Smoke from wildfires—which are burning more of the Northern Hemisphere as Earth warms—attacks nearly every system in the human body, killing tens of thousands of people a year, numerous medical studies show.

It attacks the body immediately, spiking asthma cases with increased ambulance runs within hours, swamps emergency rooms in a day or so with people suffering from heart attacks and other cardiovascular and lung issues, as well as mental health issues, doctors and scientists told The Associated Press.
Smoke also harms pregnant women, increasing the risk of premature births and low-weight babies who could have breathing problems the rest of their lives, doctors and studies say. And then there are long-term risks connecting prolonged smoke and other air pollution exposure to some cancers and dementia.
After huge global fires in 2018 and 2019, the medical and science communities started looking at the health effects from the smoke with "more and more studies coming out finding that there's all types of impacts that may not have been so obvious before," said Dr. Mary Johnson, a Harvard School of Public Health environmental health scientist.

Smoke causes inflammation by triggering the body's immune system to go into overtime to fight the irritant. Scientists have found it can harm the brain, the skin and men's sperm, with almost no system of the body spared, Johnson said. People over 60 become more prone to stroke in wildfire smoke, she said.
"Wildfire smoke is the toxic product of combustion of whatever burned," which could include houses and cars, said Dr. Courtney Howard, an emergency room physician, chair of the Global Climate and Health Alliance and president-elect of the Canadian Medical Association.
"So really it's a big giant toxic soup of particles and gases."
Scientists have counted at least 1,000 toxins in wildfire smoke, according to Colorado State University environmental toxicologist Luke Montrose.
"If I gave you a list, you would recognize some of these as being very bad, oftentimes associated with the burning of diesel fuel or cigarette smoke, things like formaldehyde or volatile organic compounds," Montrose said. "So just the smoke itself can be bad."
Rising global temperatures from climate change means more fires
So far this year, more than 5,740 square miles (more than 14,860 square kilometers) of the United States has burned from wildfires, which is 31% more than the average of the previous 10 years on this date, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. The amount of U.S. land burned each year in the 2020s—averaged out over a decade—is now more than twice what it was 30 years ago.

"Wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense because of climate change, and when a fire happens, you have smoke," said Colleen Reid, a University of Colorado geographic health professor.
Most of the biggest particles in wildfire smoke fall close to where a blaze is burning, while the smallest particles—the ones that scientists say do the most damage—travel the farthest. In a typical wildfire, the nasty particles that harm human health are about the size of one micron, Reid said.
Inside the body, particles attack
First those particles have to get by your body's protection, mainly nose hairs and mucus, then they get into your lungs and from there the bloodstream.
Montrose said the particles can be coated in lots of chemicals and have large surface areas. That triggers the body's defense system to "send signals to other cells that say, 'We have a problem. We need to mount an immune response to this.' And that's where you get your acute effect or your effect within minutes, hours or even that day." It's mostly happening in the hearts and lungs, he said.

And many people die.
On average 24,100 people died each year in the Lower 48 states between 2006 and 2020 due to long-term exposure to tiny particles from wildfire smoke, according to a study this year in the journal Science Advances. A Stanford study projects that U.S. wildfire smoke deaths will increase with climate change and by midcentury hit an annual cost of $244 billion in terms of the economic value the government puts on each life.
On a global scale, wildfire smoke particles cause 677,745 deaths annually, with almost 39% of them children under age 5, according to a 2021 study that combined observations, studies on how the body responds to the particles and computer models to calculate the toll.
The biggest nonlethal effects have to do with the way people breathe, especially those with asthma.

"We did a study here in 2014 after we had about two-and-a-half months of smoke off and on, because we're in the subarctic so we're warming at triple the global rate, so in a way we're kind of canaries in the coal mine of the health impacts of climate change," Howard said on a clear day from Yellowknife, Canada. "We found a full doubling of emergency department visits for asthma and about 50% increase in pneumonia."
"Even in individuals that don't have asthma, the air can be so irritating that you could have difficulty with your respiratory system regardless," Johnson said, "whether it's coughing, whether it's chest tightness, whether it's sore throat, headache."
There are ways to minimize the risks
Studies have linked smoke to people having more trouble with decision making and other cognitive issues. People come to the emergency room depressed, Howard said. That's why it's important to find a place with clean air—including designated shelters or libraries—to get a break from the smoke and possibly exercise, she said.
Experts suggest people wear high-quality masks when outdoors, even though they don't provide perfect protection. Inside, check windows and doors for seals, invest in a good ventilation system and check air filters, they say.

Electrical interconnects may very well be the unsung heroes of modern microchips. These tiny wires—typically made of copper due to its high conductivity—string together the billions of transistors that drive our computers and electronic devices. But as the technology advances and additional transistors are piled on, the components must shrink to the nanoscale. And that's when copper begins to fail.

Cornell researchers have developed a potential replacement for copper interconnects: single-crystal nanowires of niobium arsenide. This topological semimetal paradoxically becomes a better conductor the thinner it gets, boosting electronic performance.
The findings were published July 16 in Science. The lead author is doctoral student Yeryun Cheon. Judy Cha, the Rick and Betty Tsai Ph.D. 1981 Professor in Materials Science and Engineering in the Cornell Duffield College of Engineering, is the paper's senior author.
For the past seven years, Cha and her lab have been exploring the potential of topological semimetals, which are enticing for materials scientists and electrical engineers because extra electrons flow on the surface of the material in addition to the usual electrons in the bulk. This enables nanoscale material samples to exhibit different exotic properties at their surfaces and edges.
"Electrons that are flowing on the surface of the material travel really fast, and they do not scatter off as easily as electrons in the bulk. That's the reason why copper is suffering, because copper only has electrons flowing in the bulk," Cha said. "As you make them small, these electrons inside the copper wire start to see the surfaces and are constantly getting scattered off in different directions. That's why it becomes electrically very resistive."
In 2023, Cha's team unveiled a topological compound, molybdenum monophosphide (MoP), that proved more stable than copper when scaled down, but its conductive qualities did not improve. Now, with niobium arsenide (NbAs), the researchers have found a material that satisfies both criteria.
For decades, there have been two conventional ways to make nanowires. In vapor-liquid-solid growth, metal particles are heated to molten temperatures and soak up vapor precursors that, once supersaturated, precipitate as crystalline nanowires. In chemical vapor deposition, a precursor vapor is cooled and condensed into a solid crystalline film or nanowire.
The problem: Neither method provides control over the nanowire's dimensions or morphology. So, in order to develop these superior alternatives to copper, the researchers employed a very specific process: thermomechanical nanomolding.
With thermomechanical nanomolding, material is consolidated into a bulk feedstock, put into a porous aluminum-oxide mold and pressed at high temperatures for several hours. The mold is then etched away, and the resulting high-quality single-crystal nanowire is deposited on a silicon wafer or other surface.
Cha compares the process to using a pasta maker. "If you swap the front plate of your pasta maker, you can make fettuccine or angel hair," she said. "We just take the bulk feedstock as our 'dough' and use different molds with different pore diameters. The key is that you have to make topological semimetals small enough to maximize the surface properties to see the predicted effect. And we developed a synthesis method that gives us control over the diameter down to about 10 nanometers."
Thermomechanical nanomolding is also very fast, which increases the number of materials the researchers can screen.
"It used to be that my group would study one or two material systems per year, and now we study one material system per month," said Cha, the Lester B. Knight Director of the Cornell NanoScale Science and Technology Facility (CNF). "It's like a tenfold increase in synthesis throughput. This synthesis is really what enabled us to study these compounds."
Not only is niobium arsenide a better conductor than copper at the nanoscale, but it also is surprisingly robust and remains so at room temperature. That's important because quantum materials are often quite fragile and prone to oxidation.
"I feel like that is the real significance of the work, that one may not need the highest-quality pristine sample, and you don't need to go to the lowest-temperature, noise-free environment to see these types of quantum mechanical effects," Cha said.
Ultimately, niobium arsenide may not be a practical replacement for copper—arsenide is toxic, after all—but it is a useful proof of concept, Cha said, demonstrating that "topological semimetals are not just a toy model that physicists want to study, but they can be realistic, compelling systems."

In a post which instigated a lot of the uproar, retired Call of Duty leaker TheGhostofHope said: "They got an AI chat bot in the game now to help mfs with their loadouts as if it’s not the same shit used every year."

I, for one, am glad that Gunny isn't an AI chatbot that can't play Call of Duty, telling me how to play Call of Duty. Instead, it's effectively just a personified auto-equip button that collates dev-made weapon builds for those players who don't want to create their own, or even search online for player-made setups.
However, it's not the first time that Call of Duty has been accused of using AI. Players had suspected Activision was using AI to generate cosmetics back in Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 6, and this was confirmed last year once Valve's mandated AI disclosure appeared on the Call of Duty Steam page. Later that year, Black Ops 7 also came under fire after players found what looked like AI-generated art.
In fact, as reported by Destructoid from a group presentation, Infinity Ward co-studio head Mark Grigsby confirmed that the team is using AI in MW4. “We use whatever tools we have to enhance and help our developers to complete [tasks] on time,” explained Grigsby. “For the game, there’s developmental things. We use whatever we can, whatever tools we can [in development].”
This is backed up by the game's Steam page, which has an AI usage disclosure, reading "Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in-game assets."

So, while Gunny thankfully isn't an AI chatbot despite the vibes, its developer certainly is using this maligned tech elsewhere in its creation. I would not be surprised to see more shoddy AI-generated calling cards popping up in premium bundles once again.

BMG has announced its acquisition of the remaining interests in the songwriting works of the publishing catalogs of John Lee Hooker, Hal David, and ARC Music — three major archives that it is no understatement to say helped shape American popular music.

The deal completes a transaction first announced in 2016, when BMG acquired a majority stake in the ARC Music catalog from Fuji Music Group. BMG first partnered with Fuji Music Group to administer the catalog in 2010 before acquiring its majority interest.
The transaction includes the remaining interest in the publishing catalog of Grammy and Academy Award-winning lyricist Hal David, one of the most celebrated songwriters of the 20th century. Best known for his legendary partnership with Burt Bacharach and his defining collaborations with Dionne Warwick, David’s body of work includes “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” “Walk On By,” “What The World Needs Now Is Love,” “I Say A Little Prayer,” “Do You Know The Way To San Jose?,” “Don’t Make Me Over,” and “What’s New Pussycat?,” among others.
The acquisition also brings the entire publishing catalog of genre-defining bluesman John Lee Hooker fully under BMG for the first time, following a deal in 2022 when BMG co-acquired the rights, with Fuji Music Group, from Hooker’s estate. Songs written by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award-winner include “Boom Boom,” “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” “Dimples,” “Boogie Chillen’,” and more.
In addition, BMG has acquired the music publishing counterpart to Chess Records, ARC Music. Founded in 1948 by Leonard and Phil Chess, ARC Music is one of the most important catalogs in the history of blues, pop and rock music, including songs made famous by Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, and many others.

+ Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Michelle Branch has signed a new global recordings agreement with BMG. The announcement arrives alongside the release of a new version of “The Game of Love” by New Radicals and Michelle Branch, and ahead of her new EP of re-recorded songs titled “Everywhere and Back Again,” due later this year.
Branch said, “I’m so thrilled to be joining the BMG family for this next chapter. We have a lot of exciting projects I’ve been working on and the enthusiasm from BMG has been palpable. I can’t wait to share what we have in store.”
Jon Loba, BMG President, North & South America, said, “Michelle Branch’s songs are woven into the soundtrack of a generation. + UTA has promoted James Wright to Co-Head of its UK Music group. Wright will lead the London-based music team alongside long-standing UK Co-Head, Neil Warnock. His roster includes Lizzo, Take That, John Legend, David Byrne, Jacob Collier, Underworld, The Marías, Rita Ora and Jon Batiste.
Wright joined UTA in 2015 following the company’s acquisition of The Agency Group. Prior to that, he was an agent at Elastic Artists. Before moving into the live music sector in 2009, Wright was A&R manager for Candid Records.
Global Music Co-Heads, Sam KIrby Yoh and David Zedekcommented: “UTA’s global music business is built on collaboration across genres, disciplines and territories, and London is a cornerstone of that network. + Nice Life, label home to the Marias, Lizzo, and more, have signed singer-songwriter Hank Heaven, who is described in the announcement as a “New York City trans nonbinary artist.” Their new EP “Welterweight” will be out August 14 and was produced by Phil Weinrobe (Adrienne Lenker, Big Thief). Heaven worked as a guitarist for Samia, Del Water Gap and Gus Dapperton before releasing their first EP in 2022.
+ Warner Chappell Music has announced the promotion of David Goldsen to executive vice president of A&R. Based at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters, he will continue to report to Ryan Press, the company’s president of North America.
Over the course of his 17-year career at WCM, Goldsen has worked closely with of Zach Bryan, Sleep Token, Teddy Swims, Mitski, Vance Joy, the Red Clay Strays, and others.
Press said, “I’ve had the pleasure of working with David for over 15 years. He has a rare ability to spot talent ahead of what’s hot before it breaks mainstream, and to guide them toward not just their personal dreams, but real cultural impact. + Reservoir Media has announced the acquisition of the catalog of independent label Nacional Records, along with the catalog of its publishing arm, Canciones Nacionales. Reservoir and Nacional will also enter a new joint venture to sign and develop recording artists and songwriters. This partnership is a significant move for Reservoir in the Latin space.
Founded in Los Angeles in 2005 by Tomas Cookman, Nacional has become one of the leading independent labels in Latin music, developing artists across various Spanish speaking markets and genres. Its roster and catalog include acclaimed artists such as Ana Tijoux, Nortec Collective, Bomba Estereo, Tom Tom Club, El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, Aterciopelados, and more, and the label has released albums from such artists as Manu Chao, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Jarabe de Palo and Los Amigos Invisibles. The label earned its first Latin Grammy in 2007 with Aterciopelados’ “Oye.”
Cookman commented, “I have long been a fan of what Golnar and Rell have built at Reservoir. We initially met a few years ago and developed a mutual respect for each other’s work – until it became obvious that we should now build together. I feel we share the same work ethic and, equally as important, a love of music and the industry that supports it.”

+ Sony Music Publishing Nashville has signed country act Kruse Brothers to a worldwide publishing deal. Comprised of Chandler and Miles Kruse the duo scored a hit last year with “White on the Ground” and in February released their debut album “Heartbreak & Honky Tonk.”
Sony Music Publishing Nashville Vice President, Creative A&R Tom Luteran said, “It is rare when you meet artists for the first time and their incredible talent moves you to the point where you know you want to work together, and that’s what happened when we met Chandler and Miles.”
+ Warner Chappell Nashville and Perfect Game Creative have signed a global publishing deal with rising Texas singer-songwriter Jackson Wendell.

+ Sherrese Clarke, founder & CEO of HarbourView Equity Partners, has been named to Black Music Action Coalition’s Executive Leadership Council.
Clarke joins BMAC’s governing body after being recognized as the inaugural recipient of the BMAC Harry Belafonte Change Agent Award at the organization’s 2025 Gala. As a member of the Executive Leadership Council, Clarke will help advise BMAC’s strategic priorities, strengthen its advocacy efforts, and provide counsel on initiatives that expand access, create pathways to leadership, and drive lasting systemic change throughout the music industry.

+ Indie music publisher Third Side Music has joined forces with electronic music duo Sofi Tukker (a.k.a. Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern) in a new publishing joint venture with the artists’ company, Animal Talk. TSM has also extended its exclusive worldwide publishing administration deal with the group, which was initially signed in 2017.
“It is rare in the music industry to work with the same team for 10+ years, but it’s undeniable when a team is consistently as amazing as Third Side has been for us,” the duo said. “Sync has been such a huge part of our story. We are so grateful for how far our music has traveled around the world because of all the work Third Side has done.”

+ AEG Presents has expanded its Venue Development team in the form of internal promotions and new hires, with Cameron Marcotte being elevated to Vice President, and Jake Hiersteiner and Mike Ryan promoted to Director roles. In addition, Alyssa Sarilarp joins the company as Senior Design and Construction Specialist, Will Evans as Senior Project Manager, and Marysol Flores as Administrative Assistant.

+ Artist Legacy Group has announced that it will represent the Estate of Raul Malo, the acclaimed singer, songwriter and founding frontman of the Grammy-winning group the Mavericks. ALG will oversee the estate’s intellectual property rights, business interests and archival assets, and secure opportunities for media projects, brand partnerships and consumer products.

Alma joins Alta through the company’s new creative venture with Evan Baker’s, Silqscreen. Alta and Silqscreen will continue to jointly sign and develop songwriters and producers through their new agreement which will be led by Silqscreen’s Emmett Power and Berg. Alta Publishing is supported and administered through Sony Music Publishing; Berg joins from Electric Feel, where he most recently served as Head of Producers and Songwriters.

+ Music Venue Trust has announced the appointment of Chris Hurne as its new Head of External Affairs, effective immediately. Based in London, Chris joins MVT following a career spanning government policy, international trade, science and innovation, and the creative industries. In his new role, he will lead the organisation’s external affairs activity, with a particular focus on strengthening relationships with government, policymakers, industry stakeholders and partners as MVT continues its work to protect and support the UK’s grassroots music venue network.
Chris spent more than eight years working across the UK Government’s creative industries portfolio, most recently at the Department for Business and Trade, where he led engagement with the Creative & Media, Sport & Leisure sectors, supporting investment, trade and growth initiatives.
