Gill notched his best ODI score and a record-high individual tally in an ODI run-chase. It was his 11th hundred in the format, one of five on the day, as India amassed 406-2 in 43.3 overs to take a winning 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Opening partner Rohit Sharma made 101 as the duo put on 255 off 158 balls - the second-highest opening stand for India in ODIs.

It was the second successful 400-plus run-chase in ODI history, after South Africa's record 438-9 against Australia in 2006.

Earlier, three West Indies batters struck centuries in an ODI innings for the first time. Amir Jangoo top-scored with 114, skipper Shai Hope made 104 and opener John Campbell set the day's tempo with 101 off 68 balls.

Put into bat, West Indies totaled 405-7 and crossed the 400-mark for the first time in an ODI.

Gill, though, helped his team win with 6.3 overs to spare. It was India's highest run-chase in ODIs - its previous best was 362-1 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.

Gill's second 50 came off only 24 balls, getting to his century in 62 deliveries overall.

Sharma chalked up his 35th century off 72 balls before he was trapped lbw by Jayden Seales in the 27th over.

India's opening partnership is second only to the 258-run stand by Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly against Kenya in Paarl in 2001.

Gill continued his onslaught after Sharma went, celebrating a second ODI double hundred, off 117 balls.

It is the fastest double century in ODIs. Gill also surpassed Glenn Maxwell's 201 against Afghanistan in Mumbai in 2023 to claim the highest score in a run-chase.

It is also the third-highest individual score in an ODI.

"It was a hot and humid day," Gill said. "With 400 on the board, there was pressure at the start and then at the halfway mark. I am very pleased I could stay till the end and finish this innings. I try to break my innings into smaller parts. Once we scored 200-odd before 25 overs, the pressure was on them."

Earlier, Campbell smashed five sixes and nine fours as West Indies had another quickfire start despite the injured Justin Greaves missing out.

Campbell scored his second ODI hundred off only 65 balls as the visitors made 96-1 in the powerplay.

He put on 110 off 79 balls with Hope, who also used the batting conditions to good effect to record his 20th ODI hundred.

Jangoo followed up his half-century in the first game with a second ODI hundred off 70 balls. He hit three sixes and 13 fours as West Indies took 76 runs off the last 10 overs.

It was the first instance of five centuries in a single ODI game.

Overall, it was the 11th instance of a side having three centuries in ODIs, but the first to end in defeat.

Chandigarh will host the final ODI on Saturday. India won the first game by seven wickets in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

Australia deny South Africa clean sweep by winning rain-affected third ODI

Australia avoided a 3-0 clean sweep against South Africa after winning a rain-affected third and final ODI by 45 runs via the DLS Method on Wednesday.

South Africa, who had already sealed the series with victories in Durban and Johannesburg, ended up on 145-4 in 28 overs. The rain started at 8.30pm local time with the home team well behind on DLS and the umpires then called the game off at 9.30pm.

Australia had earlier posted 322-9 on the back of captain Mitchell Marsh's third successive half century and Alex Carey's 74 off 88 balls.

Fast bowler Xavier Bartlett then continued to shine with the new ball and leg-spinner Adam Zampa hit the right lengths as both grabbed two wickets.

Corbin Bosch dragged South Africa back in the death overs with the wickets of Carey and Cameron Green, but it wasn't enough. The all-rounder ended up with 4-60 while Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams picked up two wickets each.

"In the second set he started playing better and I struggled a little bit physically to stay fresh," said Djokovic, who arrived in Beijing having suffered opening-round exits at the US Open and at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati.

"When I was serving, I was dominating and going through my games quite comfortably. It was helping getting those first serves in, that high percentages makes my life easier in my service games and I played a great tie-break to close it out in two, so I am very happy about that."

Djokovic, 39, was treated on court by the physio at 3-2 down in the second set, but he didn't appear to be hindered by the issue as he saw out his next two service matches to love and played some of his best tennis of the match.

There was only one break of serve during the match, by Djokovic in Borges' first service game.

Djokovic raced ahead in the tie-break and swiftly racked up four match points, but needed only one as Borges found the net.

"That was a really competitive match by the end of it," Annabel Croft told Sky Sports Tennis.

"Djokovic managed to find a way towards that finishing line and actually his service games became more and more efficient. So much of what we talked about in commentary was the physicality of the match and how uncomfortable Djokovic felt."

The last of those titles had come four decades earlier. City had just finished the 2007/08 season in ninth, 32 points behind champions Manchester United, having suffered an 8-1 loss to Middlesbrough in what proved to be Sven-Goran Eriksson's final game in charge.

City had been relegated three times in the Premier League era, dropping as low as the third tier only 10 years earlier. The previous 16 Premier League titles had been shared between Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. City were not in the picture.

Few could have predicted the extent of the transformation that followed. In the nine-year period covered by the Premier League's investigation, City won three Premier League titles, more than doubling their previous tally. A new superpower had emerged.

But behind their unprecedented rise, an independent commission has determined there were serious breaches of financial rules.

Their findings include "sham" contracts with commercial partners and the artificial inflation of revenues by £830m. Possible sanctions include fines, transfer bans and expulsion from the Premier League. Some are calling for their honours to be stripped. City deny all wrongdoing and intend to appeal the decision.

The "disguised funding scheme", as it is described in the commission's report, involved City's Abu Dhabi United Group owners paying huge sponsorship fees that were recorded as commercial revenue, helping City embark on an unprecedented era of spending.

Between the summer of 2009 and the 2018 January transfer window, the club spent £1.2bn on players, according to Transfermarkt data - nearly £300m more than next-highest spenders Chelsea on £931.7m. City's net spend of £888.2m dwarfed that of next-highest United on £513.1m.

The extraordinary extent of their spending can be seen on a year-by-year basis too. City ranked top for transfer spending among Premier League clubs in five of the nine seasons covered by the investigation, and ranked top for net spend in six.

The club signed a succession of the world's best players during the period, many of whom played crucial roles in the club's subsequent successes, starting with their first title win in 44 years in 2011/12.

In the two seasons before that historic triumph, when spending totalled £260.5m, the incomings included Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure, David Silva, Mario Balotelli and James Milner as City began to lay the groundwork to become challengers.

Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Eliaquim Mangala were the headline arrivals in the subsequent four seasons, before spending ramped up again in 2015/16, when their new recruits included Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling.

The highest-spending season of the investigation came in 2017/18, when City won the third of the Premier League titles in question after committing £282.5m on players including Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva and Ederson.

At that point, the sponsorship fees being paid by the Abu Dhabi United Group had increased for four consecutive seasons, reaching £134.7m in 2017/18, up from £22.5m in 2009/10.

The £830m falsely recorded as commercial revenue between 2009/10 and 2017/18, according to the commission's findings, equates to roughly 70 per cent of City's £1.2bn transfer spend.

In the same period, they were able to attract a trio of elite managers in Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola, all of whom benefitted from the club's transfer spending.

City won an FA Cup, three League Cups and a Community Shield in addition to their three Premier League titles, making it the most successful period in the club's history.

The graph above, showing the club's finishing positions over the course of history, highlights the pivotal nature of the period in question, showing City's clear emergence as a dominant force in English football, a position they have retained subsequently.

Manchester City, who finished in mid-table when Sheikh Mansour completed his takeover in 2008, have since seen their fortunes transformed, finishing outside the Premier League's top three just once in the last 16 seasons.

Now eight-time winners, City rank behind only Manchester United for Premier League title wins, having overhauled Chelsea and Arsenal in the rankings. Factor pre-Premier League title wins and they are one of only four clubs, along with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, to have reached double figures.

But the commission's findings, covering the transformative period between 2009/10 and 2017/18, put their achievements, and the changing of football's landscape, in a harsh new light. %!s()

The independent commission found that between 2009/10 and 2017/18, Manchester City arranged "sham" contracts with a number of its commercial partners as part of a "disguised funding scheme" to artificially inflate the club's revenues by £830m.

The club continue to deny the breaches, with chief executive Ferran Soriano calling the process a "Premier League conspiracy theory" in a video message to players and staff. The club have confirmed they will appeal against the ruling and have until Friday October 2 to do so.

Guardiola, who was City manager between 2016 and 2026, posted on social media: "I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever. I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran, the players, staff, Enzo [Maresca] and you, our unique supporters.

"Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all."

Klopp responds to City judgement

Asked in 2024 about the potential of City being stripped of their titles, Klopp said: "If you organise a bus parade, I am in! How long it takes, I don't care how long it takes!"

However, Klopp, who is now the Germany head coach, was far more serious in his response when asked about City being found guilty by the independent commission.

"I really haven't given it much thought, but of course I've noticed it," Klopp said in a news conference ahead of Germany's Nations League fixture against Serbia.

"I also remember what I said: 'If there's ever a victory parade, I'll be there'. It doesn't feel like that anymore. It's not that I feel I have to have a bus parade. I can just sit back and wait for it to happen.

"I have huge respect for Pep Guardiola and the football City played during the time we were up against them. The sort of football they put on the pitch, the sort of opponents they were for us. It's far too big. The standard is far too high.

"If any sanctions are imposed, I've got nothing to do with it. And that's why I'm waiting to see what happens. The legal proceedings have been going on for a long time; I assume there will be an appeal, which will take ages.

"I'm a long way from preparing myself for it in any way, and I've got absolutely no sense of it.

"I don't need to be Premier League champions a few more times. I'm completely happy with what we've achieved. We battled it out on the pitch, and I can't say anything about the rest because I don't know exactly what it's all about. To be honest, I'm not interested either."

News and analysis after Man City guilty verdict

• The 'disguised funding scheme' used by Manchester City changed the football landscape from 2009. Sky Sports features writer Nick Wright looks at how City's status was transformed through the course of the nine seasons in the investigation.
• Several Manchester City sponsors are standing by the club in the wake of the guilty verdict, with Lucozade, Kellogg's, Revolut, BYD, Joie and PUMA all telling Sky Sports News they are not commenting on the independent commission's findings while the process remains ongoing.
• Manchester City Women boss Andree Jeglertz insists it is "business as usual" for his squad as they prepare to take on Real Madrid in the Champions League.

What did the independent commission find?

• Manchester City arranged "sham" contracts with a number of its commercial partners as part of a "disguised funding scheme" to artificially inflate the club's revenues by £830m.
• The club filed accounts that concealed the true state of its finances.
• Manchester City were significantly in breach of both the Premier League's and UEFA's spending limits and broke "well over 100" Premier League regulations.
• Manchester City failed to co-operate and act in good faith towards the league during the investigation, with three out of four alleged breaches upheld and one charge not proven

The commission also said it was "regrettable" that a decision had taken so long to reach, with the hearing having taken place between September and December 2024.

Man City: Process was not impartial

A Manchester City statement released on Tuesday read: "Manchester City FC is both disappointed and surprised by the opinion of the Premier League commission, that has been published today.

"The club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case. The club will therefore be relentless, and where necessary proactive, in any and all appropriate regulatory and legal forums.

"The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements uncompleted. Manchester City FC will now pursue the appeal avenues open to it, on the basis that the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe.

"The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.

"The club is obviously restricted in what it can say further until all future proceedings are complete."

Manchester City's statement erroneously refers to a Premier League commission. It is an independent commission. %!s()

The 41-year-old striker, a regular in Portugal's starting line-up since 2003, did not play a minute of Sunday's win over Norway and did not train with his teammates on Monday or Tuesday. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has not reported any injury or physical issue with the player.

Ronaldo's future in Portugal's international team has increasingly become a key talking point in recent years.

An automatic starter for two decades, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was dropped from the starting line-up by then-head coach Fernando Santos for Portugal's 2022 World Cup knockout matches against Switzerland and Morocco. Roberto Martinez, Santos's successor, reinstated Ronaldo and selected him from the start for all 10 of Portugal's matches across the 2024 European Championship and this summer's World Cup finals.

While Ronaldo's long-term rival Lionel Messi, 39, will make his final Argentina appearance next week against Benin, there is no sign that the Al Nassr forward has plans to call time on his Portugal career.

Last month, he said he would "probably" retire at the end of the club season next June but before this international break he insisted he could still help the national side.

"I'm a thinker. You have to think," Ronaldo said when asked if he had considered retiring after this year's World Cup. "This is why you see me here now. It means I will continue.

"I had a conversation with the (FPF) president, with our coach. I still believe that I'm able to help the national team to reach what they want and will finish when I feel like I'm not doing anything here."

Ronaldo had seven shots without scoring in Portugal's 1-0 victory over Wales before being substituted off in the 65th minute for Goncalo Ramos. "I thought it was important to have fresh legs," Jesus said after the game. "Someone who could press the Wales center-backs and stop them playing out, someone with more speed in the first line of defence."

For the win over Norway three days later, Ronaldo was an unused substitute. "Whether we like it or not, Cris isn't like Joao Neves, who is 20 and can play every three days," Jesus explained.

The head coach had said before that match that he planned for Ronaldo to participate, but that he was unlikely to feature from the start. When the final whistle went in Oslo, Ronaldo made his way directly from the substitute's bench and down the tunnel, not joining his team-mates in acknowledging the visiting Portuguese fans.

After the game, Jesus said it "wasn't the right moment for Cris to come on" and the state of the match had meant he changed his mind.

Sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity to allow them to do so candidly, have told The Athletic that Ronaldo was irritated by not featuring at all in the game. It was just the third time the forward was an unused substitute for Portugal; following a Euro 2008 group game (when Portugal had already qualified) and a friendly match against Croatia ahead of Euro 2024.

Jesus and Ronaldo have shared a strong professional relationship. Prior to his appointment this summer, Jesus coached Ronaldo for a year at Al Nassr and won the Saudi Pro League. The 72-year-old said his decision to coach in Saudi Arabia was due to Ronaldo's invitation and his willingness to coach the striker.

However, Portuguese sports newspaper Record described the situation between the two as an "internal earthquake". On Tuesday, Ronaldo shared an image of himself in national training gear alongside a heart emoji with the Portugal flag.

On Wednesday, sports newspaper A Bola led their Wednesday front page with the headline "situacao de crise" (crisis situation, translated from Portuguese). Portuguese publication B24 additionally said an "emergency" meeting had been scheduled between Ronaldo, Jesus, and FPF president Pedro Proenca.

The aim of this meeting was to clear the air. The FPF have indicated this was not a meeting, but rather a direct conversation between Jesus and Ronaldo, who share a strong mutual respect.

Publicly, Jesus has said Ronaldo "is an important figure for Portugal, playing or not". At the start of this international break, Ronaldo suggested to media that some in Portugal no longer wanted him to be part of the squad. "I feel the Portuguese fans like me, but I do understand that some TV channels want to criticise me," he said. "They've tried to kill me, but only with a shotgun. They are dying for me not to come to the national team anymore."

No men's footballer has made as many international appearances (234) or scored as many goals (146) for their nation as Ronaldo. The striker has featured in 12 major tournaments for his nation, winning the European Championship in 2016 and the Nations League title in 2019 and 2024.

He is unquestionably an icon for Portugal, but the debate on his future and participation with the national team continues to dominate.
