Based on the popular horror video game series, “Resident Evil” tells a fully original story with some nods to the original source material that fans will love. Abrams plays a bumbling medical courier who finds out his girlfriend is pregnant, but agrees to one last delivery before heading home. He must make his way to a hospital in Raccoon City (which is ground zero for the zombie outbreak in the games) to drop off a mysterious package, but the snowy drive is far from easy. Almost immediately, he hits a strange woman with his car, then buckles her in and starts driving her to the hospital without realizing she’s slowly turning into a zombie. They get pulled over by a cop and things quickly go awry. Bryan is able to escape to a nearby farmhouse, but the woman doesn’t stop pursuing him for the entire movie.

Bryan finds a shotgun at the farm to defend himself, but he realizes the undead creatures will stop at nothing to kill him. After blasting apart the woman and an infected farmer, their bodies fuse together with stringy tendrils from inside each of them. Bryan books it out of there and gets picked up by some scientists from the Umbrella Corporation (an evil institution from the games) who explain that the package he’s delivering contains an antidote to the zombie virus.

Along the way, Bryan gets bit by a zombie but hides the wound, which slowly infects him. As his condition worsens, he makes it to the Raccoon City hospital, but he doesn’t get the chance to use the antidote. He transforms into a gigantic, tentacled monstrosity in the Umbrella Corporation lab and rips apart the scientists trying to save the world. With their bodies fused to his own, the monstrous Bryan roars atop the hospital as a military helicopter takes aim at him.

With Variety, Abrams discusses how he transformed into the monster, the cold and messy shooting conditions he endured and the one scene the “Resident Evil” team couldn’t allow him to film.

How did you find the right sound for Bryan’s scream? You really go all out, and it’s played for laughs but also works for a horror movie. Is it similar to your real scream?

There wasn’t a method behind that. It’s just letting all inhibitions down and not trying to look or sound cool and just letting it come out. I can’t tell you that it was weeks of labored work trying to figure it out. I don’t know the last time a scream naturally came out, so I’m not really sure. Whatever it is is what felt right, especially in the moment for the character. It was something where you didn’t know what was gonna what come out. You don’t want to know. It’s better to just like feel it and let whatever happens happen.

If Bryan isn’t screaming then he’s usually muttering “fuck!” under his breath. Are you muttering or talking to yourself like that in real life?

I don’t know if I can say I’m muttering “fuck, fuck” all the time. It was relatively easy thinking about the situation that you’re in at the time. In my daily life, god, that would mean something was really wrong if you did that all the time in your regular life. Those are signs that things are not going well. Please, if that’s happening, something needs to change.

I was not expecting you to turn into a monster at the end of the movie. What was your first reaction to reading that surprising moment in the script?

That’s what I love about Zach’s work. He’s willing to take those risks and kill off the person that you’re following the whole time — and not just that, have them ruin everything that they were just fighting for. It definitely was surprising, and also tragic. Everything that this character went through, the change that he has, how he feels with his girlfriend and all this sacrifice is essentially for nothing. It tells the story of why this virus got out and continued to go out and that there was this possibility of it being fixed. I think it’s a cool origin story.

How much of your monster form was practical vs. CGI and other special effects?

A lot of it was capturing it. It would be hard to build a suit like that. It was kind of a mixture. It’s definitely me, and there’s definitely some stuff they put on my face. I don’t know how they would add all the other different people on me and stuff like that. I don’t know what they fully keep as you or not. But we definitely went through the actions of it.

What kind of direction was Cregger giving you during the monster fight at the end? What was going through your head?

What’s going through your head is I look like a fucking idiot right now. It’s so funny because the thing with all that stuff is you can feel dumb, but the less you commit to it, the dumber you look. So actually, the more you commit to it, the more people are just like, “Whoa, that looks cool.” But you know, “More monster.” He would say that a lot. “More roar. Scarier. Monster more. Keep monstering. Don’t stop monstering. Come on, imagine you’re a big, scary monster.” I don’t know, I’m fucking making shit up right now. It was fun. I can’t remember specific notes. A lot of it was just playing around in in this open space and imagining stuff.

The movie ends with Bryan facing off against a military helicopter. Do you have an idea of what happens to him after? Is that something you’d want to see explored in another movie?

I don’t know. I’m not sure. I really don’t know. Whatever you want, you want it to be best for the story, and I love Zach. But beyond that, I just don’t know. I don’t want to put in some sort of theories about things.

The other big part of the movie is Bryan’s relationship with his pregnant girlfriend Michelle, who we never see in person. Who voiced her, and did you ever meet in person or was it just a voice on the phone?

I think that’s Zach’s wife Sara [Paxton]. We had someone else at the time. She wasn’t where we were shooting at the time, so it’d be too hard to try to patch a call and then it drops out and gets unreliable. We had someone else reading it, but I think he knew he wanted to put Sara in as a fun kind of Easter egg.

Did you create any more backstory for his and Michele’s relationship than what we see in the movie?

Yeah, to some degree. There was a coming up with that just for myself, but I don’t know how deeply Zach and I went into it at the time. But it’s something that you need to know to make a full person that feels like there’s dimensions behind what you’re seeing.

How cold was it shooting in Prague?

Everyday is kind of up and down, but there were days where it was definitely quite cold. I don’t mind that stuff though. There were day where it was this kind of rain that would then freeze to your jacket. So then you’d be covered in this outer layer of ice. But I enjoy that stuff. There were some days where we thankfully got real snow, which was pretty awesome, like fully blanketed. The farmhouse stuff is mostly actual snow that was happening. The temperature was also all in Celsius, which I cannot remember. There were a couple days that everyone was particularly having a tough time. But, whatever, man, it’s just temperature.

How do you push through the cold when you’re shooting and not let it affect you?

You just feel it. You let it be a part of the thing. But like I said, it’s not really a big deal. It’s just cold. You know who was concerned was the woman in the dress playing the pedestrian. If there’s anyone to be concerned it was her because she had to do scenes where she was having to lay down in the snow. She was really a killer and not complaining and getting it done. If there’s anyone to pat on the back, it’s her because everyone else got to be fully clothed and not in a summer dress.

The other thing that stood out to me was all the running you do. Did you train at all to be able to run like that in the snow?

I don’t know if this is the way to do it, but you want the person to not be a runner. I want to see the person struggling with it. So no, there wasn’t a particular kind of running prep because I feel like it’s just more interesting to watch someone that’s out of breath and you’re like, “I don’t know if they can do this.”

What was the messiest and bloodiest scene you had to shoot?

Definitely once we got down to the maternity ward stuff. At that point, you’re completely soaked in this blood and this floor that’s completely blood. People were getting taken out constantly or almost going down. At that point in that movie, there’s not a part of me that’s not completely covered in blood and goo.

How did you shoot the jump down to the ground from the farmhouse?

That is one of the only ones that we had a stunt team come in and do. Other than that, it felt it was important to do everything. That was one where, well, I don’t know what to say they just wouldn’t let me do it. But our great stunt guy that did it, he didn’t have any wires on him or anything. He just took the fall. I remember him afterwards saying he really hit his tailbone pretty hard. %!s()

Gardner added that while her and her colleague's badges were disabled, an MS NOW producer was still able to scan her badge to get in, though she was not given an explanation as to why the producer's badge still worked.

CNN reporter Betsy Klein said a Secret Service agent told her her badge had been deactivated.

Later on Saturday morning, Politico said its reporter Cheyenne Haslett was denied entry and Secret Service revoked her pass.

All three outlets have spoken out against the decision, accusing Trump of violating their constitutional rights to free speech and freedom of the press.

An MS NOW spokesperson said in a statement that the White House "belongs to the American people and the decisions made inside are funded by our tax dollars".

MS NOW said it "intends to take any and all steps necessary to defend our First Amendment rights and the essential role of independent journalism in our democracy".

Politico Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Greenberger said in an internal email, shared in the outlet's Playbook newsletter, that the company stands by its reporters and will "vigorously defend" their First Amendment rights.

And CNN said, "We have a right under the US Constitution to do our reporting without hindrance or interference from the government and this ban is an illegal assault on this fundamental right."

In his announcement, Trump did not mention specific stories or reporting from the three outlets that prompted the move, but later said "it's really just cumulative stories over the last few years".

Trump added that there "may be others to join them", but has not given a directive banning additional news outlets. When later asked by a reporter what he meant by others to come, Trump responded: "Others to come in terms of fake news? Well, you know, the New York Times is fake news, the Washington Post is fake news."

Several groups dedicated to the freedom of the press have called out Trump's White House ban as illegal and unconstitutional.

A major group that provides legal services to the media - the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press - said it expected Trump's ban to be struck down quickly by the courts because it was "flatly unconstitutional".

"The First Amendment is clear that once the White House invites in some journalists, it can't ban others because it doesn't like their reporting," said Bruce Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which provides legal services to the media.

It's the latest in a series of moves by the administration to target media outlets Trump says are critical of him, including legal action against US and international outlets like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the BBC.

Some of the lawsuits have resulted in media organisations agreeing to pay multimillion dollar settlements. Trump's lawsuit against the BBC is ongoing.

Development of what was supposed to be called the Porsche 969 (in production form) started in 1984 with a release date scheduled for 1990. The history of this cocktail of a Porsche gets interesting as you closely inspect its derriere. As you may know, Porsche never really sold 911s with anything other than a flat-6, albeit in naturally aspirated or forced-induction forms.

According to Stuttcars, Porsche had a lofty 365-horsepower initial target for the "Junior 959," which engineers could've easily met had they used the 959's twin-turbo flat-six motor. As budgetary constraints decreed otherwise, the team had to get creative, toying with the idea of a turbocharged V6 and even an in-house-developed V8. In the end, however, an Audi-sourced water-cooled V8 proved cost-effective while meeting the project's many demands. Apparently, Porsche was struggling at the time, and the financial crash of '87 also didn't help much in keeping the project alive. And so, there sits a "Black Bomber" somewhere in the Porsche Museum that is the only surviving prototype of a 911 with a V8 hanging behind its rear axle.

More about the 965 Black Bomber prototype

The "Black Bomber," or Prototype L7, to be more specific, was primarily used for radiator testing and, according to CarThrottle, played its part in helping the 911 go water-cooled many years later with the 996 generation. Worth pointing out is that if it weren't for the financial woes at the time, the 965 would've gone on to become the first fully water-cooled Porsche 911 (the 959 had water-cooled heads). In fact, during the development phase, water-cooling the entire flat-six was a proposed solution to Project 965's power problems.

As for the paint, Porsche chose to "matte black" the test mule because fancy camos weren't necessarily all that common back in the day, and moreover, this was a test car that drove on public roads. As you can see with the hidden NACA ducts, Porsche was being incredibly secretive. In terms of the protype itself, what you will find is a bit of G-series, a bit of 964, and a lot of 959. Specifically, while the test mule's profile looks very 959-esque, if you inspect closely, the front bumper has an uncanny resemblance to that of a 928, while the mirrors and the overall mid-section look very much like the G-series. The rear, however, has 959 written all over it, with the integrated spoiler being, unmistakably, the standout item.

Not only was air suspension a proposed option for the 965, but Porsche also had plans to incorporate the dual-clutch transmission from its 956 and 962 racecars. A total of circa 2,500 cars were planned, each priced at 180,000 Deutsche Mark. For context, that was less than half of what a 959 cost at the time. %!s()

Xbox may start to reward players for obtaining all achievements in a game

When players unlock all trophies on PlayStation, they receive a Platinum Trophy. On Xbox, players earn achievements instead, but there is currently no reward for getting all of a game's achievements. This might all be about to change, as an Xbox Insider reported that he recently saw a "Mythic Achievement" filter.

Players in the Xbox Insider program get access to beta features while they're still in testing, before the full release. It's thanks to these Insiders that we've gotten to know so much about the disc-to-digital program. Insider-only features aren't available to the wider public at first, so Insiders can test and help Xbox improve them.

Recently, an Insider in the Alpha Skip-Ahead tier was going through their achievements and selected the Filters option. They noticed that the Game Completion filters had an option for "Completed/Incomplete Mythic Achievement." Enabling this filter made only the games they had 100% completed appear on their achievements page. While Xbox has made no official announcement or blog post about Mythic Achievements, this makes it seem like they are Xbox's Platinum Trophy equivalent.

Xbox Alpha Skip-Ahead Insiders may have access to a Platinum Trophy equivalent

At the moment, Xbox has not publicly announced this addition to its achievement system or confirmed when it will be widely released. Polygon could also not find this filter when checking on our own Xbox Series X. We have contacted Xbox to confirm whether Mythic Achievements are in the works. If we get a response, we will update this post with new information. %!s()

Ratcliffe said the UK was in decline because of a combination of high taxes and high immigration.

He has previously apologised for "offending some people" with his language after saying the UK had been "colonised by immigrants".

At the time, in February, United responded by saying the club "prides itself" on being "inclusive", while BBC Sport cited a source familiar with the Glazer family as understanding the club's majority shareholders were "horrified" by his initial remarks and saw them as showing "disregard for their ownership".

"We condemned those comments then," said the Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club (MUMSC) on Saturday, in a statement of no confidence in the club's ownership.

"He [Ratcliffe] subsequently apologised for his choice of language. We hoped a lesson had been learned. Clearly, it has not.

"This week, Sir Jim has again placed immigration and people receiving benefits at the centre of his explanation for Britain's problems, arguing that nobody is 'tough enough' to deal with either.

"We find these latest comments deeply disappointing and completely unacceptable."

Ratcliffe campaigned for a Leave vote in the 2016 European Union referendum and has been a tax resident in Monaco since 2020.

He acquired a 27.7% stake in Man Utd in 2024, and has since restructured the organisation, overseeing 450 redundancies, overhauling senior management and sacking two managers.

MUMSC highlighted that United's "players, staff, stewards, security teams and supporters come from different countries, cultures, ethnicities, religions and backgrounds".

The group added: "Manchester United would not be Manchester United without them. That diversity isn't a weakness of Manchester United. It is part of Manchester United."

In the statement, the MUMSC also called on the Glazer family to go.

MUMSC said its members were among the club's fans who hoped Ratcliffe's arrival "would finally signal meaningful change" after the Glazer family had "presided over Manchester United's decline".

However, the group pointed to "higher ticket prices" and "a stadium allowed to deteriorate", along with "a football team that continues to fall further behind where Manchester United should be", among their concerns which "now extend beyond the pitch".

Manchester United entered the weekend sitting 13th in the Premier League after gaining four points from their first four Premier League games, and they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday with a 3-2 home defeat by Brighton.

"After years of decline, broken promises and repeated failure, Manchester United Muslim Supporters' Club has lost confidence in the current ownership structure of Manchester United Football Club," MUMSC concluded.

"Enough is enough. It is time for change. The Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe must go." %!s()
