The first of them, Laarthyr Cairnareth, is an aeldari corsair you might recruit or defeat depending how friendly to aliens you're playing it. He'll be worth having on your team thanks to his psychic powers, which he uses to find paths through the dangers of Warpspace via the labyrinth of tunnels his people use called the Webway. (If you need a guide through 40K's sea of proper nouns, Lexicanum is your friend.)

The second new companion to be revealed was Saro, a sanctioned psyker who stands in contrast to the defiantly unsanctioned psyker Idira, who was recruited in Owlcat's previous 40K game, Rogue Trader. Unlike her, Saro's mutant abilities have been turned to the service of the God-Emperor after a regime of thorough and brutal testing. As Owlcat's summary of sanctioned psykers puts it, "Their lives are usually short, and their existence is wretched, but their abilities, tempered by sanctioned rituals and an iron will, become a mighty force in the eternal struggle to defend the Imperium."

The update also includes some stats based on decisions players made in the beta. Apparently the most popular player-character choice was a Noble Officer from a Hive World, and the faction most befriended via Dark Heresy's reputation system was the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus. The most-bought item was the melta charge because, as Owlcat says, "Someone clearly likes big kabooms."

Owlcat recently reassured fans that, while its upcoming Expanse game is more of a cinematic-style RPG, the studio won't turn its backs on hardcore RPGs. And Dark Heresy sure seems like the kind of build-focused hardcore CRPG Owlcat is known for. It doesn't have a release date at the moment, and according to our Ted Litchfield, now is actually the time to get disgustingly into the previous game, Rogue Trader.

“The response from audiences has been overwhelming and a wonderful reminder of how much people still value the shared experience of seeing a great film together,” Alex’s artistic director Miles Williams said in a statement which thanked Universal Pictures “for recognizing the important role historic theatres continue to play in Hollywood’s cinematic legacy.”

The Odyssey’s domestic box office total reached $395.5 million over the weekend. The film relinquished first place to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Sony’s superhero sequel success story, which is sharing a portion of the Imax screens with Nolan’s movie.

The 900-seat Alex, known for its mix of Classical Revival and Moderne architectural detailing, has been showing The Odyssey three times per day. The venue will be extending its run by at least two weeks.

Williams tells The Hollywood Reporter that the theatre — whose last first-run film was 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day — is now scheduling eight to 10 nights of movie programming each month. (Its busy calendar is filled with live events, from ballet performances to rock concerts.) It intends to host periodic special engagements of other large-format releases, including Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three in December and Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew in February 2027.

The Alex invested $500,000 in technical upgrades, including a new ground-floor projection booth. In-demand Los Angeles projectionist Taylor Umphenour, an Imax consultant who has worked with Nolan on his dailies, helped oversee the design and construction. “What you have at a cinema like the Alex is a true understanding of the in-person experience of shared narrative,” he says. “That’s why people are coming — and losing their minds.”

Here's how the company did, compared to analysts' consensus estimates from LSEG:

• Earnings per share: 43 cents adjusted vs. 36 cents expected
• Revenue: $1.18 billion vs. $1.15 billion expected

Sales rose 18% from $998.2 million a year earlier, while the company's net loss for the period was $47 million, a loss of 8 cents per share, Pinterest said in a statement. The social media company posted net income of $38.76 million, or 6 cents per share, a year ago.

"Our Q2 results reflect the scale and strength of our platform," Pinterest CEO Bill Ready said in the release.

Revenue this quarter should come in between $1.19 billion and $1.21 billion. The midpoint of $1.2 billion was in line with analyst expectations. The guidance "assumes a modest headwind from foreign exchange based on current spot rates," Pinterest said.

Pinterest finance chief Julia Donnelly told analysts during an earnings call that the World Cup ending and Amazon's Prime Day moving to the second quarter impacted brand spending and thus third-quarter guidance.

"The shift of Prime Day from Q3 last year into Q2 this year resulted in an approximately half-point benefit to Q2 and will represent a roughly half-point headwind to Q3 as multiple brands and retailers increase their advertising spend around that moment," Donnelly said. "Lastly, in Q2, we saw a nearly one-point benefit from World Cup-related spend that will not repeat in Q3."

Adjusted earnings for the quarter of $311 million, topped analyst projections of $270 million, according to StreetAccount.

The company's global monthly active users, or MAUs, jumped 11% year-over-year to 640 million, beating estimates of 635 million.

Global average revenue per user, or ARPU, was $1.86, ahead of projections.

During the earnings call, Ready also discussed Pinterest's use of freely available, so-called open-weight artificial intelligence models, a topic of rising interest in corporate board rooms as companies increasingly focus on AI's high costs.

"At this point, any CEO that's not taking advantage of open source models is almost certainly wasting a lot of their shareholders' money," Ready said. "And especially that's true now that you have hyperscalers making it really easy to take advantage of that open source in their their secure environment, so that you can leverage the open source in your own cloud environment, so that it's safe, it's secure."

As Pinterest continues using a mixture of both proprietary and open-weight AI models, Donnelly explained to analysts how the company manages AI-related costs using "model routing infrastructure." This lets Pinterest use "higher-cost models for complex work while using lighter, lower-cost options for routine tasks," she said.

Still, Donnelly noted that "As AI adoption continues to grow, we expect both AI-related compute and token spend to grow over time."

"We see that these investments are ROI positive, and that investment growth is planned and included in our outlook that we've provided," Donnelly said.
