GTA 6 expected to sell a record-breaking 51M copies in first week, report says

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be another blockbuster hit for Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive. According to a new analyst report, GTA 6 is now on pace to earn between $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion in cumulative global sales by the end of launch week.

At the most conservative estimate from gaming market insights firm Newzoo, Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to sell around 37 million units during week one — "an exceptional result," according to the firm's analysis. Newzoo expects that GTA 6 will actually earn closer to $4.5 billion in sales by launch week, selling about 51 million units.

Pre-orders for GTA 6 went live on June 25, and Newzoo estimates that the game quickly racked up $180 million in digital sales in the U.S., U.K., France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. The firm calls media reports that GTA 6 amassed $1 billion in sales during its first hour — let alone its first week — "absurd." Newzoo says, "Nothing ever has and nothing ever will." Even still, the analysis calls GTA 6's initial sales "the strongest opening to a pre-order campaign ever recorded in our dataset."

So, yeah, if you were concerned that the 230 million existing Grand Theft Auto 5 players weren't going to show up in force for the long-awaited sequel, don't worry. Rockstar Games is going to be just fine.

Back in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 broke records for achieving first-day sales of more than $800 million worldwide, publisher Take-Two announced at the time. Within three days, GTA 5 had grossed more than $1 billion. Take-Two shipped almost 29 million copies during GTA 5's first month on the market. At first, GTA 5 was released on just two platforms: PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Rockstar has since ported the game to Windows PC and two subsequent console generations.

Rockstar Games officially revealed Grand Theft Auto 6 back in 2023, and intially expected to release the game in 2025. After a series of delays and gameplay reveals, Rockstar settled on a final release date for late 2026. Since then, Rockstar has confirmed a controversial digital-only release for GTA 6 alongside an official price announcement and pre-order details. The developer also confirmed its new Grand Theft Auto will be a single-player-only game, and it hasn't provided any insight into what it plans to do with Grand Theft Auto Online when GTA 6 launches.

Rees-Zammit has featured in 10 out of Wales' 11 games played in the 2025-26 campaign, with eight starts and two replacement appearances.

The Bristol back only missed the 73-0 defeat against South Africa in November 2025 because he was ineligible as he played for an English club and the match fell outside World Rugby's international window.

Now, after being recalled to the starting side for the final match of the campaign against the Springboks in the Nations Championship in Durban on Saturday, Rees-Zammit admits he expected a bit more from himself during the past 12 months.

"I haven't settled in as quickly as I wanted to back into rugby," said Rees-Zammit, who has floated between full-back and wing.

"The more games I am playing, the more confidence I'm getting."

Rees-Zammit hopes he can make more of an impact in the 2026-27 season leading into next year's World Cup in Australia.

"This season was a very long one and I played multiple positions," said Rees-Zammit.

"I never quite got my feet on the ground and back running like I used to, but I've learned so much.

"Hopefully I can give it my all for this final game, then next year is the year that I try and make the biggest impact I can."

Rees-Zammit says he has no regrets about his rugby return.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed it," he said. "It's taken a bit of time to to find my feet again, but this is the sport I've played since I was seven.

"I've loved being back in this environment, in the Welsh squad playing Test games against tough opposition.

"I was out of the game for a bit so it was going to take time, but I'm feeling confident and ready to finish the season strongly."

Following the opening Nations Championship 39-24 victory over Fiji, Rees-Zammit was dropped to the bench for Ellis Mee for the 35-21 defeat against Argentina in San Juan.

Now Rees-Zammit finds himself back in against the Springboks after his starting omission raised some eyebrows.

"I'm always trying to make an impact whenever I'm on the field, whether it's off the bench or starting," said Rees-Zammit.

"The minutes you get are different, but everyone in the 23 is trying their hardest to make an impact for Wales.

"They will do everything they can to help us win moments, which will end up leading to winning games."

Wales have a squad of 35 players preparing for this match against South Africa with Rees-Zammit stating the squad know they will not play or start every international.

"We're a close-knit group and and the players care about each other," said Rees-Zammit.

"We've gone through almost three campaigns together and have been getting those connections within the squad.

"Some players won't play some weeks and some will play others, so it's about putting that jersey on and giving it your all."

Rees-Zammit has only managed two tries in his 10 Tests since returning to rugby, with scores in the loss to New Zealand and victory against Japan in Cardiff last November.

He has not crossed in his past seven internationals with this record compared to 14 tries in 31 internationals before he left for the NFL.

Tandy and Wales attack coach Matt Sherratt are still searching how to utilise Rees-Zammit's speed and eye for the line.

Former Wales centre Jonathan Davies said last week he wanted Rees-Zammit to show more hunger in getting on the ball, which the player says he is trying to do.

"It's my role to try and make an impact when I get the ball, to try and find work to help the team," said Rees-Zammit.

"Personally, I'm trying to make an impact both sides of the ball and defensively it is also a full 15-man squad effort."

Wales have not been given much hope of victory against the Springboks this weekend, although Rees-Zammit was part of the side that beat South Africa in Bloemfontein in 2022.

"It's another opportunity to grow as a team, go to the world champions' backyard and put on a performance that us and the whole of Wales can be proud of," said Rees-Zammit.

"It's going to be a big task but one we're excited for in the last hit out of the season."

Rees-Zammit admits Wales will have to much improved to even compete with Rassie Erasmus' side.

"Physically we weren't up to the task against Argentina and there's probably no better team in the world than South Africa at that," said Rees-Zammit.

"That's going to have to rise a lot. It's just about finding our flow and we didn't do that in Argentina."

Wales have won three out of 11 internationals so far this season under Steve Tandy.

Rees-Zammit says that ratio will need to improve next season going into the World Cup, but is encouraged by some progress,

"We've got a couple of wins under our belt, but ultimately it's time to start winning games heading into the World Cup," said Rees-Zammit.

"During the autumn and Six Nations, you could see we were building something.

"We won three games in a row but had a bump in the road last week against Argentina.

"It's about fixing those wrongs, going back out there and giving it our all against a tough team." %!s()

Researchers at Texas A&M University have now created an automated fluid perfusion device that could revolutionize animal-free lab-on-a-chip technology—thanks to an accordion player.

"We have been struggling for decades to find a stable perfusion system," said Dr. Abhishek Jain, associate professor of biomedical engineering and Barbara and Ralph Cox '53 Faculty Fellow at Texas A&M University. "The human blood flow arising from the heartbeat is made of multiple pulses, multiple wavelengths, and it happens over a very short period of time: You need a change in flow within 50 milliseconds. That cannot be delivered by the pump equipment currently available."

The waveform of blood flow—and cells' reaction to it—is at the heart of numerous health problems. When the wave pattern of blood flow changes due to disease, age or even zero gravity, the endothelial cells that line every blood vessel in the body begin to exhibit pathological cell behaviors, eventually leading to life-threatening diseases.

Now, Jain and Dr. Ankit Kumar, who recently earned his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at Texas A&M, have developed the HemaDyne, a first-of-its-kind pump capable of perfectly replicating blood flow under any condition and in any part of the body. Their work has been published in Nature Communications.

"What this pump does is allow you to take any blood flow waveform recorded in a clinic from any patient or blood vessel, then re-create that blood flow waveform in the lab, where it can be observed," Kumar said. "Using that, you can see how the endothelial cells behave under those conditions. You can investigate the very beginning of vascular diseases and how they form so that they can be solved using therapeutics early on.

"You can even take cells from human patients and put them inside the chips so that you can test different drugs to see what would best resolve these flow-associated disorders early on and prevent them from progressing into major life-changing disorders decades down the line."

The inspiration for this device was a student playing an accordion at Texas A&M's College Station campus. While both Jain and Kumar had grown up regularly seeing harmoniums—accordion instruments often played in Bollywood musicals—it was not until they saw the unknown student playing one outside a campus engineering building that the physics of the instrument suddenly clicked.

"We noticed that the accordion instrument has these bellows in the middle that can expand and contract. It's this geometry that allows you to create air pressure without too much effort," said Jain. "There are pumps that use air pressure flow, but none of them have taken advantage of this physics or geometry, which allows the musician to create waveforms really fast. We hypothesized, what if we used that air pressure change principle to create flow instead?"

Kumar and Jain began investigating the potential applications of accordion folds in the lab. While accordion instruments are expensive, the exact same geometry is used in plastic "accordion bottle" glue dispensers—available for less than $1 a bottle. Equipped with the exact scientific principles they were looking for, the researchers set about turning the glue dispenser into a system capable of generating pressure waveforms, just like musical harmonies. The answer turned out to be 3D printers.

"There is a large open-source community for 3D printing, so I borrowed the firmware from 3D printers," said Kumar. "It's a language called G-code. I was able to use that language to take blood flow waveform measurements from a patient—convert that into G-code—and then produce these waveforms in the lab, allowing us to study complex vascular diseases."

Unlocking the origins of vascular diseases is only one small part of the device's potential. The ability to accurately model the conditions of any measurable disease using human cells in a small, easily portable device could drive everything from new drug discovery to space travel.

"You can continue to run these systems for months. You can send them to space and bring them back. You can model chronic disease," said Jain. "It has opened the doors for new technologies to come.

"Five years down the line, having MPS systems connected to this pump technology could make them robust and standardized to a point that would allow good-faith clinical trials where the chances of success will be significantly higher than what they are now. That means better drugs, better knowledge of human diseases, better knowledge of what happens to astronauts' health when they go to space and come back, and better knowledge of aging and cancer."

The research was conducted with support from NASA, which considers the technology a promising component of safe human travel to Mars.

"We are really blessed that we have the funding from NASA and its partners to be able to do this kind of high-impact work with our graduate and undergraduate biomedical engineering students," said Jain. "This is an example of how instrumentation engineering can enable biology. This device will power new biological discoveries."

The device is currently being patented with the help of the Texas A&M Innovation office.

Inside the Apostolic Church of Nigeria in the Lekki district, chairs and their sodden cushions were piled in knee-high floodwaters that had engulfed the building.

The megacity lies on a low-lying coastline, making its population of around 20 million people vulnerable to flooding.

But experts say rising sea levels driven by climate change, erratic rainfall and unregulated groundwater extraction fueled by rapid urbanization are also major drivers.

Most Lagos households don't have access to treated, piped water, forcing them to drill boreholes for potable water and disrupting the ground's equilibrium.

The crowded city is among those that the World Economic Forum says are sinking by up to 87 millimeters (3.4 inches) per year.

As Nigeria's commercial hub, Lagos attracts thousands of people daily from across the country seeking better economic opportunities. The U.N. puts Lagos's annual growth rate at 6%.

Rapid development of residential, commercial and industrial buildings is everywhere, especially in Lekki, which has a designated special free trade zone to attract investment and is also earmarked for a new international airport.

Akpan, 42, recalled waking to "discover that everywhere is flooded," he told AFP, standing in the middle of a soaked church auditorium. His children's schoolbooks, waterlogged and tattered, lay strewn across the grounds.

Under siege

Heavy rains sweep Nigeria between May and November, often resulting in dangerous and at times deadly floods.

Last year, authorities forecast annual rainfall of 1,952 mm (77 inches), above the average of 1,721 millimeters (68 inches) recorded between 2012 and 2022.

This year, it is expected to range between 1,650 mm (65 inches) and 3,030 mm (119 inches).

"It's like we are under siege from flooding," said Uche Adibua, 46, in the Okota area of Lagos. His apartment has been flooding since the rains began this year.

"It didn't happen before," he said.

But such disasters are becoming more common: Late June storms that dumped rain from Ivory Coast to Nigeria, sparking flooding that killed about 100 people, were "supercharged" by climate change, according to World Weather Attribution, a global coalition of scientists.

The wider Lagos state, which encompasses the city, has 180 kilometers (112 miles) of coastline and extensive waterways, leaving it particularly vulnerable.

"Lagos is located in a low-lying coastal environment, which predisposes it to coastal flooding," Ibidun Adelekan, a geography professor at the University of Ibadan, told AFP, adding that increasing rainfall compounds the risk.

Scientific analyses have shown that the state now experiences heavier rainstorms than in the past, she added.

Poor infrastructure, inadequate drainage and indiscriminate waste disposal add to the crisis.

It is common to see heaps of empty plastic bags and bottles floating in Lagos lagoons and open-air drainage channels, as well as piles of rotting waste on city sidewalks, where garbage bins are almost nonexistent.

Loss of natural surfaces, the destruction of wetlands and unstructured land reclamation for development have further reduced the city's ability to absorb excess rainwater, experts say.

"Annual flooding in Lagos is caused by heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage, clogged gutters laden with debris and fast urban growth that hinders natural water absorption," Olumide Idowu, an independent environmentalist, told AFP.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos government's environmental chief, agrees that "illegal dredging and land reclamation" have caused "significant environmental challenges," with vast wetlands filled and built over as the city grapples with rapid population growth.

Highway headache

Some residents of the Lekki district blame the construction of the 700-kilometer (435-mile) Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, which will link Lagos to Calabar city near the Cameroon border, for worsening flooding.

"Water has never entered the house before," Babatunde Vaughn, a technology consultant whose apartment is about 150 meters (164 yards) from the highway, told AFP.

The road, a government flagship project, was the "only significant thing that has happened between the last rainy season and this year," Vaughn said. "It didn't flood this way."

But works minister Dave Umahi and Hitech, the Nigerian company building the highway, reject the notion that the road has worsened flooding.

Umahi insisted at a recent meeting with residents that the road has instead created a buffer protecting surrounding communities from coastal flooding.

For environmentalists, many of the fixes should be low-hanging fruit for the government: updating building codes, regulating urban development and building drainage systems to accommodate increased rainfall.

The Imagen Foundation also announced that actor, filmmaker, producer and musician Andy Garcia will receive the org’s lifetime achievement award. (Garcia was also nominated in the best supporting actor – drama field for “Landman.”) Also, the creators behind “Acapulco” and Apple TV will receive the creative achievement award, while Los Angeles County First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis will be presented with the president’s award “for her distinguished career in public service and longstanding commitment to advancing opportunity and representation for Latino communities.”

This year’s Imagen Awards will be spread out among 25 categories — but Imagen Foundation founder/president Helen Hernandez noted that there was a lack of submissions for director, lead and supporting performers in film. That’s a reminder, she noted, that there’s still too little Latino representation on screen.

“This year’s nominees reflect the extraordinary diversity of Latino talent across television, documentaries, independent productions, digital media and music,” Hernandez said in a statement. “We are proud to recognize the creators, actors and artists whose work represents our community and the many different perspectives within it.

“However, we cannot ignore the continued lack of Latino representation in media and the fact that we are unable to present awards in the film categories Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting due to a lack of submissions. This should concern our entire industry. As a business, Latinos are a $3 trillion audience, and by overlooking the value of our community, it directly affects the economic health and longevity of the entertainment industry. We celebrate the progress represented by this year’s nominees, while continuing to challenge the industry to do better.”
