The lawsuit filed in San Francisco federal court on Monday names OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, as defendants. It is seeking damages to fund recovery efforts in the province after the February attack, as well as an order directing changes to the way the company handles ChatGPT conversations that could lead to violence.

Nine people, primarily children, were killed in the school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The shooter, Jesse Van ⁠Rootselaar, had been flagged by the company’s safety team after her conversations about gun violence, but the company did not alert police.

Altman published a letter ​to the community saying he was “deeply sorry” OpenAI had not contacted ‌law enforcement. He promised reforms, but never ‌followed through, despite efforts from British Columbia’s attorney general to engage, the lawsuit says.

The school where the shooting took place is in the process of being ‌demolished, and the province has been forced to absorb the costs of a replacement school, mental health care and other effects of the shooting, according to the lawsuit.

A spokesperson for OpenAI, Drew Pusateri, called the Tumbler Ridge shooting an unspeakable tragedy. “OpenAI remains committed to working collaboratively with government and law enforcement officials, and continuing to advance our ongoing safety work.”

British Columbia’s lawsuit comes after more than 30 family members of victims and others affected by the attack filed lawsuits in California, accusing the company of opting out of a chance to prevent ‌the shooting.

Van Rootselaar shot her mother and stepbrother at home before killing an educational assistant and five students aged 12 and 13 at her former school on 10 February, according to police. Van Rootselaar, who was 18, then died by ​suicide.

Van Rootselaar’s interactions with ChatGPT were first flagged by the company in June 2025. Safety team members recommended contacting police, but Altman and other OpenAI leadership overruled them, the lawsuit says, citing OpenAI whistleblowers who spoke to the Wall Street Journal in the wake of the shooting.

The shooter’s account was deactivated, but she was able to get a new account and continue using the platform to plan her attack.

After publication of the Wall Street Journal article, the company said the ⁠account was flagged by systems that identify “misuses of our models in furtherance of violent activities”, but the issues did ​not meet its internal criteria for reporting to law ​enforcement.

The lawsuit comes after a series of ​cases against OpenAI have been filed in US state and federal courts in recent months over claims ChatGPT facilitated violence, ​including lawsuits related to a mass ‌shooting at Florida State ​University last year.

In June, Florida became the ​first state to sue OpenAI over safety risks, accusing the company of misrepresenting the safety of its ChatGPT platform, which the lawsuit said had harmed children by providing information to school shooters, offering guidance on self-harm and addicting young users.

OpenAI, which has denied the claims, has said it trains its models to refuse requests that could “meaningfully enable violence”, and notifies law enforcement when conversations suggest “an imminent and credible risk of harm to others”. %!s()

The report finds sea level rise from global heating will have the greatest effects on coastal and low-lying areas, while hotter temperatures could reduce productivity of workers, affect agricultural crop yields and damage tourism. “Over the next 40 years, increasingly frequent and severe natural disasters will pose a significant economic risk,” it finds.

The deputy director of Melbourne Climate Futures at the University of Melbourne, Assoc Prof Ben Neville, said that while the report “connects demographic trends with threats on the horizon, it is negligent in ignoring the economic damage that the changing climate already is and will increasingly bring in the next 40 years”.

The report mentions treasury modelling which finds that a disorderly approach to the net zero transition result in a cumulative $2tn hit to the economy by 2050.

“As the geopolitics show, we are clearly on this disorderly pathway,” Neville said, adding that – as highlighted by the national climate risk assessment – current modelling methods significantly underestimate economic impacts “as they don’t incorporate the recognised complex impacts of climate change”.

“Not integrating this perspective when forecasting the next 40 years is a very disappointing miss, illustrating a government that just doesn’t seem to get it on climate change, all while it co-leads the world towards the next global Cop negotiations in Turkey.”

Sarah Wheeler, a professor of water economics at Flinders University said that the issue of water scarcity was overlooked in the report. “One of the largest impacts [of climate change] will be on water security issues, with higher water variability meaning increased probability of more damaging flooding and severe droughts,” she said.

“Without urgent action to address and manage these issues, the ramifications on Australian productivity and wellbeing will be huge.”

Climate activist Anjali Sharma questioned the report’s utility. “Young people won’t be looking at this report to know their future. What use is a report forecasting the next forty years by a government failing to tackle the greatest challenge of our time?”

However, the report does highlight the benefits of embracing renewable energy.

Prof Frank Jotzo, director of the Centre for Climate and Energy Policy at the Australian National University, said it “correctly points out the many economic advantages that Australia will reap from the transition to renewable energy, and from future clean energy-based export industries”.

“The national vision of renewable energy based exports of green iron, green ammonia and carbon-neutral fuels is alive, despite some disappointment of early excitement not yet having translated into large investments.”

The executive director of policy for the Investor Group on Climate Change, Francesca Muskovic, said: “The government needs a laser focus on making sure datacentres’ growing electricity demand is aligned to and supports investment and rollout of new, firmed renewable energy.

“Runaway demand without securing a strong pipeline of additional, new clean energy supply will put immediate, acute pressure on the existing grid and could lead to increased energy prices for Australian households and businesses.” %!s()

One of King's most prophetic books was released in 1982 under the pen name Richard Bachman. The Running Man has a Simpsons-esque knack for predicting our future: a world where spectacle is wielded to influence the public and keep them in line.

While Edgar Wright put a modern spin on King's story in 2025, there's still something charming and surprisingly resonant in the extremely campy version that came out in 1987 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger at the height of his action-star powers. That version of The Running Man is now free to stream on YouTube, and it takes the real and somber concerns of King’s novel to hilarious (and believable) extremes.

What is The Running Man about?

Directed by Paul Michael Glaser, The Running Man opens with a helpful crawl in bright white letters over a red backdrop, laying out the vision of the future while establishing the film’s striking color palette.

The year is 2017, and the world’s economy has collapsed. The U.S. is a police state divided into paramilitary zones. To keep the people controlled and entertained, the state-owned network airs a reality TV show called The Running Man, where prisoners can earn their freedom if they survive attacks from some of the country’s most skilled assassins, called Stalkers. The show’s promise of freedom is, of course, a lie. No contestant has survived the game.

Ben Richards (Schwarzenegger) is a former cop who was framed by his unit after he refused to shoot an unarmed group of people, resulting in his imprisonment and the nickname The Butcher of Bakersfield. He escapes prison, finds some allies, and is hunted by the state. The Running Man’s host, Damon Killian (Richard Dawson, host of the real Family Feud), sees Ben as the perfect way to revive the show’s waning ratings. So the show's editors doctor footage to make him look like a ruthless killer and turn the audience against him.

Despair, but make it camp

If that all sounds grim, gritty, and self-serious… it's not. Glaser trades the despair that permeates the novel for camp, and it works.

In the book, Ben is a desperate father who signs up for the games to afford medicine for his sick daughter. Spoiler alert: Things don’t work out for Ben, and the novel ends with him finding no better option than to defiantly crash a plane into the TV networks’ headquarters. Glaser's ending is a lot more satisfying.

King has noted the tonal gap himself. In the introduction to his collection of pseudonymous novels titled The Bachman Books, the author described his version of Ben “as far from the Arnold Schwarzenegger character in the movie as you can get.”

Glaser’s film makes for an entirely different experience. The Stalkers are as entertaining as they are lethal, introducing themselves to a clapping studio audience like a twisted take on The Masked Singer: There's a chainsaw-wielding Stalker called Buzzsaw and an opera-singing one called Dynamo. Then there’s Subzero, who dresses like a hockey player as he chases contestants across an ice rink, slashing them with his stick and even treating one of them as a hockey puck.

While all of this is happening onstage, audience members take in all the gore by cheering and howling, dropping their own commentary as they self-righteously look down at the criminals. They fawn over Killian, the ultimate celebrity. They can even win money and prizes if they make the right bets.

“Here is Subzero. Now plain zero,” says Ben after taking out the Stalker. It’s one of the great Schwarzenegger deliveries, making it easy to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. But look at what surrounds the joke: a crowd that sneers at the condemned from the safety of the stands, a host worshiped like a star, and a network that plays with the truth to keep its audience entertained. Four decades later, a culture that values spectacle over truth and treats public humiliation as entertainment no longer looks like an exaggeration.

Despite the opposing tones, the core premise was King’s from the start. "The finest men in America don't run for President. They run for their lives," reads the novel’s tagline.

If you’re looking for higher fidelity to the source material, Edgar Wright’s The Running Man is a good option. But if you’re looking for ‘80s camp that turns King’s warning into a hilarious game-show spectacle that still hits hard, Glaser’s film is the right place to start. When a show like this feels so familiar, what else can you do but laugh?

Australia first restricted tobacco advertising in 1993, but the country's government updated nearly all of its regulations with the Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) Act 2023. According to Speedcafe, Motorsport Australia wasn't aware of the amended law until last month, even though it took effect in 2024. The Act featured "a prohibition on the display, publication, or promotion of any regulated tobacco product" on any car's livery. Previously, the law featured carve-outs for historic cars that competed with tobacco liveries before December 24, 1992.

Australia has long had touring car fever, with the decades-long rivalry between Ford and Holden as well as the country's marquee Bathurst 1000 known the world over. With that in mind, there are plenty of vintage Ford Falcons and Holden Toranas plastered with Marlboro, John Player Special, Benson & Hedges and Craven Mild logos still racing today. The owners are rightfully livid that the cars they worked so hard to preserve are no longer eligible to compete.

Fox Sports refusal made Motorsport Australia aware of amended law

Motorsport Australia changed its regulations after Fox Sports refused to air a Touring Car Masters race at Sydney Motorsport Park in August. Instead, viewers were treated to a replay of a recent Supercars race with the message: "We are unable to bring you [the] Touring Car Masters race due to legal [sic] reasons." Touring Cars Masters features touring cars that raced between 1963 and 1980, when the broadcast resolution was 576i. In a statement, the competition manager Dean Bryant said:

"Foxtel are simply protecting themselves from the lawsuit that would occur from them showing any race car footage that impinged the Australian Government anti-tobacco advertising legislation. Foxtel is not the enemy here."

"Supercars have commercial obligations to Foxtel and as such they can't afford to be involved should the Australian government or a trademark owner decide to take action against Foxtel for showing footage of cars in breach of the legislation. Supercars is not the enemy here!"

"Motorsport Australia is the second-to-last link in the legal chain here should the Australian Government or a trademark owner take action. Motorsport Australia is not the enemy here!"

"The last link in a massive legal chain here is the car owner!"

"Motorsport Australia and Supercars have done nothing more than protect everyone involved here from the real threat of action from trademark holders or government authorities."

It's clear the law needs to change. Tobacco advertising today is rightly banned because of the known harms caused by smoking and tobacco chewing. However, motorsport organizers shouldn't be forced by legislators to censor the sport's past. These historic racing cars aren't the focus of modern advertising campaigns. Funnily enough, Craven Mild was discontinued in the early 1980s. These machines are effectively being displayed in action within the confines of a living museum. %!s()

The charges, filed by prosecutors in a Cape Cod courthouse on Sept. 8, are reportedly connected to an incident that happened on May 23, 2025. The 20-year-old’s arraignment is set for Oct. 14.

The Bulwark wasn’t able to access additional records on the case, but the timeline appears to match a civil lawsuit filed in April against the streamer in Florida.

CBS 4 Miami previously reported that 18-year-old Alorah Ziva, whose real name is Aleksandra Vasilevna Mendoza, accused Peters of battery, fraud and sexual misconduct, according to the complaint. She alleged the influencer injected her with Aqualyx, a fat-dissolving substance not approved by the FDA, during a livestream in 2025 without her consent.

The lawsuit also accused Peters of nonconsensual sexual encounters at his parents’ home in Cape Cod while Mendoza, who said she was a minor at the time, was intoxicated.

In July, Peters filed a motion to dismiss several counts of the civil lawsuit.

In response to The Bulwark report, Peters’ rep wrote in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “Clavicular has not been physically served. As usual, the Bulwark is exaggerating the status of a case to boost traffic. We appreciate the Hollywood Reporter for fact checking.”

Later on Monday, Peters took to X to share a letter that he claimed Mendoza sent him after the alleged incident, appearing to thank him for “helping me as much as you have been.” The streamer also shared a video of Mendoza, where she appeared to call the Aqualyx injection “fun,” and said Peters was “super nice” and “sent me an Uber home right after.” It’s unclear when the video was filmed.

“Trying to get my attention in anyway possible, a lawsuit? Seriously… really petty of you,” Peters wrote in the X post.

He added in a separate post Monday, “Lmao was literally trying to work at Bacara as a bottle girl… how about dont finance cars you cant afford. Happens to all successful young men, people try to come for your money. Greed is evil.”

In another video that’s been reposted on X, allegedly from the 2025 livestream, Mendoza also appeared to say she was 18 years old at the time.

If convicted in the Massachusetts case, Peters faced a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison on the rape charge.

This isn’t the first time the streamer has faced criminal charges. In April, Peters was charged with unlawfully discharging a firearm after he was seen in a video shooting an alligator in the Florida Everglades.

At the time, Peters’s lawyer Jeffrey Neiman said the group was “following the instructions of a licensed airboat guide.” He added that the streamer “relied on that guidance” and that “no animals or people were harmed.”

Earlier this year, Peters was also hospitalized after appearing to overdose during a livestream in April. After being released the following day, he wrote on X, “Just got home, that was brutal. All of the substances are just a cope trying to feel neurotypical while being in public, but obviously that isn’t a real solution. The worst part of tonight was my face descending from the life support mask.” %!s()
