This is an expansion of a limited rollout, announced in April, which involved about 50 mortgage lenders, according to a Sept. 3 post on X from Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees Fannie and Freddie.

For consumers, the significance is that VantageScore 4.0 uses data points that a classic FICO score doesn't consider, such as rent payments — which could help some homebuyers qualify for a mortgage or get a better interest rate on their loan, experts say.

About a third of mortgage denials for primary home purchases with conventional loans in 2025 were due to a lack of credit history, according to Zillow's analysis of 2025 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data.

Another newer credit score model, FICO 10T, which uses similar alternative data, is expected to be approved for use in mortgages by FHFA in the coming months. Separately, the Federal Housing Administration will begin insuring mortgages underwritten with VantageScore 4.0 and FICO 10T starting on Jan. 1.

FHFA may reduce credit report requirements

Additionally, Pulte said on his Sept. 3 X post that FHFA is "seriously considering" reducing the number of credit reports and scores needed for lenders to evaluate a potential homebuyer to two and, the following day in a separate X post, said the agency is "also studying" the use of a single credit report in the mortgage application process. The agency did not respond to CNBC's request for more information.

Currently, lenders are required to do a so-called tri-merge, which involves getting data about a mortgage applicant from all three large credit-reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Because there are differences in the credit scores that each firm provides, lenders typically use the middle score in their calculation.

While a bi-merge, as it's called, potentially could reduce the cost of pulling credit reports — which has risen sharply in the past several years — it would create a new problem, said John Ulzheimer, a credit expert and president of The Ulzheimer Group in Atlanta.

"Not all credit reports are the same, and [the lender] may miss something by not pulling all three," Ulzheimer said.

How rent, utility data may help some borrowers

VantageScore is a joint venture owned by Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. It was created in 2006 as a competitor to the FICO score, which has been around since 1989.

Both brands use similar data to compute your number — including outstanding debt, payment history and other financial tidbits that help predict whether you'll repay what you borrow. The most familiar versions of both VantageScore and FICO result in a score that falls on a scale of 300 to 850; the higher, the better.

VantageScore 4.0 differs from the classic FICO score in several ways, including by considering rent and utility payments when evaluating a person's creditworthiness. The idea is that some consumers may consistently pay those bills on time, and their score could benefit from that — especially if they don't have much else on their credit report, such as credit cards or an installment loan, for instance.

Of course, if you're late or behind on your rent, your VantageScore 4.0 could suffer.

Not all credit reports are the same, and [the lender] may miss something by not pulling all three.

John Ulzheimer

President of The Ulzheimer Group

Nevertheless, for homebuyers with thin credit histories, having an alternative credit score used could mean a greater chance of getting more favorable mortgage terms.

"I do think it's going to be a benefit to buyers in terms of not just being able to be qualified, but also what interest rate bucket they fall in," said Stephen Rinaldi, president and founder of the Rinaldi Group, a mortgage broker based near Philadelphia.

"Sometimes the VantageScore is higher and sometimes lower [than FICO], but having two options as opposed to one option, there's more likelihood of approval," Rinaldi said.

While a potential homebuyer can ask their mortgage broker or lender to check their VantageScore 4.0 as well as their classic FICO score, it may not be easy for consumers to check those scores on their own ahead of time.

FICO offers a subscription service for $29.95 or $39.95 per month, both of which include classic FICO scores, as well as FICO 10T. VantageScore 4.0 is available for free if you have an account through Synchrony Bank, a retail credit card provider. Zillow's rental application program, which costs $35, also offers access.

Most rental payments don't get reported

Additionally, while VantageScore 4.0 considers rental history, most of that data doesn't make its way to credit companies for use in any score.

The share of consumers whose rent payments are reported to credit reporting agencies rose to 13% last year from 11% in 2024, according to a TransUnion report that was based on a survey of 2,006 adults in March 2025.

There are about 46.8 million renter-occupied households in the U.S., according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

watch now

Some property managers use software to feed data to one or more credit bureaus. Renters may also sign up for a rent-reporting service that will pass the information along, Ulzheimer said. Those services may come with a monthly fee of about $10, although some large property managers may offer it for free to renters who want to participate.

'Trended data' can help or hurt your score

There's another metric that is used in VantageScore 4.0 and generally is already available to the credit-reporting companies: so-called trended data.

This is based on a person's credit behavior over time — usually the last 24 months. For instance, a credit card company typically reports to the credit-reporting companies the balance, the minimum monthly payment required and the actual payments made over that stretch of time, Ulzheimer said.

While trended data is already included in consumer credit reports, it has not been incorporated into the classic FICO score used in mortgages.

This information is valuable to lenders, Ulzheimer said, in determining who is a "transactor" — a credit card user who routinely pays off their balance — and who is a "revolver" — someone who carries a balance from month to month, which can be a riskier borrower for a lender.

For consumers, this means managing credit card debt over time will be important if they plan to apply for a mortgage, he said. %!s()

The finding could have implications far beyond a single eruption. Scientists are increasingly interested in ways to reduce methane in the atmosphere because the gas is a major contributor to global warming and disappears much faster than carbon dioxide. Understanding how nature can accelerate that process could eventually help researchers develop new strategies for slowing near-term warming.

A Strange Signal in the Volcano Cloud

Researchers made the discovery using satellite observations of the huge plume created by the eruption. They detected exceptionally high levels of formaldehyde, a chemical that provided an important clue about what was happening inside the cloud.

Formaldehyde is produced briefly during the chemical reactions that break methane apart in the atmosphere. Because it survives for only a short time, unusually large amounts of formaldehyde can act as a chemical fingerprint showing that methane destruction is actively taking place.

"When we analyzed the satellite images, we were surprised to see a cloud with a record-high concentration of formaldehyde. We were able to track the cloud for 10 days, all the way to South America. Because formaldehyde only exists for a few hours, this showed that the cloud must have been destroying methane continuously for more than a week," explains Dr. Maarten van Herpen from Acacia Impact Innovation BV, first author of the study, which was published in Nature Communications.

"It is known that volcanoes emit methane during eruptions, but until now it was not known that volcanic ash is also capable of partially cleaning up this pollution," he adds.

Daily Emissions From 2 Million Cows

According to the researchers' calculations, the volcano released around 300 gigagrams (Gg) of methane during the eruption. That is roughly equivalent to the annual methane emissions of more than two million cows.

At the same time, the plume removed approximately 900 megagrams (Mg) of methane per day, an amount comparable to the daily emissions of two million cows.

Salt, Sunlight and Unexpected Chemistry

The researchers believe the explanation involves an unusual combination of volcanic ash, seawater and sunlight. The basic chemistry was first identified by scientists in 2023, although in a very different environment.

In that earlier research, scientists found that Saharan dust carried across the Atlantic Ocean can mix with sea salt released by breaking waves. Together, these materials form tiny airborne particles called iron salt aerosols. Aerosols are microscopic particles suspended in the atmosphere.

When sunlight strikes those particles, chemical reactions can release chlorine atoms. Chlorine is highly reactive, allowing it to attack methane molecules and help break them apart. The discovery added a previously underappreciated process to scientists' understanding of chemistry in the troposphere, the lowest major layer of Earth's atmosphere where most weather occurs.

"What is new -- and completely surprising -- is that the same mechanism appears to occur in a volcanic plume high up in the stratosphere, where the physical conditions are entirely different," says Professor Matthew Johnson from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, one of the researchers behind both discoveries.

The Hunga Tonga eruption created unusually favorable conditions for this chemistry. Because the volcano erupted beneath the ocean, it blasted enormous quantities of salty seawater upward along with volcanic ash. Some of that material reached the stratosphere, the atmospheric layer above the troposphere.

Researchers propose that sunlight striking this mixture produced highly reactive chlorine. Those chlorine atoms then reacted with methane in the plume, helping destroy some of the methane released during the eruption. The extraordinary amounts of formaldehyde detected from space provided evidence that this process was taking place.

Why Destroying Methane Matters

Methane currently accounts for about one third of global warming. Although it is far less abundant than carbon dioxide, methane traps heat extremely efficiently. Over a 20-year period, methane is about 80 times as potent as CO2.

There is also an important difference between the two greenhouse gases. Methane typically remains in the atmosphere for about 10 years before chemical reactions remove it, while a portion of carbon dioxide can influence the climate for far longer.

That relatively short atmospheric lifetime makes methane an especially attractive target for rapid climate action. Cutting methane emissions today could begin producing a noticeable climate benefit within about a decade.

For that reason, researchers sometimes describe methane reduction as an "emergency brake" on climate change, because rapidly lowering methane levels could help reduce warming during the coming decades and potentially lower the risk of crossing dangerous climate tipping points.

Reducing methane, however, is not a substitute for reducing carbon dioxide. Long-term temperature stabilization still requires major reductions in CO2 emissions.

Could Scientists Copy What the Volcano Did?

The discovery could also provide inspiration for researchers and companies investigating ways to accelerate methane destruction deliberately.

One emerging area of climate research focuses on atmospheric methane removal. Instead of only preventing new methane emissions, scientists are exploring whether chemical processes could safely increase the rate at which methane already in the atmosphere is broken down.

Hunga Tonga may have provided a dramatic natural demonstration of one possible mechanism.

A major challenge, however, is proving that any proposed technology actually removes methane. Atmospheric methane is spread across enormous areas, making relatively small changes difficult to measure with confidence.

"How do you prove that methane has been removed from the atmosphere? How do you know your method works? It's very difficult. But here we address that problem by showing that methane breakdown can in fact be observed using satellites," says Dr. Jos de Laat from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, senior author of the study.

Changing the Methane Budget

The findings may also force scientists to reconsider calculations of the global methane budget.

The methane budget is essentially an accounting system for the gas. Scientists estimate how much methane enters the atmosphere from sources such as wetlands, agriculture, fossil fuels and geological activity, then compare that with the amount removed through atmospheric chemistry and other processes.

According to the researchers, atmospheric dust has not previously been fully incorporated into those calculations. If volcanic ash and other forms of mineral dust can accelerate methane destruction, estimates of how methane moves through the atmosphere may need to be adjusted.

"We now know that atmospheric dust -- for example from a volcanic eruption -- impacts the methane budget, meaning the budget of how much methane is added to the atmosphere and how much is removed. Because dust has not previously been taken into account, it is important that we correct the data on which these estimates are based," says Matthew Johnson.

Satellites Watched the Chemistry Unfold

The researchers used measurements from TROPOMI, an advanced instrument aboard the European Space Agency's Sentinel-5P satellite. TROPOMI scans Earth's atmosphere every day, monitoring gases associated with air pollution and climate change.

Detecting formaldehyde inside a volcanic plume in the stratosphere, however, pushed the instrument well beyond the conditions for which its standard measurements are normally designed.

"Retrieving formaldehyde from TROPOMI in a stratospheric volcanic plume is far outside the instrument's standard operating conditions -- we had to carefully correct the satellite's sensitivity for the unusual altitude of the signal and account for interference from the high sulfur dioxide concentrations. Getting these corrections right was essential to confirm that what we were seeing was real," said Dr. Isabelle De Smedt, Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy.

Those corrections allowed the researchers to conclude that the unusually strong formaldehyde signal was genuine and could be used to track methane destruction within the volcanic cloud.

A Possible Blueprint From Nature

The team believes the discovery could encourage engineers to investigate whether the natural chemistry observed after Hunga Tonga can be reproduced safely and effectively.

"It's an obvious idea for industry to try to replicate this natural phenomenon -- but only if it can be proven to be safe and effective. Our satellite method could offer a way to help figure out how humans might slow global warming," concludes Matthew Johnson.

Any attempt to manipulate atmospheric chemistry would require careful study to understand potential unintended effects. But Hunga Tonga provides researchers with an unusual real-world example of methane destruction occurring on a huge scale, along with a possible way to monitor the process from space.

“I am appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine,” his statement reads. “The suffering and pain caused on both sides is a human tragedy. There are too many wars across the world causing immeasurable pain, none of which should be tolerated. Macklemore asked to join my tour last year and I agreed, because I respect him as an artist. As with all my support acts, I agree that they play a setlist of their choosing.

“After Macklemore’s performances at my New Jersey shows, venues on my upcoming tour dates communicated that they would pull the shows if he was still supporting. I was informed that this stance was based on how Macklemore conveyed part of his message during his performance, rather than on everything that was said. I spoke with the venues at length all week to try and build a bridge. One of those people was Robert Kraft. I was also involved in direct talks with promoters along with activists on both sides to try and find a mutual resolution for all, but the venue’s and promoter’s decision was final.

“Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine. Macklemore’s contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me.

“I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.

“I have always used my platform and music to bring people from all backgrounds and cultures together and this won’t ever change. Those who have been to one of my shows will know that they are about unity, joy, escapism, love, and a place for everyone to feel welcome.

“I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have them, and it doesn’t mean I don’t care. Nor does it mean I don’t support causes in my own, personal way.

“There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics – my audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds. Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum. I respect Macklemore’s strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes. However, there is room for multiple approaches to the same end: peace. I choose to use my fame and platform to be a place of safety and sanctuary, to maintain diplomacy and keep conversations open, not closed. If we only focus on shouting the loudest, nothing will ever change. There are different approaches to being an advocate for change.

“I have spent this week trying to build bridges, to find a solution and unfortunately, was unable to do so. I know who I am, both as a person and as an artist, and those who know my heart know my values too. – Ed.”

His statement follows lengthy comments on Monday from Macklemore, in which he accused billionaire New England Patriots owner of rallying fellow stadium owners to ban the rapper from the tour due to his comments, and a response from Kraft; ironically, the upshot of both comments are remarkably similar calls for peace and understanding, although they differ widely on other issues. The tour’s promoter, the the Messina Touring Group, announced early Monday that Macklemore had been ejected from the tour.

Sheeran had not previously commented on the incidents, in which Macklemore unexpectedly told audiences that he wanted people in Gaza and the occupied West Bank to know they had not been forgotten. “A big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place is so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: ‘Free Palestine,’” Macklemore said, to a decidedly mixed response from the crowd. “I said, ‘Free Palestine!’ I want those words to be loud and clear, so that people all the way in Gaza to the occupied West Bank know that we have not forgotten about them.”

The rapper then sang his song “Hind’s Hall” as images from the destruction in Gaza were shown on the screens inside the stadium. The song is about the pro-Palestine demonstrators who occupied a building at Columbia University after the murder of Hind Raja. Macklemore made similar comments on the second night; it seems likely he was aware that the New York metropolitan area is home to nearly 2 million Jewish residents, the largest population in the world outside Israel.

Messina Touring Group, promoter of the U.S. leg of Sheeran’s Loop Tour, said in a statement Monday: “As the concert promoter for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, we have been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup, which would result in the cancellation of the tour and impact hundreds of thousands of fans. After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates.”

Macklemore was on the bill to perform at eight of the 10 shows Sheeran has left on his stadium tour, which will resume on Sept. 19 in Philadelphia. The rapper was scheduled to perform at venues such as Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and more.

Macklemore’s politically-themed set at the Sept. 4 concert sparked a petition from the Israeli American Council, which demanded the rapper be removed from the remaining dates on the Loop tour. The petition read: “This was an Ed Sheeran concert – not a political rally, not a protest, and not an activist event. The issue is not whether Macklemore has the right to hold political views. The question is where the line should be drawn when an opening act uses a global concert platform to advance a one-sided political agenda.”

Macklemore’s speech went viral across social media and generated a second wave of headlines after the singer Pink reposted a call for the rapper to be dropped from Sheeran’s tour. %!s()
