Who knows if the real Chris Hansen felt compelled to articulate that notion on the way to celebrity. Or, for that matter, whether the grandfather of the Reality-Vigilante-TV Industrial Complex ever felt the level of fear and self-loathing that radiates off Pattinson’s human-flop-sweat of a portrayal. Regardless, it’s a great buried-lede of a line, one of several that pop out in filmmaker Lance Oppenheim’s dramatization of To Catch a Predator‘s rise and moral free-fall.

Oppenheim cut his teeth making documentaries that he’s described as “stranger than ‘stranger than fiction,'” casting his lens on sperm donors (Spermworld), retirement communities (Some Kind of Heaven, The Paradise Next Door), and power struggles among cosplayers (Ren Faire). Uncomfortability is his comfort zone, and he’s picked an oddly perfect subject for his first narrative feature: manufactured nonfiction that presented as righteousness and doubled as queasy entertainment. To answer the eternal TCAP question: Yes, he sees how this looks. And he’d like you to take a long, hard look at how and why this show imprinted on our collective imagination, for better or worse.

Editor’s picks

This isn’t the first time in recent years that To Catch a Predator has been put in the hot seat — Robert Osit’s excellent documentary Predators examined the phenomenon from a number of viewpoints, and let Hansen speak for himself. Primetime takes a different tack, focusing on the show’s opportunity to level up as it’s hitting the peak of its popularity, and giving Pattinson a stage on which to rage. Performance is the through-line in more ways than one. When we meet this Hansen, he’s trying out variations of the “gotcha” moments he’ll soon spring on one of the perps; the way Pattinson pronounces the word “lubricant” as if he’s savoring each syllable immediately sets the tone. The actor has specialized in live-action gargoyles in his post-Twilight period, and he’s in his element here. This Hansen feels like a twitchy, touchy embodiment of true-crime ambition. Pattinson has the passive-aggressive cadence and trolling thunder of the real thing down pat, with more than a bit of fairy-tale troll thrown in for good measure. (You can understand why the actual TCAP host has, shall we say, a complicated relationship with this project.)

The show is already on its way to being a runaway hit when network head Jeff Zucker — played by Jeff Zucker, because he was available, so why not? — dangles a golden carrot in front of Hansen and his perpetually gum-snapping producer Andie Bender (Merritt Wever, pure perfection). He wants to give To Catch a Predator a primetime slot on Sunday, against ABC’s Lost. Hansen is over the moon. The level-up may not shut up that smug Stone Phillips (Bill Heck), who coos that he’ll watch “from Afghanistan,” where he’s about to do real reporting on a war. But finally, Hansen thinks, his baby will get the kudos it deserves. The caveat is that TCAP has to start catching bigger fish. What they really need, Hansen believes, is a whale.

Trending Stories

Primetime gives you a gallery of showbiz grotesques and True Crime Inc. archetypes, from the way-too-into-it researcher (Matthew Maher) to the executive (Jessica Hecht) trying to poach Bender for a copycat series on a competing network. What the audience needs is a surrogate, which the movie delivers in the form of Dam Plumb (Licorice Pizza‘s Skyler Gisondo). He’s an aspiring actor who auditions for a mystery gig, i.e. a 13-year-old boy used to entice pervs and creeps for these televised sting operations. “Decoy Dan,” as Hansen dubs him, isn’t sure about any of this, especially after he’s thrown in the deep end of the pool on his first day. But hey, work is work. The devil on his shoulder, Bender, keeps giving him the thumbs up. The angel on the other side, in the form of a fellow decoy with a conscience — what’s up, Phoebe Bridgers! — warns him that this will indeed take a toll on his soul. Meanwhile, a father figure who does not have the young man’s best interests at heart keeps saying he’s a superhero. When that metaphorical whale surfaces in Murphy, Texas, the scene is set for a disaster.

Related Content

Folks who are up on their To Catch a Predator history know what happens next, and it isn’t pretty. Primetime takes its sweet time settling on a specific tone for the story it wants to tell: It’s not a satire, but it’s close. It’s not a straight bio-drama, but it’s close. It’s not a horror movie, but it’s really, really close. That last act finally fully commits to the third option, and you feel like Oppenheim and Company are mounting a full-court press against whatever subtlety that might be loitering on the periphery. Going for baroque is the only way to truly capture what the movie is about, however. TCAP shouldn’t be held responsible for all of our collective sins as a society, of course. But in terms of where we’re at right now — the performative righteousness, the obsession with fame, the need to turn the worst aspects of humanity into the best entertainment money can buy — well, you can see how this looks, right? Primetime recounts how this show didn’t create a sense of collective bloodlust, it just rode a wave that was already there. Then it tells us we’re free to go, knowing what awaits us right outside the front door. %!s()

The former foes met at a five-star hotel a few blocks from Trump Tower in Manhattan late on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN general assembly. The hotel is about 7 miles from the Brooklyn prison where Maduro has been held since he was snatched during a special forces raid on Caracas in January.

On the eve of Tuesday’s encounter, an American reporter asked Rodríguez if she would be visiting Maduro, under whom she served as vice-president, during her stay in New York. She did not reply.

But she did find time to meet Trump at the luxury Lotte New York Palace hotel, with the get-together seen as a key part of Rodríguez’s push for international legitimacy after years of Venezuela’s diplomatic isolation under Maduro’s dictatorship. On Wednesday she is expected to address the annual UN assembly.

“We held a historic meeting with … Donald Trump, with whom we discussed strengthening the bilateral relationship between our countries and advancing a cooperation agenda in strategic areas such as energy, mining, security and other matters of common interest,” Rodríguez wrote on Instagram, in a 133-word statement that made no mention of her incarcerated ally.

Oliver Blanco, one of Rodríguez’s top diplomats, claimed the meeting marked “a new stage of dialogue and understanding between both countries” and was “an important step toward new opportunities for our country and our people”. Blanco also posted a cheery photo in which he and Trump smiled and gave the thumbs up to the camera.

A White House aide said the meeting was also attended by top US officials including the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and the deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller.

“It was a short meeting but it was an important meeting,” Rubio said on Wednesday, telling reporters it had focused on Venezuela’s economic recovery and political transition.

Hours earlier, Rodríguez had sat in the general assembly hall watching Trump celebrate the “massive military operation” during which Maduro – whom he called an “outlaw dictator” and “a real criminal” – was captured. “It was a war … [and] to the victor belong the spoils,” Trump bragged of the recent oil deal between the US and Venezuela, as Rodríguez appeared to wince.

Some observers also detected signs of discomfort in the body language captured in the photo of Trump and Rodríguez, who appeared to be clenching her left fist.

Some of Rodríguez’s critics in Venezuela called her treatment by Trump an unmitigated humiliation for a socialist party politician who has spent years railing against American imperialism.

After Maduro’s capture, Trump warned that Rodríguez would “pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro,” if she did not toe the US line. Since then, Rodríguez has made a series of concessions, including ceding control of Venezuela’s oil revenues to Washington and agreeing to a controversial 65bn-barrel oil deal that Trump on Tuesday called “the largest oil deal in history”.

One opposition figure denounced the Rodríguez-Trump meeting as an encounter between a “shameless puppet and her unscrupulous puppeteer”.

But Rodríguez has succeeded in consolidating power, with Trump seemingly more focused on gaining access to Venezuela’s natural resources than pushing for a fresh presidential election that would move the South American country back towards democracy.

Trump has repeatedly praised Rodríguez’s “fantastic” and “terrific” leadership while sidelining her main rival, the opposition leader María Corina Machado. Machado, who left Venezuela late last year to receive her Nobel peace prize in Oslo, has been unable to return and is exiled in Panama. She reportedly made three attempts to return to Venezuela this week but failed.

Orlando Pérez, a Latin America expert from the University of North Texas at Dallas, rejected the idea that Rodríguez had been humiliated by her meeting with Trump. “It’s a huge triumph [for her]. She got the photo op she wanted. I frankly don’t think you can overestimate how important the photo op was for her,” said Pérez, who believed the image legitimised Rodríguez’s position as president and signalled that Washington was happy to keep working with her and for other leaders to engage with her.

For Trump, meeting Rodríguez was a way to show Maga voters he had “won Venezuela” by commandeering its massive oil reserves with January’s invasion. “So that picture was a win-win for Delcy and for Trump,” Pérez added.

Before Tuesday’s tête-à-tête, the presidents of the US and Venezuela had last met in 2015, when Barack Obama and Maduro spoke briefly during a regional summit in Panama. In the decade that followed, Maduro became an international pariah as he led his country into economic chaos and increasingly authoritarian rule, and Venezuela was hit by punishing international sanctions.

At the 2015 summit, Obama conceded that the days in which “the US could meddle with impunity” in Latin America were over. But Trump has dramatically different ideas and has been forging ahead with attempts to reassert US dominance in a region it has long considered its back yard.

As well as capturing Venezuela’s government and trying to topple Cuba’s communist government by strangling its economy, Trump’s push for hegemony has also seen the US accused of trying to swing Brazil’s presidential election in favour of the far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro through diplomatic and economic pressure.

Addressing the UN assembly on Tuesday, the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, hit back at such efforts, without directly citing the US. “We will not allow the enemies of democracy – internal or external – to attack the will of the people. Brazilian democracy belongs to the Brazilians,” said Lula who is facing a tough battle to win re-election in October’s vote.

“Brazil doesn’t fit into anyone’s back yard,” added Lula, who also called for elections in Venezuela. He did not meet Rodríguez during her visit to New York but said the “people of Venezuela deserve to decide their own future”. %!s()

Lucas has, over the years, occasionally discussed having nebulous ideas for his own Star Wars sequel trilogy, though nothing concrete was set in motion before he sold the series to Disney for $4 billion back in 2012. The filmmaker has also made conflicting statements over the past 50 years over whether he ever had ideas for a third trilogy of stories in the first place.

Still, Lucas has now referenced an abandoned desire to complete what has become known as the "Skywalker Saga" — all nine main Star Wars films — though Lucas has said he had to choose between creating those and working on his newly-opened museum.

"When I did this, I decided to retire from making movies," Lucas said of creating The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, in conversation with CBS. "Which was a big deal because I had three more Star Wars to make.

"But I realized that I was running out of time," he continued, "and I did want to make this museum, and I'd spent a lot of time developing digital technology for the movie business. You know, all art depends on technology."

Lucas' early plans for the Star Wars sequel trilogy changed dramatically over time, with ideas that it would feature a sister for Luke Skywalker and an ultimate showdown with Emperor Palpatine reworked into Return of the Jedi. By the 1980s, Lucas realized the sheer scale of the story, and elected to make just the main trilogy.

Of course, Lucas did eventually go on to write and direct the prequel trilogy, to greater and lesser success, but this experience reportedly soured him against continuing the Star Wars saga further. By the time of the 1990s, after nine years of production on the Star Wars prequels, Lucas sounded particularly unenthused at the prospect of another decade making movies.

"Basically what I said as a joke was, 'Maybe when Harrison and Carrie are in their 70s, we'll come back and do another version,'" Ford told Starlog magazine in 2002. "The thing I didn't realize then, and that I do realize now very clearly, is that not only would they be in their 70s, but I would be in my 70s too."

While Star Wars' third trilogy was eventually made by Disney, again to greater and lesser success, the Mickey Mouse company still incorporated several ideas that Lucas himself has said he originated. These included plans for its story to be set around 30 years after Return of the Jedi, with an older Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher all returning. Lucas also had plans for Luke's role to be "much more ethereal," potentially on another plane of existence entirely, which doesn't sound too dissimilar to where Skywalker ends up.

As part of the same interview, Lucas also defended his constant tinkering with the original Star Wars trilogy, which has undergone at least four rounds of changes since its release.

Pocognoli has said he will not beg players to choose Scotland, something the 25-year-old agrees with.

"I think if he had to try and convince me, convince anyone, it's probably not the right thing for the player," Binks told Sky Sports News.

"I didn't need any convincing; I was available.

"I wanted to play for Scotland. I've wanted to play for Scotland for years and now the opportunity has come, I'm just really proud.

"It's where you feel your heart is and where you want to go. This was the route I wanted to take."

It is a new-look Scotland under Pocognoli with 12 players who were in Steve Clarke's final squad for the World Cup missing out, only Scott McTominay, Lawrence Shankland and Che Adams through injury.

And while it's a new environment for Binks, there are some familiar faces within the camp.

"It was a few years ago that I was with Aaron Hickey in Bologna and he got called up while we were there.

"I could play for the 21s at the time and nothing ever coming up but it was always, Scotland was always the one for me that I wanted to go and play for.

"Going back years ago, under 16s when I went away with Scotland, the vibe was just so good.

"It felt like a proper team, it was just normal lads and you felt like you were playing with your mates so I knew there was always that feeling around it. I wanted to go and be a part of that again."

The Pocognoli era officially gets underway in Ljubljana on Saturday, with a game against Switzerland at Hampden Park three days later.

The squad then fly to North Macedonia on October 3 before returning to Glasgow to face Slovenia again on October 6.

Scotland were demoted from Nations League A after a play-off defeat by Greece last year and return to the second tier for this year's competition.

"Obviously we want to get to the A group of the Nations League but there are a lot of new faces, a lot of new management, new ways of playing," Binks added.

"I know what it's like because I've got a new manager at my club now and it's taking a bit of time so I imagine it's the same sort of process here.

"It's just about getting the players on board and buying into everything the manager wants to do.

"It's been early days, but I think everyone is fully on board and believes in what we can do as a country."

Scotland squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Scott Bain (Falkirk), Angus Gunn (San Jose Earthquakes), Liam Kelly (Rangers), Jon McCracken (Bradford City)

Defenders: Luis Binks (Brondby), Josh Doig (Sassuolo), Colby Donovan (Celtic), Luke Graham (Stoke City), Jack Hendry (Al-Ettifaq), Aaron Hickey (Brentford), Scott McKenna (Dinamo Zagreb), Nathan Patterson (Torino), Andy Robertson (Tottenham), Stephen Welsh (Swansea City)

Midfielders: Ryan Christie (Bournemouth), Lewis Ferguson (Bologna), Billy Gilmour (Napoli), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Josh McPake (Hearts), Lennon Miller (Udinese), Kristie Montgomery (Blackburn Rovers)

Forwards: Kieron Bowie (Sassuolo), Findlay Curtis (Rangers), Ben Gannon-Doak (Bournemouth), Oli McBurnie (Hull City), Robbie Ure (Sevilla), James Wilson (Hearts)
