2027 BMW iM3

2029 Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevy Camaro is set to make a triumphant return for the 2029 model year. The iconic pony car will likely return with two doors, but there's a strong chance that Chevy offers it in a four-door configuration too, since it will share a platform with new sedans from Buick and Cadillac. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine will likely be the base powertrain, while the Camaro is also expected to borrow the new 535-hp 6.7-liter V-8 from the Corvette. 2027 Dodge Charger Hellcat V-8

Just as the Hemi V-8 returned to the Ram 1500 pickup truck, so too will the eight-cylinder squeeze its way back under the hood of the Dodge Charger. The electric Charger Daytona has failed to catch on, and the return of the V-8 should help the muscle car regain the adoration of the Dodge fanbase. The V-8 will likely be reintroduced in 5.7-liter, 6.4-liter, and Hellcat-badged supercharged 6.2-liter form, and power outputs should remain mostly the same, with the Hellcat easily topping 700 ponies. Look for the Hemi V-8 to reappear in the Charger sometime in 2027.

2029 Dodge Copperhead

Dodge is gearing up to launch a new flagship sports car, but the Copperhead won't be a direct replacement for the beloved Viper. Instead of a slinky V-10-powered coupe, Dodge says the Copperhead will be a "hyper-muscle car." The dramatic styling will be draped over a coupe body that is smaller than the current Charger and covered with aerodynamic doodads. Under the hood, the Copperhead could feature a Hemi V-8, but Dodge has also suggested that global synergies with other brands under the Stellantis umbrella could play a factor, perhaps opening the way for the use of Maserati's Nettuno V-6. 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC

The Blue Oval is developing the new "Universal Electric Vehicle" platform, which will spawn a variety of vehicles, starting with a new compact electric truck that may end up reviving the Ranchero name. Roughly the size of the Maverick, the Ranchero EV will have much more interior space thanks to its electric powertrain and will be simpler to build, with 20 percent fewer parts. Ford will use lithium-iron-phosphate batteries to keep costs down while still delivering around 300 miles of range, and Ford also says the truck will match a four-cylinder Mustang to 60 mph. The target base price is around $30,000, with production expected in late 2027 for the 2028 model year.

2027 Genesis GV90

Sure, Genesis already has a flagship sedan, but no self-respecting luxury brand can do without a top-dog crossover these days. Enter the upcoming GV90, which will be a large three-row electric SUV with all the presence and size you expect from a range-topping model. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is one of the most exhilarating EVs on sale, and Hyundai's luxury brand, Genesis, is launching its own version of the high-performance electric SUV in the form of the GV60 Magma. The aggressive-looking crossover is the first model under the new Magma subbrand, and the GV60 Magma mirrors the Ioniq 5 N with 601 horsepower and a boost function that ups output to 641 ponies. The Genesis, however, produces more torque when the boost mode is activated at 583 pound-feet, and takes the Ioniq 5 N's simulated gearshifts to the extreme by adjusting motor output depending on the gear. The fake exhaust noises are also present, and the 4938-pound GV60 Magma also receives a retuned suspension and better brakes. Sales start in the U.S. in 2026.

2028 Genesis Magma GT

Genesis wants to prove it can do performance as well as luxury, and the electric GV60 Magma will be followed up by the Magma GT. Instead of electric motors, however, the slinky coupe will pack a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that should produce well over 600 hp. The V-8 could also be joined by a V-6 hybrid powertrain, and the Magma GT will spawn a convertible model as well as a hardcore track-focused trim. Genesis plans to take the Magma GT racing, and production should start by late 2027.

Originally expected to wear a Lexus badge, the Toyota-developed supercar will actually arrive as the first standalone model under the GR performance brand. Called the GR GT, the aggressive bodywork is wrapped around a new aluminum structure. The engine bay packs a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, hooked up to a mechanical limited-slip differential and an eight-speed transaxle, the latter of which also houses an electric motor. All told, the hybrid powertrain churns out 641 hp and 627 pound-feet of torque, providing a claimed top speed of 199 mph. Toyota says the curb weight is 3858 pounds. Prices are expected to start at around $300,000, and sales should start in late 2027.

2028 Infiniti Q50

Infiniti is going back to its roots with a new Q50 sports sedan for 2028. Playing off the popularity among enthusiasts of the G35 coupe of the early 2000s, the revived Q50 sedan will pack a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine borrowed from the Nissan Z and producing at least 400 horsepower. 2028 Jeep Wrangler Scrambler

The iconic Wrangler will gain a new halo model with the Scrambler, a two-door pickup truck with a removable roof panel and retro styling. The new front-end design borrows from the Wrangler Avil 715 concept, inspired by Kaiser Jeeps of the 1960s, and under the hood, the Scrambler will pack the 392 Hemi 6.4-liter V-8, producing at least 470 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque. Lexus signaled its interest in a high-performance EV with the Electrified Sport concept in 2021 and doubled down with the LFA concept in 2025. The concept utilizes the same aluminum platform as the hybrid GR GT, but with an unspecified electric powertrain. Lexus had said the Electrified Sport would be capable of a 60 mph sprint in the low 2.0-second range and a range of over 430 miles thanks to solid-state batteries, but those figures could change by the time the new LFA launches in a few years. 2027 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid

A team based at the University of Exeter studied the bacterium Coxiella burnetii to investigate why it is so sensitive to doxycycline. One of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics, doxycycline is effective even at low concentrations.

The paper is titled "Cryo-EM reveals multiple mechanisms of ribosome inhibition by doxycycline" and is published in Nature Communications.

A blockage inside the ribosome

Cells build proteins in a machine called the ribosome. Newly built proteins leave through an exit channel. The team discovered that in C. burnetii, antibiotic molecules stack on each other to block the ribosome exit channel, revealing a new mechanism for how doxycycline disarms the bacteria. They hope this finding could pave the way for a new generation of antibiotics derived from doxycycline.

Professor Nicholas Harmer, at the University of Exeter's Living Systems Institute, who led the research, said, "In this study, we used electron microscopy, and recent advances allow us to observe molecular structures in greater detail than ever before. We were surprised to find a number of important findings, including an entirely new mechanism for how doxycycline works against Coxiella.

"We now need to investigate whether we can expand this to other bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, which could open up a really exciting avenue for new treatments."

The wider antibiotic challenge

The search for new antibiotics is an international research priority amid a crisis of antibiotics increasingly failing to work as bacteria evolve resistance, meaning previously treatable infections can be deadly.

Coxiella burnetii is prevalent in animals and can be inhaled by humans, causing severe flu-like symptoms that can lead to death. People who work with farm animals are at particularly high risk.

Two more effects come into view

Electron microscopy allowed the team to observe ribosomes, which decode genetic instructions carried by mRNA molecules and translate them into proteins, the workhorses of the cell. The researchers observed the previously known mechanism for doxycycline working—that it targets the bacterial ribosome by blocking tRNA binding at the decoding center.

However, the researchers were surprised to find a second mechanism in effect—they observed a stack of three doxycycline molecules that completely blocks newly built proteins from exiting the ribosome, halting protein production. This prevents the translation of mRNA molecules, meaning the bacteria cannot grow and reproduce.

A second additional mechanism was observed in the more commonly studied bacterium E. coli. There, a single doxycycline molecule can radically reconfigure the ribosome into an inactive state never seen before.

Lead author Dr. William Stuart, of the University of Exeter's Living Systems Institute, said, "This result really took us by surprise—we had no idea we would find such a beautiful mechanism that explains why the antibiotic is so effective in treating C. burnetii infections. Excitingly, we suspect this could apply to other bacteria, potentially yielding new treatments against diseases that are currently difficult to treat.

"Our observation of the reconfigured inactive ribosome offers another potential route to an extremely potent future antibiotic. Our next step is to investigate whether we can harness these mechanisms to create a new way for antibiotics to fight infection, which we urgently need globally."

In a time of ever-increasing gadget prices, including Apple's, a new upgrade program with low monthly fees seems like a win for shoppers. But of course, as with anything involving credit, there are downsides to consider.

For one, this is a lease program, so you don't actually own the device you're paying for. I suppose that's not functionally different than paying off something with credit, but it introduces new problems when the lease is over. According to Apple's FAQ, "You must return your device in good working condition at the end of your lease term." If you want to return or trade in your device, you may have to pay damage fees, depending on its condition. Apple says you can also pay for AppleCare protection to avoid a damage fee (unfortunately, it's not bundled with the new upgrade program, as it was with the iPhone upgrade plan).

If you get tired of paying monthly fees, you could just buy out the rest of your lease. But if you wanted to end the lease entirely, you'll also have to pay "substantial" fees, according to Apple. The company says upgrading early (before the 12-, 24- or 36-month period you signed up for) can also incur "substantial" fees, depending on how many months are left on your lease. If you don't pay off the lease at the end of the term (or trade in for a new device), you'll also automatically be moved to monthly payments for up to six months. Apple also warns "your monthly payments may increase" in those additional months.

Unlike the iPhone Upgrade program, your lease and monthly fees for the Apple Upgrade program are handled by Klarna, a "buy now, pay later" company. Apple already offers Klarna as a payment option in Apple Pay, so this isn't exactly a new partnership. But as with anything involving credit, Klarna could be considered predatory. Its ideal customers are young people who don't have the best credit. They're also the most vulnerable when it comes to dealing with extra fees and defaults.

All of that being said, if you can comfortably pay the Apple Upgrade program's monthly fees, it's a smart way to snap up new devices. It's easier than applying for an Apple Card, and it's cheaper than the 0 percent APR payments that card offers for Apple hardware. And I'll have to admit, that $32 a month iPad Pro sure sounds tempting... but I'm going to figure out my plan for the end of that lease before I sign up. %!s()

Infinity Castle currently stands as the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, having crossed over $790 million worldwide. It quickly became the highest-grossing anime movie in the United States, a record that had been previously held by Pokémon: The First Movie for over 25 years.

It wasn't too surprising that the movie was a major contributor to a record-breaking year for the Japanese box office. Another particularly big anime movie that saw success across international markets was Chainsaw Man: The Movie Reze Arc, which came to Crunchyroll this past April.

Rafael Motamayor reviewed Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part I for IGN, and while he did take issue with the use of flashbacks, he also praised “some good fights that provide satisfying payoffs to character storylines years in the making.”

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle directly follows the anime series’ fourth season, and is the first installment in a trilogy of movies intended to adapt the final arcs from Koyoharu Gotouge’s original manga. According to Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini, the second Infinity Castle movie is currently in “active production,” though a release date has not yet been announced.

Crunchyroll itself has undergone quite a few changes over the past year. The anime streaming service quietly removed its free ad-supported streaming tier late last year before hiking prices this past March. More recently, the service announced that it will be restricting access to its official merch storefront, the Crunchyroll Store, to Mega and Ultimate Fan subscribers.

On that note, the Demon Slayer movie is releasing on Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow, on July 29, but only in Japan. The alignment of that date with the streaming release does not seem like a coincidence, so here’s hoping we hear more about a (widely available) DVD release in North America soon.

The company is trying to stabilize the spacecraft using back-up systems, before NASA will decide if the mission can continue.

This is the first time the space agency has hired a private company to lift one of its space telescopes to a higher orbit, allowing the observatory to continue operations beyond its expected lifespan.

The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory was launched in 2004, with the ability to swiftly point at ephemeral space events like gamma ray bursts. The spacecraft has been pulled back toward Earth and needs to be pushed back up to a higher orbit to continue doing its job.

The LINK spacecraft was launched into space on July 3 on board a Northrop Grumman Pegasus rocket. Over the past several weeks, flight controllers have worked to commission the spacecraft, activating its various systems before it heads off to rendezvous with Swift.

However, the spacecraft suffered issues controlling itself and began spinning over the weekend. According to NASA, the spinning has resulted in “sporadic communications” with the satellite, likely because its antenna flips away from the planet. Two of the three reaction wheels that control the spacecraft’s alignment have failed, and there are problems with one of the spacecraft’s thruster systems.

Flight controllers are working to recover the spacecraft using another set of thrusters on the spacecraft to slow the spin, and they said in a statement that “we have already begun this series of burns and are seeing the intended effect.” Katalyst told TechCrunch that “this remains an active mission, and we continue to move forward with plans to rendezvous with Swift.”

Katalyst’s Kieran Wilson, the principal investigator for the mission, told reporters ahead of the mission that the spacecraft had been built incredibly quickly because of the urgent need to raise Swift in the next few months.

“All this is challenging and risky,” he said at the time. “There’re a lot of spacecraft that have had far longer development cycles with far more funding behind them that have failed for mundane reasons.”

Katalyst raised a $12 million round in June to help support this mission, backed by investors Fortitude Ventures and Geodesic Capital. The company has also won funding from the U.S. military, which is interested in a dynamic vehicle that can service satellites or surveil rival spacecraft.
