From these experiments, "one change has stood out with the community," Embark explains in a new blog outlining changes. That being, "defending yourself is no longer treated the same as starting a fight."

At launch, fighting back against aggressors would, for some reason, contribute to your playstyle profile, so to speak. In a mythbusting update at the end of May, defending yourself was finally changed so that it mattered less than initiating the fight, but it was still considered aggression.

In today's update, 1.39.0, defensive PvP no longer has any impact on your matchmaking tendencies: "Only the fights you choose to start will influence your playstyle estimate, and defending yourself won't affect it at all."

To avoid any confusion, Embark has explained how this new system works:

• You and your entire squad will be considered 'defending' if an enemy player damages, downs, or knocks out any of your crew.
• The more drawn-out the fight, the more weight is given to the aggressors. A sustained shootout with high damage and downs is more impactful than a brief exchange with one side fleeing.
• Third-partying, meaning entering a fight between other squads, counts as starting a fight.

In the same blog, Embark has also confirmed that the separate squad-size matchmaking changes from 1.36.0, and the matchmaking optimisations in 1.38.0, are still active.

The changes so far have been well-received by the community, and hopefully set the massive Frozen Trail update in October on course to be a resurgence. Arc Raiders has been in a bit of a slump since the announcement that major updates would now come every six months instead of the, frankly absurd, one month.

Known in Japan under the title “Muyou no Hito,” the drama is adapted from Harada’s own short story “An Unnecessary Man.” The cast includes Aoi Yu (“Wife of a Spy”), Ogata Issey (“Onoda,” “Silence,” “Yi Yi”), Nagayama Eita (“Monster”) and Watanabe Eri (“Shall We Dance?”). Kitagawa Yoshio, whose credits include “Evil Doesn’t Exist” and “Lost Land,” serves as cinematographer.

The story follows Satomi, an employee at an art museum, after an envelope arrives bearing an unfamiliar key. It unlocks a room left behind by her father, dead a month earlier and alone at the time. Tracing what he did in his last days, Satomi uncovers a figure society had largely written off, one who nonetheless took quiet comfort in language, in tea ceremony and in small, overlooked beauty, and she comes to recognize the grace in how he lived.

The project marks a screen debut for Harada, one of Japan’s most widely read authors, with more than 10 million copies of her books sold since she began publishing in 2006. Harada trained in Japanese literature and art history, then spent time at a trading firm and at museums, among them New York’s Museum of Modern Art, before shifting into freelance curatorial and cultural writing work. Her art-themed novels include “Canvas of Paradise” and “Guernica Cover-Up.”

Bitters End will handle both the film’s international sales and its local release, which is scheduled for January 2027 in Japan.

The distributor has spent more than 30 years bringing international auteur cinema to Japanese audiences, including work by Hamaguchi Ryusuke, Bong Joon Ho, the Dardenne brothers, Jia Zhangke, Roy Anderson and Gianfranco Rosi. Recent releases handled by the company include “Below the Clouds,” “Young Mothers,” “Sex/Love/Dreams,” “Anora” and “The Odyssey.” On the production front, its credits as a producer include the Oscar-winning “Drive My Car,” “Two Seasons, Two Strangers,” which took the Golden Leopard at Locarno, Cannes prizewinner “All of a Sudden” and “All the Lovers in the Night,” an Un Certain Regard selection at Cannes. %!s()

It's another version of the traditional "What's your greatest strength?" question, which often prompts polished, rehearsed responses. Asking about a candidate's superpower, she said, gets right to the chase.

"It cuts to the core of: What are you actually the best at?" Millstein said. "What is going to make you invaluable at our company?"

Millstein said she likes to ask that question because it encourages candidates to identify the one thing they do exceptionally well, whether that's collaborating or communicating. It prompts people to focus on what sets them apart.

"There are no filler jobs at a startup," Millstein said, adding that, "everyone has so much responsibility, so much autonomy, so much boundless room for creativity."

Millstein said the question also reveals how candidates see themselves and how self-aware they are. The CEO said she believes humility and self-awareness are two of the strongest predictors of success for founders, especially at a startup. She said investors don't want to back entrepreneurs who aren't aware of their own weaknesses.

"Your success is determined by your ability to spot gaps in yourself and then in your organization," Millstein said.

When asked how she would answer the question herself, Millstein said others have told her that her superpower is her ability to do both analytical and creative work — which she referred to as tapping into the left and right sides of her brain.

"I can go high-strategy, and I can get super, super in the weeds," Millstein said.

Millstein majored in history and briefly worked in the music industry after college before cofounding Fishwife, which has grown rapidly since launching in 2020. As interest in high-protein diets has grown, sardines and other tinned fish have become both trendy and affordable staples for many Americans.

Millstein found the inspiration for the brand while studying abroad in Spain. During the pandemic, she said she craved tinned fish as a protein-rich food with a long shelf life.

In 2024, Fishwife landed a deal on "Shark Tank" that valued the brand at around $5 million. The colorfully illustrated packages can be found at retail giants like Whole Foods and Costco, as well as smaller boutique shops.

Millstein said the best founders can think strategically, zooming out to see where the business is headed years down the line while also diving into the details. They're willing to talk to people across the company and aren't above doing any job themselves, she said.

"The taking-out-the-trash thing, as a CEO, is a real thing," Millstein said.

Link actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth has discussed preparing for Nintendo's upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie — and said he was too young to play Breath of the Wild when it originally debuted.

Ainsworth is currently 17 years old, while Breath of the Wild originally launched for Switch in 2017 — meaning he would have been just eight years old at the time.

"I remember vividly when Breath of the Wild came out — and it might show my age — but I remember being quite young at the time when it came out, and so I didn't have a Switch at the time," Ainsworth told GamesRadar. "And so, I was watching gamers play it, and watching playthroughs, essentially."

While still a teenager, Ainsworth already has a string of high-profile projects under his belt — such as Netflix horror The Haunting of Bly Manor, CBC sitcom Son of a Critch, and his recent addition to the cast of HBO's House of the Dragon.

While Ainsworth may not have played Breath of the Wild a decade ago, the actor has said he's now a Zelda fan has caught himself up on the "history" of the character and series in preparation for his role. (Hopefully Nintendo has given him a Switch 2?)

"Upon being fortunate enough to play this role, such an iconic character, going back and realizing the 40 years of legacy and history, and the varied tones, the varied stories, the varied renditions and vocal performances of this character as well," Ainsworth continued. "Yeah, I'm a big fan, and just really excited, because it was an awesome thing to shoot. New Zealand is a wonderful place. But yeah, can't say too much more."

Nintendo has kept many details of its Zelda movie under-wraps, with no word on its story, setting or characters beyond Link and Zelda, the latter of whom will be played by Bo Bragason. Filming in New Zealand has now wrapped, though some fans got a sneaky glimpse — and believe they spotted Succession actress Dichen Lachman in costume as Zelda's aide Impa. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball is helming the film, and has spoken previously about wanting to make a "serious" and "grounded" adaptation that feels "real" to audiences.

With less than a year to go until the movie's April 30, 2027 launch date, fans expect to hear much more about the film soon — perhaps this fall, when Nintendo gets around to marking the Zelda franchise's 40th anniversary with its The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remaster.

“You have this tilted column that is sucking air and then propagating embers in front, and it also creates lightning. That’s another way of lighting up fuels in front of the fire, so these cells are unstoppable,” says Jean-Baptiste Filippi at the University of Corsica, France. “You cannot stop a thunderstorm, and neither can you stop a firestorm, a strong pyrocumulonimbus.”

Alongside huge blazes in Spain, France has been suffering a wildfire in the Gironde region, which President Emmanuel Macron has called the country’s most severe crisis since the second world war. The fire has burned more than 420 square kilometres since last week, coming within 15 kilometres of the city of Bordeaux and forcing around 220,000 people to evacuate. It generated a pyrocumulonimbus cloud on 24 July and another on 25 July, according to regional officials. Embers and lightning ignited new fires around the original inferno.

“We faced another firestorm, the same incredible, unprecedented, unknown phenomenon as the one we saw on Friday, when we realised we were entering a new dimension,” Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas told journalists.

It is a miracle this pyrocumulonimbus-fuelled fire hasn’t claimed any casualties, Filippi says.

Sometimes called the “fire-breathing dragon of clouds”, pyrocumulonimbus are typically generated by massive wildfires in the forests of North America, Siberia and Australia. They’ve spurred on infamous fires like the Black Saturday bushfires that killed 173 people in Australia in 2009 and the conflagration that razed the Canadian oil city of Fort McMurray in 2016. Canada’s record-breaking wildfires in 2023 generated 142 of these storms.

In Europe, however, there have been only a handful of confirmed pyrocumulonimbus in Spain and Portugal, including one during Portugal’s devastating Pedrógão Grande fire in 2017, which destroyed hundreds of homes and killed 66 people. But that appears to be changing.

“You have to have two things happening at the same time: an extreme heat source and an unstable atmosphere that interacts with the fire,” says Francesca Di Giuseppe at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. “If… the heat from the fire increases, like it’s projected to increase from our studies, then yes, you should see more of these events.”

This firestorm begins to take shape when temperatures as high as 800°C send a plume of smoke into the sky. As the hot air rises and cools, water vapour condenses onto the ash to form pyrocumulus clouds, like the fluffy white clouds you might see on a summer day, only brown or grey.  

If the plume is hot enough and the atmosphere is unstable enough, the cloud can keep rising to reach the upper troposphere at 10,000 metres, the cruising altitude of a passenger plane. It sometimes reaches the stratosphere, spreading as much smoke as a moderate volcano. It becomes a pyrocumulonimbus when the static electricity from colliding ice particles sparks thunder and lightning.

Although rain from the cloud often evaporates in the hot air, this kind of thunderstorm nonetheless creates its own weather system. The cloud’s updraft pulls in air, fanning the flames with winds reaching 160 kilometres per hour and accelerating the fire’s spread by up to five times, according to Filippi.

Meanwhile, strong downdrafts create erratic gusts that carry embers off to start new fires. Dozens of lightning strikes can ignite blazes as far as 100 kilometres ahead of the main fire. It can also create fire tornadoes of twisting flames. As the winds, embers and lightning strengthen and expand the wildfire, it releases more heat and smoke, a feedback loop that can amplify the rising cloud for many hours.

Both wind shear higher in the atmosphere and erratic gusts at the ground can take the fire in unpredictable directions, making it nearly impossible to contain its acceleration or plan targeted evacuations.

“The fire front is constantly shifting. We cannot fight it directly. It’s a David-versus-Goliath scenario,” Eric Brocardi of the National Firefighters Federation of France told local media about the Gironde fire on 2 August.  

Wildfire plumes have expanded in height since 2003 in the western US, creating more pyrocumulonimbus clouds, an increase that’s projected to continue.

Pyrocumulonimbus will have more chances to occur in Europe as well, as the fastest-warming continent experiences more extreme heat, such as the record-breaking heatwave in June, and wildfires. Increasing “climate whiplash” could also contribute, such as when a wet spring last year boosted vegetation growth on the Iberian peninsula, only for record summer heat to dry it out. This led to Europe’s worst-ever wildfires, including a pyrocumulonimbus fire in Spain.

“We need to adapt, so get prepared,” Filippi says. “Burn-proof and reduce the amount of fuel around your house.” %!s()
