is a popular holiday destination for Russians, in particular since sanctions have curtailed international travel for many.

Tourists and residents of Arkhipo-Osipovka told local media outlets that no sirens sounded ahead of the drone attack.

"We covered ourselves with sun loungers, and didn't see where it exploded," said one holidaymaker. Another person said that while they did not see the drone hit they could hear "gunfire, like a machine gun" followed by an explosion.

"This all happened in front of my children. My child is having a nervous breakdown," said a third.

Over the course of the last year Ukraine has had increasing success in carrying out long-range strikes deep into Russia, hitting energy infrastructure and commercial warehouses it says are used for military purposes.

On several occasions these strikes have caused civilian deaths, with eight people in different Russian cities killed at the weekend.

Russia meanwhile has launched attacks on residential areas and cities from the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, killing and injuring thousands of civilians.

On Saturday, at least nine people were killed and dozens injured in Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The city's mayor said a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district was partially destroyed, trapping people inside. Last week a strike on a building in Ukraine's Kryvyi Rih area killed a family of 10.

In recent weeks Ukrainian strikes have in particular targeted warehouses belonging to Wildberries – a large online retailer dubbed the "Russian Amazon".

The latest strike hit a warehouse in the Vladimir region, east of Moscow, overnight into Monday. Dozens of Wildberries warehouses dotted around Russia – many located thousands of kilometres from the Ukrainian border – have now been hit.

Kyiv says Wildberries depots are used to supply the Russian military, which Moscow denies. Yet the platform sold a variety of military-related goods such as body armour until recently, alongside items with both civilian and drone-production applications. %!s()

ForbesToday’s NYT Connections Hints And Answers: Monday, August 3By Kris HoltForbesToday’s NYT Connections Answers Explained: Monday, August 3By Kris Holt

Hey there, Connectors! I hope your week is off to a great start.

I have to admit, I haven’t been paying super close attention to Connections game numbers lately. This -50 edition snuck up on me. In the past, that’s meant some funkiness in the game, whether on a game number that ends in “50” or in the few following editions. So you might need to stay on your toes more than usual in the coming days (or today since I haven’t looked at today’s game yet). Good luck out there!

Before we start, we’ve got a lovely community on Discord, where we chat about Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of things. You’re more than welcome to join us!

Also, my weekend editions of this column are available over on my newsletter, Pastimes. I sometimes write about other things that are on my mind there as well.

Play Puzzles & Games on Forbes

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Tuesday, August 4 are coming right up. Let’s get rolling!

How To Play Connections

Connections is a free New York Times daily word game that you can play on the NYT’s website or Games app. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive, which includes every previous game.

Connections presents you with a grid of 16 words (sometimes phrases, symbols or numbers). The aim is to arrange them into four groups of four. You don’t know how they hit together or what the category for each group is: that’s what you have to figure out.

There’s only one correct solution and there are often red herrings. You can guess incorrectly three times. A fourth wrong guess, and it’s game over.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to deduce, followed by blue, green and purple. Often, the yellow and green groups have synonyms, the blues have cultural references and the purples have some kind of wordplay involved. But this is not a hard and fast rule. Be ready for curveballs – part of the fun of Connections is in how the NYT shakes things up to keep you on your toes.

As with Wordle and similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends using an emoji-based grid. The game tracks your progress too.

Many players take pride in having long win streaks or getting a reverse rainbow – correctly guessing the purple, blue, green and yellow groups in that order with no mistakes. That adds an extra little challenge.

Today’s NYT Connections Word List

Scroll slowly!

After today’s Connections word list, I’ll give you a hint for each category. After that, I’ll reveal one word that goes into each group. Then I’ll reveal the categories, followed by the full answers.

Got it? Cool.

Today’s 16 words are...

A Hint For Today’s Connections Groups

The hints for today’s Connections categories are:

• 🟨 Yellow group — roll out the barrel (an extended one, in fact)
• 🟩 Green group — like a building with a spire that was originally used to tether blimps, a commercial area with many video billboards and a large green space in the middle
• 🟦 Blue group — put your best foot forward, then maybe the other one. Then perhaps the first one again
• 🟪 Purple group — like one of Lenny Kravitz's favored tools, the Grand Canyon and a plunging neckline

One Answer For Each Connections Group

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Let’s take a look at one answer for each group.

Here we go…

• 🟨 Yellow group — CIGARETTE
• 🟩 Green group — SUBWAY STATION
• 🟦 Blue group — SEWING MACHINE
• 🟪 Purple group — GOOSE FORMATION

Today’s Connections Categories

Today’s Connections groups are...

• 🟨 Yellow group — long cylindrical things
• 🟩 Green group — iconic NYC sights
• 🟦 Blue group — things with pedals
• 🟪 Purple group — V-shaped things

What Is Today’s Connections Answer?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your last chance to look away.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

• 🟨 Yellow group — long cylindrical things (CIGARETTE, FOAM ROLLER, POOL NOODLE, PRETZEL ROD)
• 🟩 Green group — iconic NYC sights (BODEGA, PIGEON, SUBWAY STATION, TAXI CAB)
• 🟦 Blue group — things with pedals (PIANO, SEWING MACHINE, SWAN BOAT, UNICYCLE)
• 🟪 Purple group — V-shaped things (ANGLE BRACKET, CHEVRON, GOOSE FORMATION, PEACE SIGN)

I held my breath while opening today’s game since it was a -50 edition, but I flew through this one. As soon as I saw GOOSE FORMATION, I had the purples figured out. For some reason, I thought of The Mighty Ducks and their flying-V attack formation, even though I’ve only ever seen the third movie in that series. As soon as I spotted three other things that fit, I had that group locked in. (In case you're wondering, a CHEVRON is a symbol shaped like this: ^)

The long rolly things were up next thanks to POOL NOODLE and FOAM ROLLER. Then BODEGA and SUBWAY STATION helped make the greens sort of clear. I guessed SWAN BOAT instead of PIGEON first, since I thought they were a thing you can go on in a Central Park pond. I swiftly realized my error and got the green group.

I'll be honest, I didn't even think about what the blue category might be. I just instantly submitted it when there were only four options remaining. That extended my streak to 520 wins.

How did you get on this time? Here's my grid:

🟪🟪🟪🟪
🟨🟨🟨🟨
🟩🟩🟩🟦
🟩🟩🟩🟩
🟦🟦🟦🟦

I’m a little pressed for time, so no separate Answers Explained column today. Sorry. The category titles largely handle things for us anyway, I think, and I didn't see a glaring red herring.

Be sure to check my blog for hints and the answer for tomorrow’s game of Connections if you need them.

P.S. This popped up in my YouTube recommendations and I enjoyed it very much. Metallica played shows in Dublin last month, and of course they had to bust out their version of “Whiskey in the Jar.” I love how the crowd sings along, including with the riff:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!

Please follow my blog for more NYT Connections hints and help with other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. I’d really appreciate that as it helps me out. If you share this column with others who play Connections, that would be lovely too. You can also read my weekend editions of this column and more of my writing at my newsletter, Pastimes. %!s()

Paul Rivera, the author of the autopsy, told the New York Times that a section titled “What Happened in 2024” was missing from the published version but had been included in the version he personally handed to embattled party chairman Ken Martin in January.

The Democratic National Committee has previously claimed the autopsy had been released “in its entirety”.

Rivera said that elements of the report that were excised included questions about Joe Biden’s decision to run for re-election and the policy influence of Democrat party operatives who had become “generationally wealthy off politics”.

While the chapter did not name those who had become enriched he wrote that Democrats seeking change “keep banging their heads up against a system proven to be inflexible and self-enriching.

“Whether that was a conscious decision on their part to bury the section for the purposes of hiding a paragraph, I don’t know,” Rivera told the Times. “That’s a them question. What I can tell you is they had it, and they made a decision not to release it.”

Martin disputed that account in statement to the paper, saying “this alleged report section was not in any binder I reviewed”. Had it been included, he added, “we would have released it with the rest of the report.”

The report was released in May to resounding disappointment that it had failed to address why the party, or its two presidential candidates, Biden and later Vice-President Kamala Harris, had failed to gain sufficient traction to win against Donald Trump.

The missing chapter, provided by Rivera and published in full by the Times, states that Democrat wins before the election led the party “to believe they were stronger than they actually were. President Biden, seeing those results, made the consequential decision to seek re-election even when Americans were already sending a very strong signal: they were unhappy with the status quo.”

The report said that Democrats had failed to do enough to convince voters that Trump was an unacceptable candidate and made wrongful assumptions about Latino and male voters. It pointed to successful Democrat candidates in swing states who concentrated on economic and cost-of-living messaging more than identity politics.

The Democrat party now heads into the midterm elections in November and the 2028 presidential election with a significant $2m cash deficit while the Republican party nationally reports a positive balance over $128m. A recent supreme court decision indicates that the cash gap could widen.

Among the topics Rivera attempted to address in the disputed “What Happened” chapter were entries about Biden’s decision to seek re-election; a loss of support among Hispanic, Black, Asian American and Native American voters; and the issue of party officials and consultants being insulated or divorced from voter’s concerns by wealth.

“It is therefore possible the people ‘in the room’ at the highest levels of 2024 decision making misunderstood the mood and practicalities facing everyday America,” Rivera wrote, according to missing section. “They missed important signals about why people were frustrated with Democrats, who seemed not to appreciate or understand their situation.”

The Times report may now set off a new round of question about its direction as Democrat primary voters head to the polls in Michigan tomorrow to chose between moderate and progressive Senate candidates Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed.

Martin said the party would have released the disputed or missing chapter “that went after self-enriching consultants” if it had had them and that he personally had campaigned for the party chairmanship “to hold the consultant-industrial complex accountable and ensure the party only pays for work that actually helps us win”.

Rivera said he was now going public with the claim, along with his own 564-page review of the election loss. “It’s coming from a place of hope and, honestly, a little bit of desperation,” he told the outlet. “I think that we need some disruption here to force change.” %!s()

"They're clearly dominating on open models right now, and I wouldn't be surprised if they start dominating at the frontier either by the end of this year or next year at the rate of progress," he told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" on Monday.

Fueling this revolution is the open collaboration and sharing ecosystem in China, while model makers in the U.S. are "building in silos" and risk falling behind, he said.

Last month, OpenAI agents broke out of a training environment and hacked open-source software developer platform Hugging Face, raising concerns over the rapid evolution of powerful AI and cybersecurity tools.

The incident also brought months of simmering cybersecurity fears to a head, demonstrating how easily AI agents could cause immense damage, while making the case for open models in the era of skyrocketing token costs.

Delangue, a proponent of open-source models, blamed engineering mistakes for the recent attack on Hugging Face and said his company used a Nvidia version of a Chinese open model to resolve the attack.

In recent months, Chinese open-source models have been closing the capabilities gap with U.S. model makers, sparking debate over whether to restrict access. Last month, technology heavyweights such as Microsoft, Palantir and Nvidia signed a letter urging policymakers to avoid restricting open-weight models and suppressing competition.

"AI cybersecurity is going to become a huge market in the U.S. and in the world," Delangue said. "In this market, probably open models will be kings."

Delangue said the company maintains a "healthy collaboration" with OpenAI and called the frontier lab "good partners" before and after the incident. %!s()

Scottish animal campaigns charity, OneKind, also welcomed the decision.

Chief executive Jason Rose said: "We are very relieved that the lives thousands of young gannets will be spared this year, and many more birds won't bear the emotional toll of disruption to their lives, families and communities."

The Scottish Seabird Centre, said it was the "right decision" for Scotland's seabirds.

Emily Burton, conservation manager, said: "Gannet populations have suffered significant declines, and many colonies are still recovering from the impacts of avian influenza."

More than 106,000 people signed a petition, external calling for the Scottish government to prohibit the hunt.

The cultural significance of the hunt is recognised under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and modern hunts require a licence from NatureScot.

Agnes Rennie, is chair of Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn, the local community land group for the north of Lewis. She said: "The guga hunt is a centuries-old tradition which reinforces our unique communal identity and helps families keep ancient Gaelic customs alive and relevant in the modern world."

Historian Donald S Murray said food security was not guaranteed, and argued that the hunt was not unique.

He said that in New Zealand sooty shearwater, also known as muttonbirds, were traditionally hunted on Rakiura, which is also known as Stewart Island.

Murray described the campaign against the guga hunt as "monstrous".

Anti-guga hunt graffiti was sprayed on walls at NatureScot's headquarters in Inverness in February, and was followed by a rooftop protest in March.

Murdo MacRitchie, of the Save Our Guga Harvest group, said there was "deep disappointment" in Ness following the decision.

He added: "However, that decision has to be respected and we will continue to work with NatureScot to help us fully understand the scientific grounds on which it was based.

"It should be noted that NatureScot addressed the issue of welfare and, having taken advice from Scotland's chief veterinary officer, again confirmed the method of dispatch is humane."

Torcuil Crichton, Labour MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, has submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to find out how NatureScot came to its conclusion.

"Last year, when the Men of Ness took 500 guga from Sula Sgeir the science backed them up and the recommendation was for the hunt to go ahead," he said.

"The numbers haven't changed, the situation hasn't changed but the way of measuring the numbers has changed."

He said objectors had won a "hollow victory" stopping this year's hunt. %!s()
